I want adventure in the great wide somewhere。。。

Yay, I'm back from my stay in Manchester Eye Hospital! I know some of my flickr buddies have been curious so, in brief, I needed to have drainage reconstruction surgery (a Trabeculectomy) because I have a bad case of Glaucoma. So, I have a new bionic eye but my requests for X Ray vision fell on deaf ears - which is a shame because I was looking forward to that bit!

This photo was never taken with any thought of me on the operating table but when I was going through photos to post I just thought yep, that sums it up! ! It's actually a stone sculpture that lies face up in shallow water at Trentham Gardens.

Anyway, I now have two weeks of doing nothing, another two weeks of doing very little and then two months of taking it easy so my photography is going to be a little curbed, I have a few photos in the pot to be going on with and then I'll see how it goes. I'll be visiting your pages though - no restrctions with that!

Blythe a Day. May 2026. Day 17.

Carla underwent cleft lip repair by the interplast Cusco, Peru surgical team last year, and was treated this morning for her cleft palate, which was wide open. It is common for patients to have a cleft lip repaired one year and a cleft palate the following year. By seperating the surgeries, Interplast doctors give the child time to heal and avoid keeping the patient under anesthesia for too long.

Dr. Crawford W. Long, renowned physician, pharmacist and inventor of anesthesia - God bless him - was born in Danielsville on Nobember 1, 1815. He graduated from a local academy at age 14 and attended the University of Georgia (where he shared a room with Alexander H. Stephens) as well as colleges in Kentucky and Pennsylvania before returning to Georgia a skilled surgeon.

Laughing gas parties were quite fashionable at the time and C.W. Long observed that while under the influence of inhaled ether, a person could receive falls or blows and have no pain from these accidents let alone remember them. He became convinced that a person would become insensible to pain if sufficiently etherized.

C.W. Long used ether the first time on March 30, 1842 (beating William T. G. Morton by four years) to remove a tumor from the neck of a Mr. James M. Venable. The entry in Long's account book reads as follows: "James Venable / March 30 - Ether and excising tumor...$2.00."

Long subsequently removed a second tumor from Venable and used ether anesthesia in amputations and childbirth. The results of these trials were not published until 1848 and this is probably why Morton was at first believed to be the inventor of anesthesia. Fact of the matter is, both Morton and Long had the bright idea at approximately the same time.

Long moved to Athens in 1951 where he and his brother operated a drugstore on Broad Street across from the college campus.

Dr. Long died in Athens, GA, on June 16, 1878. A small but very informative anesthesia museum is operated in downtown Jefferson (Jackson County).

We had a hedgehog come in at work to have his toenails trimmed... despite our efforts, it was impossible to treat this guy without lightly anesthetizing him, as each time he'd curl into an unbelievably tight ball of bristly spines. So. Cool.

noooot...

Actually Izzy went under and had extensive testing last week. I took this photo when I looked out from the waiting area and saw this dog, and had to rub my eyes...

Izzy's had head imaging, and the veterinarian looked into her nostrils, lungs, esophagi and stomach, took samples for analysis. The results were good in that she had nothing terrible like cancer or tumors or some odd thing stuck somewhere., or bacteria, or parasites... Difficulty is that she has inflammation in all those places, and appears to be environmental immune response. Dr suggested steroids for 3 to 4 weeks. This med can have side effects and can be bad for her heart, which has the mitral valve issue. So, I am trying to consider everything before we decide how to proceed at this point.

Here is a short video I posted this morning, showing Izzy waiting to be picked up for her tests.

For 52 Weeks for Dogs -- 20/52

So, we had a mishap this week. Tuesday night while she was playing with Rosie, Flattery whacked her tail on something in the living room. As it turns out, she broke it, and actually broke one of the bones in half. I'll spare you the gory details, but it was bad and the vet recommended amputation from the break down. So, Flattery has four inches of a tail less now than she did last week and I spent my birthday at home taking care of her while she recovered from the anesthesia. The good news is that she's doing really well and doesn't seem to miss it.

You can read more about Flattery at TalesAndTails.com.

If only I had someone to administer the gas!

Ether for Anesthesia

This is how we are... and without anesthesia.

On October 16, 1846, the first public demonstration of ether anesthesia was performed here, in the Ether Dome. Massachusetts General Hospital - Boston.

That rebreathing bag needs to be inflated.

Rubber swimcap and dental mask, i just need a dentist!

Some random myths and facts about us redheads:

1. Red hair is seen on the heads of only four percent of people. Most of these exist in the U.K., the Republic of Ireland, and Australia. <-- i live in the USA where there are 2-6 percent. It is thought that up to 46 percent of the Irish population carries the recessive redhead gene.

2. There is a belief that redheads are prone to industrial deafness. This actually could be true as the melanocytes are found in the middle ear. <--What'd ya say?

3. A 2002 study found that redhead are harder to sedate than any other people requiring twenty percent more anesthesia. Inadequate doses cause people to wake up during surgery and have increased recall of procedures. <---oh GREAT.

4. In the late 16th century, the fat of a redheaded man was an essential ingredient for poison. <--eek

The Egyptians regarded the color as so unlucky that they had a ceremony in which they burned red-headed maidens alive to wipe out the tint. <--i'm cold natured.

5. An Irish judge in 2001 fined a man for disorderly conduct stating "I am a firm believer that hair coloring has an effect on temper and your coloring suggests you have a temper." <---LOL

6. Redheads have always been thought untrustworthy. <--not true.

7. Adolph Hitler reportedly banned the marriages of two redheads as he feared their children would be "deviant offspring".<--Hitler had no idea.

8. Red hair is the rarest natural hair colour in humans. The pale skin associated with red hair may be of advantage in far-northern climates where sunlight is scarce. Studies by Bodmer and Cavalli-Sforza (1976) hypothesized that lighter skin pigmentation prevents rickets in colder latitudes by encouraging higher levels of Vitamin D production and also allows the individual to retain heat better than someone with darker skin. Also, the vividness and rarity of red hair may lead to its becoming desirable in a partner and therefore it could become more common through sexual selection. <--OOh weee.

9. Bees are thought to sting redheads more than others. <--for sure!

10. In Denmark it is an honor to have a redheaded child. <--and redheaded babies are sooo cute. Ask my mom.

11. In Corsica, if you pass a redhead in the street you are to spit and turn around. <--not going there.

12. In Poland, if you pass three red-heads you'll win the state lottery.<--Cause that's how we roll.

13. In Greek Mythology, redheads turn into Vampires when they die. <--uh oh

14. During the Spanish Inquisition flame colored hair was evidence that its owner had stolen the fire of hell and had to be burned as a witch. <--Again, cold natured.

15. Russian tradition declares that red hair is both a sign that a person holds a fiery temper and craziness. <mm hmm

16. A Russian Proverb warns "There was never a saint with red hair."<--not one?? I can keep trying.

17. Aristotle was known to believe that redheads were emotionally unhousebroken. <--just a little shaky.

18. A French Proverb states that "redheaded women are either violent or false, and usually are both." <--we're not that bad!
