Where the U.S.50 meets the American River.

On the way up to Lake Tahoe.

I was enticed by the beautiful clouds building at sunset, but I actually like how the foreground turned out more than the clouds.

A quiet morning along the American River just outside of Auburn. The Mountain Quarry Railroad Bridge crosses the river at this location. Sometimes referred to as "the No Hands Bridge," the bridge is a centerpiece on the Pioneer Express Trail and beloved for its graceful appearance within this hilly rugged environment. The bridge has been repurposed as a walking bridge.

Coloma Bridge spans the south fork of the American River at Coloma. This one-lane bridge was constructed in 1915, obviously a time when folks had more patience than they do today, as you have to wait your turn to enter the bridge if traffic is coming in the opposite direction. The neighborly thing to do is wait patiently, then wave at the other vehicle as it passes. Sometimes the locals stop, roll down their windows, and chat a spell before moving on. It's nice to not be in a hurry.

In the meantime, autumn is looking pretty grand in the background.

Along the U.S. 50 heading up to Lake Tahoe.

The historic Coloma Bridge spans the American River at Coloma. The Sierra Nevada Foothills are rich in one lane bridges at the various river crossings. This is one on my favorites. The bridge was constructed in 1916 and except for a few improvements it is the same now as it was back then--a lazy rural crossing where every once in awhile you have to bide your time while a vehicle crosses before you in the opposite direction.

A good place to linger longer...

I am fortunate to live in an area with several rivers. This is the South Fork of the American River upstream from Folsom Lake. Somehow, these kinds of river scenes remind me of a place we used to go in the 60's called Lum's on Florin Road in Sacramento. It had this dark decor and the restaurant was rather quiet and peaceful. It had these Hamm's Scene-O-Rama signs on the wall and I just loved to watch the water sparkle in them. There actually is a Lum's still open in Nebraska. Road trip anyone? ;-)

It's rained a lot since I took this, so I would love to go back and see what it looks like now...

Aboutme

Another one from the American, January 2007.

On Thursday morning I decided to make a run over to Coloma along the South Fork of the American River to see how autumn was coming along. This is the spot where gold was first discovered at Sutter's Mill in 1848. The discovery set off one of the most frenzied migrations of people in American history, with over 300,000 folks pouring into the area in hopes of becoming rich beyond their wildest dreams. The actual location is about 100 yards down river from where I snapped this photo.

That was all well and good, but as I stood and looked at this autumn landscape, it occurred to me where the real gold in California really is.

Autumn is in full display near the Coloma Bridge about 100 yards upstream from where James Marshall discovered gold in 1848, setting off one of the greatest human migrations in American history.

The drawback of the short days of late November are more than made up by the sweeter, softer light of the season. A little slice of home here.

This was taken the next day after the first post of the same place on my way home going over Chinook pass. American River with Fifes Peak in the background. Wenatchee National Forest, Washington State

A family of river otters cavorting along the banks of the American River after devouring an amazing number of fish and crayfish.

No se nota porque se ve muy poco del otro río pero en ese punto se juntan dos de los ramales del río Americano. En el mapa se puede observar mejor donde confluyen ambos ríos.
