This is just a small part of the falls, (about 25 %) I could not get the full waterfall unfortunately due to bad light and so many tourists bathing there with their swimsuits.

FACTS:

The Rawana Falls (popularly known as Rawana Ella-රාවණා ඇල්ල in Sinhala) is a popular sightseeing attraction in Sri Lanka. It currently ranks as one of the widest falls in the country.

This waterfall measures approximately 25 m (82 ft) in height and cascades from an oval-shaped concave rock outcrop. During the local wet season, the waterfall turns into what is said to resemble an areca flower with withering petals. But this is not the case in the dry season, where the flow of water reduces dramatically.

Betel chewing is a wide-spread tradition across South-East Asia. There are three main ingredients - betel nut (from the areca tree), betel leaf (a pepper vine) and slaked lime. Many countries have developed their own traditions including highly decorative equipment and containers for the leaves, lime and nuts as well as other flavourings such as tobacco, cardamom and cinnamon. This container was probably used for lime and comes from Indonesia.

Paan combines betel leaf with areca nut and is widely consumed throughout India. It is chewed for its stimulant and psychoactive effects. This was the sweet variety often eaten after a meal where calcium carbonate is added as a digestive.

Paan is a preparation combining betel leaf with areca nut and sometimes also with tobacco. It is chewed for its stimulant and psychoactive effects. After chewing it is either spat out or swallowed. Paan has many variations. Slaked lime (chunnam) paste is commonly added to bind the leaves.

An after-food mouth freshener, paan is a common treat at many Indian restaurants & households. The betel leaf used to make paan has not only traditional uses but also health benefits. A typical paan contains coconut powder, gulkand (sweetened rose petals), cloves, saunf (fennel), and red katha paste. Other variants contain tobacco and areca nut. I've tried a bunch with mixed results - some good, some not so much. Pictured here paan from a street vendor in Delhi.
