Applebee's (closed) [4,688 square feet]
5400 West Broad Street, Willow Place, Richmond, VA
This location opened in April 1992 and closed on September 9th, 2018. The building was demolished in April 2022 and a Shake Shack was built on site, which opened on June 12th, 2023.
Somehow I ended up not noticing this closed location when I was here a few weeks ago. They must've still had their signage up and the lack of cars in the lot wasn't apparent to me. The restaurant is an outparcel in the shopping center Spirit Halloween is operating out of (which you can see in the background), and while I had planned on photographing that store this empty building was a complete surprise; I'm pretty sure I let out a "WHOA-HO-HO-HOOOOO THAT APPLEBEE'S CLOSED" after driving past it!
It was announced earlier this year that Applebee's was going to close several dozen locations throughout the year, which they are naturally blaming on millennials. This location appears to be one of the victims, as well as another location about 10 miles away. I think Richmond is gonna be okay without these two locations, though- there are still about six-seven locations in operation throughout the city.

An Applebee's that is still attached to a mall!
The North Park Mall in Marion, Indiana opened in 1978. It was rebranded to Five Points Mall in 2009. The mall currently appears to be dying; only one out of four anchor slots will be occupied by summer 2018. Many smaller stores are vacant as well. On the positive side, Planet Fitness is new place in the mall that opened in January 2018 and could be a sign the owners want to convert the mall into a strip shopping center. The outlots also appear to be doing well except for a closed restaurant.

1) JCPenney (open 1978 to 2014) - Currently Vacant
2) Hills (1978 to 1998), Ames (1998 to 2001 or 2002), Steve & Barry's (2004 to 2008), Roses (2011 to current)

With the closure of Applebee's, that leaves the actual building with just two tenants. Target and Macy's. KeyBank and Verizon are still open as an outparcel near Macy's, but everything else is closed.
