A view of a mountain range along the coast of Maria Byrd Land in the Ross Sea, Antarctica, with shelf ice in the foreground.

A view from a recent trip to Antarctica on the sailing Bark Europa. Clouds pouring over the mountains.

Getting ready to go back to the ship after our outing to Deception island. The weather got bad, it started raining and getting cold and everyone hurried back to the Zodiacs.

Mother and child penguins. The young have feathers and they cannot go in the water until they molt and get their real coat. The mothers have to feed them until then.

One one afternoon we saw more whales than on the whole trip. We were on the Zodiacs and there were several whales swimming around. It was wonderful.

Entering the Lemaire channel

We saw only a handful of chinstrap penguins, only for a few moments on one day. Gentoo penguins are the most common. Here is a photo of a rare encounter with a chinstrap penguin, photographed from far away.

Deception island is a volcanic island in Antarctica. The caldera collapsed approximately 10,000 years ago following a major eruption, and today it is black rock and sand with snow. Incredible landscape.

Penguin colony with glacier in the background.

This is the landscape you see every day from the ship. When there is nothing else to do, you can you out to the deck and admire the landscape and keep an eye for wildlife. Not internet, no TV, looking at the landscape is much more relaxing.

BTW, getting the colors right during post-processing was a learning experience for me as the photos come out with a blue cast.

This photo happened in a split second, suddenly this flock of seagulls flew over the icebergs and luckily I had my camera ready and it got the shot in perfect focus.

Another view of the Antarctica landscape, you can see the buildings of one of the research stations.

Seal resting on an iceberg on the incredible landscape.

Lots of ice on the water on this day.

I really like the feather on this one, and always, the impressive feet.

Another view of the same outing without the warm color cast. I like this one better because it looks more like it was, silver water and cold.

A few feathers left until this penguin can go in the water to get his own food. It is amazing how large they get while being fed by their parents.

View from the ship as it cruises along the coast.

More glaciers and their fascinating shapes.

On this day, the water was silver, it was quite a scene with the icebergs floating on it and the mountains in the background.

Landscape you see all the time, icebergs with the snow covered mountains in the background.

Another view of the eerie white and silver landscape

Another close up of a glacier in Antarctica.

We visited the island where the elephant seals live. I was surprised that the penguins don't seem to care about the seals, even though seals eat penguins.

Large iceberg with birds. These are the same birds that were flying in the photo I posted yesterday. I bet we scared them and and they flew away.,

Close-up of a glacier, the colors in the photo are true to what it was in real life.

I went to the Antarctica just after the big economic crash of 2008 / 2009. It was my goal and an end to a long trip through South America, via bus, overland. Due to the lack of tourist, a group of us negotiated a very good price for this trip. When crossing the Drake Passage, you'll encounter some of the roughest seas on the planet. At one point in the trip a big wave hit the boat and the tables and chairs, which were chained to the wooden floor, broke free and flew across the room. All said, well worth the effort.

Hi, I went to Antarctica in March 2023. I have lots of photos to share from this wonderful trip.

Emperor Penguin chicks, Antarctica.

I spent almost the whole November in Antarctica on a mission to shoot the polar landscapes and give presentations to a group of photo hobbyists. This is not a ship dedicated to do photography, so I squeezed my time everywhere, on the deck, on zodiacs, and on kayaks, with my Pentax 645Z, my Nikon D800 and even with my ZTE cellphone. This picture was shot from a kayak trip with my ZTE cellphone, it may be not high-res, but it renders every details of the iceberg very well, another example of low end equipment with excellent result.
