The Empire Builder on Main 1 approaching Red Rock. Although I'd rather see the Charger on the point, it's always nice to have a P-42 along for reliability.

It's not the Olympian but it definitely gave the experience only dreamed could happen.
All that's missing are the electrics. The end of electrification was six days earlier.

Last run for number 18 the North Coast Hiawatha.
The train always was well patronised as evidenced by the length of the train but was a casualty of the drastic cutbacks in 1979.
There would be a week after this of a court ordered mini-Hiawatha that finally ended passenger service to Southern Montana.

Continuing with more E units. When Amtrak started and PC was allowed to discontinue the daytime westbound #53, the only time we could see any passenger action across the Pennsy in daytime was if the Broadway Limited was later enough to show up after sunrise. Such was the case on this sunny day in April 1978 when the Broadway was late enough to get some sun on the curves descending Big Run Hill between Orrville and Wooster near Geyers Chapel Rd.

An unusual move for Amtrak. The Empire Builder was early by about twenty minutes. After work at the station, they pulled forward waiting for time.

Pepsi for breakfast...
I have never been one to go out of my way to photograph Amtrak, normally. However I, like many, have long admired Amtrak's phase III paint scheme used only on their fleet of Dash-8 series GE road locomotives in the 1990s. For Amtrak's 50th anniversary in 2021 we got a new fleet of 'heritage' painted P42s which included AMTK 160 in the Dash-8 phase III scheme, more commonly referred to as the "Pepsi-can' scheme.
While I have seen the locomotive on a few occasions it had always been while at work. On Friday November 7th, while tying up from my usual night job, I noticed AMTK 160 was leading #5, the California Zephyr. The weather was gloomy and of course the train was running right on the advertised, which means darkness through my neck of the woods. Not wanting to pass up another chance at finally getting shots of the Pepsi-can I decided to grab up my camera and drive towards the sunrise.
I decided on a spot just east of Colado, Nevada on the former Southern Pacific mainline. Being the train was smack bang on time meant this location would be pushing the sunrise but I also needed to be able to scurry home and get some rest before work.
Cruddy weather and as I suspected, the train came just as it was getting bright enough for photos. Nothing special but at least I can finally say I have photographed the Pepsi-can heritage locomotive and if nothing else, it makes me hungry (...thirsty???) for another chance at this great looking paint scheme!
