I was observed taking this image - as seen in Hertfordshire!

Another piece of South Bay history to be lost. Western Appliance is closing down after decades in San José. I can still hear the radio jingle in my head, from when I was a kid until now, unchanged over the years.

Hopefully, the sign will be conserved somewhere. It, too, is a south bay landmark.

This was one of my first iPhone manipulations when I got into that sort of thing. Now I mostly do these treatments in Photoshop, but for a while there I had a lot of fun seeing what I could do entirely on my iPhone + apps. I remember my Mom was visiting and I dragged her around San Jose one night shooting signs. (I know how to show people a good time.)

This photo was taken around ten years ago. The sign is iconic in the South Bay, towering above the buildings on West San Carlos. However, Western Appliance closed for good a few months ago and the sign is now dark, its fate uncertain. I printed this image this week because I exchanged it for some professional work. I think the print came out nice.

A couple of days ago, I paid a visit to Western Appliance in San Jose. It is home to one of more spectacular neon signs here in the Bay Area. The sign towers over the retailer's store on West San Carlos near Bascom and is in perfect working order, as you can see from this photo. The sign has been there for nearly 80 years. The family-owned business has been in operation for 146 years. When we remodeled our kitchen, we bought our appliances there.

While I stood in the parking lot of the motorcycle shop across the street, making this photo, one of the employees came out and asked me why there's so much interest in the sign. I was tempted to say, "Well, look at it." :-) But I explained that the store was closing, the sign would probably go dark soon, and its fate remained uncertain. It's almost a given that a multistory structure of some kind will replace the existing store, and the sign will not fit into the plans. I asked the motorcycle shop guy if many people had been taking pictures of the sign and he said, "Pretty much every day."

I observed some interesting animal behavior today. Mrs Jedi had just wiped down some pictures and was walking by Happy with this picture of Shadow. Happy started making his Happy sounds and kissy noises. We put the picture down on the table with Happy. My camera was close by and I managed to capture these images as he gave the picture another big kiss and kept saying "hi". Is it really possible this bird recognized this picture of his departed friend and had something nice to say to him?

By the time I realized that I wanted one of these, they were ridiculously expensive. I kept thinking about just biting the bullet & paying lots of money for one but never did. A couple of weeks ago I was wandering through YJA looking for stuff when I came across this used one in perfect condition for a really cheap price. Even with the deputy service fees it was still way cheaper than what I would have to pay on eBay, so I put in a bid & won. I don't know what I'm going to do with it, but at least I have one now.

Lammas is a dryer kitteh...every time I open the dryer to take out the clean clothes, he runs up to the dryer and hops right in. I think that he likes feeling the heat of it. It is a little blurry because when you see something like this in action, you are almost always scrambling for your camera. Thankfully it turned on quick enough and the settings that it was set to worked out. Haha.

Be prepared for lots of photos of my cats...it has been the only thing I like taking photos of. [spring '11]
