Today's Eastbound California Zephyr, train #6 has a quartet of the new Siemens Charger Amtrak engines.

They will definitely take awhile to get used too!

The AMTK 702 encountered issues near Batavia last night, so CSX sent B791 from Rochester to assist in taking them to Exchange Street, which later Amtrak would set off 716 from 49 to finish it's journey to Niagara Falls.

The Amtrak 50th Anniversary exhibit train at St Paul Union Depot for this weekend's Train Days.

Amtrak 820 and 13 in the nice RWB stripe scheme lead train 40 under the Westinghouse Bridge in East Pittsburg, PA on July 3, 1997. The train has a healthy cut of freight cars behind the engines. At the time Amtrak was going after less than carload business that the Class 1's ignored.

Continuing with more E units. When Amtrak started and PC was allowed to discontinue the daytime westbound #53, the only time we could see any passenger action across the Pennsy in daytime was if the Broadway Limited was later enough to show up after sunrise. Such was the case on this sunny day in April 1978 when the Broadway was late enough to get some sun on the curves descending Big Run Hill between Orrville and Wooster near Geyers Chapel Rd.

BN nearly lost the bridge over the Yellowstone River at Livingston due to flooding. Amtrak's North Coast Hiawatha was rerouted for about a month over the Milwaukee Road between Miles City and Sappington.

 

After a service stop and crew change, #9 leaves town.

 

It's not the Olympian but it definitely gave the experience only dreamed could happen.

 

All that's missing are the electrics. The end of electrification was six days earlier.

Amtrak's southbound Vermonter passes some peak foliage near Macktown Rd. in Windsor, CT. Because of a drought which lasted all summer the foliage was predicted to be a "brownout", but it is nice to see the predictions were wrong.

Not only domes but a dome observation with a drumhead. Such a deal.

Passing possibly the most-photographed signals in New Mexico, Amtrak’s eastbound Southwest Limited storms through Levy, New Mexico.

With a dual wave from the engine crew, a 10-hour late Amtrak 6 takes in some rare daylight miles as it departs Salt Lake City. The downtown SLC skyline, including the Capitol, can be seen in the distance.

Basking in the late afternoon sun, Amtrak's eastbound California Zephyr has drawn quite a colorful consist with 5 paint 'phases' being represented. Number 6 has just departed Rye Patch siding and will split the Humboldt Mountains and the Rye Patch reservoir en-route to the next station stop in Winnemucca.

 

The last time I photographed Amtrak's 40th anniversary rendition of their 'phase II' paint scheme, it was being worn by P42 #66. 130 was painted in phase II colors after 66 had been pulled from service. Phase IV painted 164 is also a 'replacement' heritage locomotive, replacing the 184 that was painted in phase IV colors for the 40th anniversary in 2011.

At Union Depot (1 hour early). Amtrak #160 - 50th Anniversary "Pepsi" locomotive and P42DC #203 wear special paint schemes. The 203 marks Operation Lifesaver's 50th Anniversary..A seriously gloomy and rainy day, but had to shoot it.

Amtrak 50th anniversary P42 108 leads a very late Lake Shore Limited West through Ogden Dunes, IN.

Amidst the pine covered granite of the Sierra, Amtrak's eastbound California Zephyr makes its way up the mountain at MP 178, just below Butte Cañon and Shed 10.

Waves from the mighty Pacific lap the sun drenched shore of California's Gaviota State Beach as the Coast Starlight soars overhead. Private rail car 'Cyrus K Holliday' brings up the markers as #14 heads for points north.

A pair of Mallards observe southbound Northeast Regional 147 crossing the Farmington River at Windsor, CT.

Amtrak's southbound P089, the "Silver Palm," crosses the Rappahannock River on the CSX RF&P Subdivision at Fredericksburg, VA on Jan. 29, 2000 with P42's No's. 48 and 97.

Amtrak’s eastbound Pennsylvanian rolls under the PRR CPL’s at Banks.

Amtrak's Veteran painted engine leads an hour and half late Eastbound #6, the California Zephyr through Palisade, CO.

Amtrak 238 passes under an unusual style NYC cantilever at CP 125 on the Hudson Line.

Running many hours late, Amtrak's eastbound California Zephyr sails downgrade between Low and Marblehead, Utah on the old WP mainline. Amtrak's 50th anniversary edition of the 'pointless arrow' leads the charge through a snowy scene.

Amtrak #5, the westbound California Zephyr travels through a desert-style landscape and will soon pass the almost ghost-town of Thompson Springs. P42 #182 and #59 lead the train.

The Empire Builder is only 1.4 miles into its cross-country journey to the PNW coast. The first part is exiting the labyrinth of trackage in Chicago downtown area.

Amtrak 353 breezes by at 78 mph.

Amtrak P42 100 leads southbound Northeast Regional train 157 past Defco Park in North Haven, CT.

Amtrak's WB Southwest Chief nears Glorieta as it passes the searchlights that guard the east end of Blanchard siding on the former ATSF. In the background is Starvation Peak, a famous landmark of the Santa Fe Trail.

#10 has arrived at Sappington and is now pulling into the siding. It will back through the switch and over the interchange to the Milwaukee Road's main line. The Milwaukee's signals approaching the grade level crossing and call box can be seen through the poles .

Eastbound Amtrak 350 approaches Ann Arbor.

Amtrak Charger 4626 with westbound train 311 @ Glendale, Mo. (216667)* Trains 311 and 316 will cease running after Jan. 2nd 2022 as the Missouri Legislature failed to provide funding.

Amtrak P051 crosses the Wabash River north of Lafayette, IN the morning of Labor Day 2019.
