he's the one I worry about most. His asthma has landed us in the nighttime peds office for the last 3 years in September. Last year was the worst. He couldn't even walk or talk. Now he's off milk, on allergy meds and fish oil. The allergist wanted him on 4 meds/day plus allergy shots. Thank God for our ped who is helping us get a grasp on this holistically and nutritionally, w/o the meds w/ awful side effects. Dealing with all that has made him a worrier, which makes me worry.
Knock on wood, he seems to be better this year. I hope it continues.
I was tagged by photos and tea (photos and tea's Photostream) last week and somehow missed it. So here are 10 things about me that you may not know:
1. This picture is of a shop window that is called the Chocolate Lab--that isn't what you don't know about me. Here it is: I don't like chocolate. I will eat it if I have to, but rarely ever get hungry for it and certainly don't crave it.
2. If you give me gummy candy, I will be your friend forever.
3. I am an only child, but I am not spoiled and love to share.
4. I always thought that I would marry a man who is taller and older than me, but my wonderful Mister is younger and shorter.
5. I have a short attention span....or maybe a fear of being really good at something....or maybe I am just lazy. I can play just about all woodwind instruments and own 6 different ones, but am not really good at any of them. As soon as I start getting good at one, I stop practicing or start learning a new one.
6. I would much rather sit around and read all day than ever do any kind of exercise.
7. My grandparents live in a place called Bobtown. Nobody knows who Bob was.
8. I am allergic to raw carrots. I used to eat them until my fingers turned orange when I was a kid and when I got to college, developed an allergy to them....my throat gets itchy, my gums get swollen and red....so I just don't eat them anymore, but miss them terribly. The allergist told me to just try eating one every now and then, but I am scared to.
9. My parents lived in Brazil for 2 years--it is an amazing country.
10. I still don't know what I want to be when I grow up.

Ok so the weather is not as it should be here this time of year. Spring is here though and that means major allergies for Connor. Poor dude has been hacking up a lung lately. Took him to the allergist yesterday and they had to give him an emergency treatment in the office because he was so bad....
Day #2 of probably staying home from school. Extra neb treatments and prednisone. Then some weirdo inhaler thing that is like a powder that you inhale. Seriously, that can't be real good.....
Anyway - where is the warmer weather? We need to break through this pollen crap!

I immediately went for a massage after lugging the spool to my car.

Lately I have been seeing a lot of these guys.
Turns out that may be a good thing for me. Three weeks ago my allergist diagnosed me with a sun allergy - or polymorphous light eruption. To avoid symptoms I am supposed to either stay out of the sun as much as possible or use a sun screen with a factor of 50+. Since my symptoms haven't really improved in the last few weeks despite me hardly spending any time outside (it was raining anyway) we'll see how that goes. Right now I am doing what I usually do - pretend it's nothing and hope for the best.
Some have been asking, and hear's the answer. I've been doing very little photography this spring and summer after experiencing chronic recurring conjunctivitis since March. Latest episode lasting from June 1st thru July 8th. Many Drs.' visits with many "try this" treatment suggestions to no avail. I had asked that a sample for the lab be taken at each of my appts. to help with diagnosis - with each new appt. and Dr. - Primary Dr., Allergist, and Ophthalmologists. Apparently, that's not the "protocol" these days which probably means insurance doesn't pay for it. But it does mean more expense and aggravation for patients. It was also strange to learn that my regular Ophthalmologist doesn't see patients for conjunctivitis, and I had to find another one that would. Thankful to have had a WHOLE week - free from symptoms. I developed asthma later in life. I thought the allergist pompous when I asked if there was an easier treatment plan, and the reply was that I would not choose it. He was correct; I would not give up my four cats*. Sadly, all have passed away. Storage is my excuse for keeping the cheap carrier. Truth is, I dream about adopting a cat.
*Three ended up with me after their owner fell on hard times.

