Red Arrows at RAF Valley yesterday.
Not the best weather for photography -very bright sunshine and a heat haze so thick you couldn't sometimes see the planes until they emerged from it right on top of you!
But a fabulous spectacle to witness and my thanks to Gail (Johnson) for giving me the heads up.
These shots all heavily manipulated in software but hope you enjoy them anyway. I now have a stiff neck and aching back from trying to keep up with the angles these guys were appearing from ;0)
Memorial on the south side of the chancel to Sir George Francis Seymour, Admiral of the Fleet (d.1870). The marble effigy is the work of Count Gleichen.
Holy Trinity church in Arrow (near Alcester) is distinguished by an elegant Georgian Gothick tower (built in 1767) but despite the medieval origin of the nave and chancel much of the present appearance of the building is the result of a thorough Victorian makeover in 1865 (when the building was also significantly enlarged by the addition of a new aisle and chapel on the north side).
The interior is thus very much a Victorian one in terms of its overall appearance , along with its furnishings, glass and the fine marble memorial in the chancel. Underneath the chancel is an innaccessible crypt used as a burial vault and an unusual feature here is the aperture at the base of the east wall through which it's dark internal space can be glimpsed, coffins and all!
Arrow church was formerly kept locked without keyholder information and thus frequently frustrated me whenever cycling nearby, and previously the only time I managed to get in was thanks to friends choosing to get married in here! In more recent years the situation relaxed and the church was more regularly open but sadly I failed to make the effort prior to the Covid 19 crisis (and goodness knows what will happen regarding the opening of our churches whenever the current restrictions cease) but as very limited open hours are currently listed on the parish website I timed my trip accordingly.

it looks like an arrow slit from a medieval castle, in fact it's a ventilation slit from a 100 year old barn...

Decided to try something different, saw a whole lot of arrows stuck in the back of the wall of this shop window - coupled with the reflections of the street - it makes an odd mix. Taken in Carmel - no I didn't bump into Clint lol

I've always gotten a kick out of this. That arrow has stood on this building pointing toward the black ball just above and to the right for more than a century. There's a sign beneath it now, but for a long time there was nothing to explain the significance of the arrow, and people would walk around flummoxed. The ball is an artifact of the only piece of the Civil War to touch Elizabethtown.
John Hunt Morgan was a descendent of Kentucky aristocracy, part of a family founded by Kentucky's first millionaire that would eventually include the state's first winner of the Nobel Prize. It looked at first, though, that John Hunt Morgan would be a family black sheep. His father had gone bankrupt in Alabama, leaving John with no money. He had tried attending Lexington's Transylvania University, but had been kicked out after two years for dueling with a fraternity brother. (Note: When the word "duel" appears in accounts of Kentucky history, it doesn't just mean "fight." Guns are involved, and usually somebody dies.) He developed a reputation as a rowdy good-for-nothing, a smear on the Hunt Morgan name. But John eventually put his darker side to good use. He found a military career and became famous during the Mexican War. When the Civil War came, John Hunt Morgan would make himself into a Confederate hero, at least to people who valued bluster above strategy.
As winter approached in 1862, the Confederate General Braxton Bragg grew worried about the threat of a cold-weather campaign through Tennessee from Union General William Rosencranz. Bragg's solution was to send a band led by then Brigadier General John Hunt Morgan to cut off the Union supply lines. On December 22, 1862, John Hunt Morgan set off from Tennessee with 4,000 men to raid towns all along the path of the Louisville & Nashville Railroad. He reached Elizabethtown on December 27, where he encountered a garrison of 650 Union soldiers. Morgan set up artillery on a hill now occupied by a cemetery just south of the town square and began raining fire on the town. One of these cannon balls wound up lodged in this building. Supposedly, this cannon ball has never been disturbed since the moment of impact, though I'm skeptical.
Morgan won the day in Elizabethtown and kept moving north. He burned two vital railroad trestles on Muldraugh's Hill near what is now Fort Knox. But this is where Morgan's lack of discipline got the better of him. Had he been smart, he would have turned around at this point and made a run back for Tennessee. These were, in fact, the orders Bragg had given him, but Morgan let success go to his head. He pushed on and crossed the Ohio into Indiana, then kept raiding into the state of Ohio, where he and his men finally were captured. So while the Confederates benefited from cutting off the railroad through Kentucky, the loss of Morgan's troops proved more costly than the railroad was worth. Morgan and many of his men eventually escaped from a Union prison and made their way back to Tennessee, but Bragg never trusted Morgan again.
