Sunset on the statue of Al-Khwārizmī in his birth town of Khiva, Uzbekistan

Muḥammad ibn Mūsā al-Khwārizmī, formerly Latinized as Algoritmi, was a Persian mathematician, astronomer, and geographer during the Abbasid Caliphate, a scholar in the House of Wisdom in Baghdad.

Some words reflect the importance of al-Khwārizmī's contributions to mathematics : algebra is derived from al-jabr and algorism and algorithm stem from Algoritmi, the Latin form of his name.

Algebraic Chess Notation is the current and best form to learn of which Figurine Notation is a derivative swapping the piece names for figures to be langauge neutral. Chess Notation describes each move with the name of the pieces and the square to which it is moved. Each piece has its own letter abbreviation, except the pawn. If no piece is named, it’s assumed to a pawn move, and Knight is “N” not “K”, which is King.

A + K = ♥, then is

A 2-Xing (two-timing) C + K?

(These algebraic declarations of love, in a small wooded piece of land near the local high school, appear to be the handiwork of the same love-stricken but fickle Romeo.)

Algebra and new math can be very confusing, even for my nephew (that's right, I said "nephew").

"There is no collective thought. On the other hand our science is

collective like our techniques. Specialization. We inherit not only results but methods which we do not understand. For the matter of that the two are inseparable, for the results of algebra provide methods for other sciences."

HMMM!

Took a bit of finagling, but I like a bit of finagling, figuring out how to get the angle right so her face was in the right part of the frame, working against the pool, where the edges were curved, having Katie straddle me (give us a bit o' shade) while I lay on the diving board to get myself over Meghan, ignoring the fact that Katie was just in the pool herself, so pool water was dripping all over my back (oh, not such a hardship, hot day, water cooling me down, I've had it much worse), keeping my camera dry, getting the camera over Meghan, not dropping my camera in the water.

Photographic algebra, and you know what? I like it. I like having to work against some variables, work against them knowing that if I just work it a bit, jiggle the key a bit, blow on the Nintendo cartridge, know that if I give it a bit of effort, I can pull it off.

And even when you don't, it's worth it to hang out with good people and have a bit of a goof at the pool.

I use a number of mathematical equations in my crochet projects since I am generally using yarn from my stash and not full skeins.

I have a list of the number of total stitches per round as well as the cumulative total. After a few rounds I weigh the piece in grams and divide by the number of total stitches. This gives my an approx weight per stitch. Using that figure, I can determine how many stitches I can get from the yarn available. That helps me decide on color placement. Next, I measure the increase in size per round to determine how many rounds it will take for the desired size. When finished, I make a note of the total weight in grams. All this solving for X takes time but a lot less frustrating than ripping a project apart because there isn't enough yarn.

While it's not an eXact science, it gives me a pretty good estimate.

This blanket is now done and I can "X" it off the list.

Yes, I do like math and nice to be able to put those algebra skills to good use

“The Snowflake” is finally complete. 2500 hours across 5 years, this poster print represents that largest project I have ever undertaken. Depicted in this image is over 400 unique snowflakes, all accurately measured and scaled to that they are all in relative size to one another. The poster print is currently available for pre-order shipping in January, but I have “artist’s proofs” available right now that I’ll be shipping as the orders are placed. Take a look! skycrystals.ca/poster/

On average, 40 separate images are combined for each snowflake photograph. This is required to get the crystal in focus from tip to tip with a process called focus-stacking. Due to the nature of the subject and the hand-held approach to photographing each snowflake, 4-5 hours are spent on each image in post-processing.

Measuring snowflakes is a time-consuming task, and the right equipment is needed to get accurate results. Thankfully, a hidden piece of metadata recorded by the Canon MP-E 65mm F/2.8 1-5x Macro lens makes this possible: the magnification factor. Combined with the physical size of the sensor and the total number of pixels across the sensor, an algebraic equation allows us to calculate the number of pixels per millimeter and measure the crystals.

The process of measuring snowflakes is made more difficult by the removal of certain metadata when editing. The “magnification factor” value is stored in a special area of image metadata called “makernotes”, and can be extracted by tools such as exiftool. This special section of metadata is removed from the file when processed through any Adobe software (and I’m sure others), requiring me to revisit the original raw files for each snowflake to obtain the proper value.

The largest snowflakes measure just over 11mm in diameter, and the smallest are 0.2mm across. Different storms create different kinds of crystals, some symmetrical but always unique. No two snowflakes falling from the sky will ever be identical. This poster shows the beauty in their variety.

This print not only shows the beauty of winter, but it’s an eye-opening experience when you dive into the details. The working file on my computer is 12 gigapixels in size, so I could theoretically make 60” x 90” print at 480dpi if I wanted, losing no detail in the process. When working on the file, my computer uses over 100GB of RAM, so creating something like this required impressive technology to boot.

Five years of photographing snowflakes, all with the same technique. I knew there was a reason why, and here it is: “The Snowflake”. Please let me know your thoughts!

Algebraic chess notation is the most common way to write chess moves. It uses uppercase letters to identify the pieces: K for king, Q for queen, B for bishop, N for knight, and R for rook. It also uses a grid of lowercase letters (a-h) and numbers (1-8) to name every square. The piece and were the piece is moved is written. Also castling king-side is written as O-O and castling queen-side is written as O-O-O.

My first adventuretime fanart!

I decided to enter the threadless x adventuretime competition, but i had no idea what to draw. So i started doodling Finns. It started with 1. and it grew into a gaggle. A gaggle of Finn doodles. 90 in total! Rhombus!

The shirt is currently up for voting! yay!

This Buck is coming into his own, I named him Algebra yesterday (11/9/23). I did so because his rack is very symmetrical and I didn't like the way Geometry sounded. But looking up the etymology of Algebra, I think it's a perfect fit: Algebra: from the Arabic - ج ب ر - Al-Jabr: Bonesetting - "Reunion of Broken Parts," from the title of the early 9th century book ʿIlm al-jabr wa l-muqābala - "The Science of Restoring and Balancing," by the Persian mathematician and astronomer al-Khwarizmi. In his work, the term al-jabr referred to the operation of moving a term from one side of an equation to the other, المقابلة al-muqābala "balancing" referred to adding equal terms to both sides.

To the best of my recollection, my favorite Fort Snelling named bucks in order are:

1) Pieball - (Deceased)

2) Crybaby

3) Notch (Deceased)

4) Odin (Deceased)

Algebra's like sheet music, the important thing isn't can you read music, it's can you hear it. Can you hear the music, Alex?

haha. cute? (:

the textbook underneath doesnt even match! its geometry, and thats algrebra. hehehe. well, you use algebra somewhat in geometry, yeah?

studying is making my brain melllllt. D:

but whatever. i enjoy the late night alone time. and i took a 2hr nap earlier, so i'm all good.

As phoebird requested, here are details of the triptich. A fine idea for flickr because one of the problems here is getting a sense for larger pieces that I do. This triptich will be about 18" x 48" on the wall, if not a little lerger. But I kind of like them as iindividiual statements too.

Got bored in algebra and started drawing on my hand.

Tomorrow is my first of three days in AC.

I'm kinda not feeling up to it, 'cause I don't wanna miss biology, because we're watching Outbreak, and it's actually a pretty good movie. And then like I won't be able to do anyyyyything. =/

I'm so upset! I hope I'm not failing anything, though.
