Its hard to believe that five years have passed since I was there looking at this view, time sure flies by, i've been lucky enough to have had the opportunity to visit this beautiful country four times over the years.
This was taken on the descent from Mera Peak high camp 5800m looking north towards the pyramid shaped summit of Mt Everest* 8848m just left of centre with Lhotse 8414m and Lhotse Shar 8393m to the right. Left of Everest is the ridge of Nuptse 7861m, on the extreme left is the summit of Malangphulang 6573m with Ama Dablam 6856m behind to its right. One of the prominent peaks on the right is the romantically named Peak 41 6648m, not sure which, the other does not appear to be named. Bottom right is the Mera La (pass).

Recently I was asked about the Cho La pass in Himalayas, so I used this opportunity to revisit photos I took on this day. And I think it was the best view we got this day - the valley we were sleeping in with Ama Dablam in the background.
I posted that one a while back. This one was taken during an acclimatization walk. Almost from the same location. Just 600m higher. It was worth a climb. I think!
PS. H1 was busy. Time to start holidays! Coming soon!!! :-)

And that's the promised Mt Everest photo. The main 'block' of mountains consists of:
* The long ridge are Nuptse and its peaks. The highest is just below 8,000m;
* Then there is Mt Everest;
* And then there are three Lhotse peaks. Currently officially there are 14 peaks over 8,000m. In 2012 Nepal attempted to add 8 more peaks to this list and Lhotse Shar (8,383m) was on the list. The application failed, so it is still 'just' a subsidiary mountain of Lhotse. And actually according to wikipedia: It has the highest fatality rate of all the eight-thousanders - for every 2 people who summit the mountain, one person dies attempting to. Scary!

For some reason, most trekkers to Everest Base Camp stay on the trail and rarely venture into the surrounding wilderness. I decided to do some exploring and found this spectacular alpine lake with a reflection of Ama Dablam. Clouds obscured the view in the afternoon but parted just after sunset to reveal some of the most beautiful twilight colors I've ever witnessed. The cloud layer that had surrounded me all afternoon can be seen receding back down the valley. It's still catching some light from below.
A view of Ama Dablam from the Tengboche monastery during my EBC trek. This peak was in my opinion the most beautiful and interesting of the entire trek. I envy the people who get the opportunity and are capable of climbing such an amazing mountain.

10 years to the day,
A photo of great importance to me. Hanging on the living room wall as a constant reminder of how lucky I was to escape the mountain with my life.