Valerie Harper was an American Emmy Award actress best known for her television role as the feisty Rhoda Morgenstern and best friend of Mary Richards on “The Mary Tyler Moore Show.” Who didn’t love Rhoda? In 2001 I got a phone call from my good friend, writer Catherine Whitney. She was working on a new project, co-writing a book with Harper. It needed illustrations and she wanted to know if I was interested. The book was called, “Today I Am a Ma’am: And Other Musing on Life, Beauty, and Growing Older.” I remember my first response was, “I don’t know if I am woman enough to do the drawings.” So I offered to do one illustration and see if Valerie liked it and we’d go from there. She liked what I did! The project turned into one of the best jobs I ever had. How could it not? I was working for Rhoda! The book was charming and funny and each illustration just worked. As an illustrator you can’t ask for more. Catherine told me, at one point during the job, that Valerie was loving what I was doing. One evening my wife, Brenda, and I came home and there was a message on the answering machine. It was Valerie!! I still get caught up in celebrity. Valerie Harper is leaving a message on our machine!?! Eventually we did speak and it was like I was talking to an old friend. The climax came soon after the project was over. We were in New York City and Catherine got us tickets for Valerie’s show on Broadway, “The Tale of the Allergist’s Wife.” After the show we met Valerie in her dressing room. She was as wonderful as I expected she’d be. At one point she got a phone call from her husband, Tony. The first thing she said to him was, “Tony, you’ll never guess who is sitting here in my dressing room!” I just looked around and said, “Who? Who?” We left the theatre with Valerie. I’ve been on the side of autograph seekers waiting for the celebrity to exit. I had never been on the side of the celebrity exiting the theatre. That was pretty cool. Valerie was a joy. I was a big fan of hers since the first time I met her on “The Mary Tyler Moore Show.” Years later, working for her and meeting her. Excellent!
so less than a week after her appointment with the pediatric dermatologist / allergist, clover is eczema free. she no longer claws at herself and her skin is a smooth as, well, as smooth as a baby.
I believe this is a 1980 Tercel Liftback. These are very rare here in New England; most have succumbed to rust. This one is a little rusty, but it's soldiering on. The interior was well-used too. I spotted this at my allergist's office.

I am supposed to go to Birmingham on Wednesday for a week to see my sister and her family, and my 91 year old mom who is in a nursing home and suffers from dementia. Won't exactly be on the road, but more like on the airplane to Chicago, and then Birmingham. The problem is that I developed this horrible rash with blisters on it last Tuesday, and it's on my left side bum area, which makes it hard to sit. I went to the dermatologist on Friday, and found out it is shingles, which apparently lays dormant in your system once you've had chicken pox. The derm said that stress can weaken your immune system and once that happens, latent things can step forward. Along with the blisters are my swollen lymph nodes which feel like a narble beneath the skin and throb and hurt.
Okay, this is going to be another illness paragraph, and I am writing it to see if anyone understands what may be going on with me because perhaps you have experienced it yourself. For the last six months, my body has been super stressed out as I have been experiencing extreme body heat, and I'm thinking this is what may have brought on the shingles. It's mostly in my upper body, and I get so hot that I don't even take hot baths or showers anymore because it makes me feel even hotter and really sick. I have stopped eating meat because it makes me feel too hot, and I have been consulting a Chinese website that lists warm, cooling and neutral foods, and I am eating a lot of cooling foods like avocados and cucumbers and sesame oil. (Who knew sesame oil was cooling??) If I eat a warming food, I really feel uncomfortable, like there are burners beneath my skin and they are on medium heat. Ok, so this is not menopause because I've been there and done that, and this is more intense that that anyway...
I have been to an allergist, a naturopath, an endocrinologist, my primary care physician, a dermatologist, and no one can figure out what's causing this. Oh, and acupuncture and even it doesn't help. So I guess I am writing this in the hopes that maybe one of you, perhaps, can shed some light on this, albeit cooling light!

I'm knitting my first pair of socks (also my first time knitting with double-pointed needles) with KnitPicks Felici Self-striping yarn. I got a good deal on 3 balls of it from someone in a craft forum, so I think I am going to make knee-high socks. A few veteran knitters have yelled at me about picking a complicated pattern as my first pair of socks...Mel says I should have done a basic pattern (with needles bigger than the insanely small size 1 I'm using), and if I had, I'd be done with both socks by now. Instead, I have this much done of ONE sock.
To be honest, this pattern didn't seem that complicated, but because it's not just knitting or ribbing, it is taking longer, and I'm not really slaving away at it; I only work on it waiting at the allergist or when I sit and knit with Mel. I like it so far, and can only hope I continue to feel this way about it so that I will have the will-power to make a second one. :)
