Letter of Application and Testimonials for Oliver J. Lodge for the Chair of Experimental Physics at University College, Liverpool, 1881
Lodge was Assistant-Professor of physics at University College, London when he applied for the post at the newly established University College at Liverpool. His letter of application gives details of his academic career and his plans to establish a laboratory at Liverpool, to inspire students with a love of the subject, and to develop a programme of evening classes, mentioning his own experience of studying in the evenings and stating that he ‘should be glad to help young men in like condition’
The application includes testimonials from colleagues at University College, London, and the British Association for the Advancement of Science, and from his friend and mentor, Professor G. F. Fitzgerald.
During his time at Liverpool, Lodge lectured on the ether and discovered the electrostatic condensation of fog. He also carried out experiments on the electromagnetic field, producing electromagnetic waves guided along wires using discharge from a Leyden jar in 1888 during work on lightening conductors.
He returned to experiments with radio waves in the 1890s and, with the help of Alexander Muirhead, gave the first public demonstration of radio telegraphy, using the method of signaling in Morse code via long and short pulses. He demonstrated his radio-wave receiver apparatus at the British Association for the Advancement of Science meeting in Liverpool in 1896. Lodge also lectured on X-rays in Liverpool the same year

It didn't do very much. We had Mac Paint and Mac Write were our only applications and the market started to figure this out, by the end of the year people said well maybe the IBM PC isn't as easy to use or is not as attractive as the Macintosh but it actually does something that we want to be able to do - spreadsheets, wordprocessing and database and so we started to see the sales of the Mac tail off towards the end of 1984, and that became a problem the following year.
In memory of Mr John Harrison, late of Red-Lion square, London. Inventor of the time-keeper for ascertaining the longitude at sea. He was born at Foulby in the county of York and was the son of a builder at that place who brought him up to the same profession.
Before he attained the age of 21 he, without any instruction, employed himself in cleaning and repairing of clocks and watches, and made up a few, chiefly of wood.
At the age of 25 he employed his whole time in chronometrical improvements.
He was the inventor of the gridiron pendulum and the method of preventing the effect of heat and cold upon timekeepers by two bars of different metals fixed together.
He introducied the secondary spring to keep them going while winding up and was the inventor of most (or all) of the improvements in clocks & watches during his time.
In the year 1735 his first time keeper was sent to Lisbon and in 1764 his then much improved fourth timekeeper having been sent to Barbados the commissioners of longitude certified that it had determined the longitude within one third of half a degree of a great circle, having erred not more than 40 seconds in time.
After nearly sixty years close application to the above pursuits he departed this life on 24th day of March 1776 aged 83.
The brief was for this model to be only lightly weathered. It is intended that it forms a small cameo scene on a larger Maintenance Depot layout, in which it will be shown having all fluids drained prior to being laid-up in store.
I did start with the usual wash of Precision 'Dirty Black'. However, the factory paintwork didn't seem to like it and it dried very streaky. This was then removed with copious amounts of White Spirit, leaving just a trace of the initial wash. The entire body then had several coats of Testor's 'Dullcote'. The side-streaking was done with powders, as was the work on the roof.
The roof has had three applications of powder with 'Dullcote' in between each layer, apart from the final dusting. A dry-brushing of a mixture of Humbrol 'Gun Metal (Metalcote)' mixed with a small amount of Humbrol 'Leather' was then applied to the roof.
The truck side-frames and fuel tank received a couple of washes of Precision 'Dirty Black' and then a final application of 'Dirty Black' mixed with a bit of precision 'Frame dirt', together with a tad of the Humbrol 'Leather'
By far the most popular feature request I have had for Anxiety is the addition of a Global Hotkey. This was actually planned for the 1.0 release, but due to time constraints and Leopard-related difficulties I decided to postpone its inclusion. I'm pleased to say that this has been added and will be one of the things to look forward to in the next release. Hitting the hotkey results in the list window fading in (or out, depending on the window's visibility), just like the behavior of the menubar item.
In this picture you can see that there's also a preference in the General prefs section to change the global shortcut to something you'd prefer. It uses waffle software's ShortcutRecorder control, which allows you to use function keys, or whatever modifiers you'd like.

Constantly changing wind conditions cause abrupt load changes in wind turbines. Particularly during strong gusts of wind, storms or a wind energy system's start-up phase, towers can tilt so much that the overall system lifetime is affected. An inclination sensor can reduce this stress on the system by reliably measuring the absolute angle of inclination and ensuring that limit values are not exceeded.
