At low tide, and after several sunny days, the colorful images you can find at the rock formations close to the sea are quite amazing!

Blue-green algae is a term used to describe a group of bacteria called cyanobacteria. They are not actually algae, the organisms got this name because they often give the appearance of algae when they clump together in bodies of water. They cannot be seen with the naked eye until they do clump together, giving them the appearance of pea soup. Blooms of the organisms often build up around the edges of ponds, lakes and reservoirs, usually when it’s very warm and with no wind.

There are warning notices by the reservoir wall of its presence in this body of water, we’ve seen it before on occasions but never like this, it was almost covering the entire surface. It’s not often we have a day with no wind at all, the only movement on the water today were the ripples created by a few ducks swimming around.

The bacteria is harmful to pets and humans, but despite the very high profile notices telling people to keep out of the water, we’ve seen people swimming in here all through the summer.

Thank you for your visit and your comments, they are greatly appreciated.

I went to Landmannalaugar, a great place located in the Icelandic interior highlands a few days ago.

There are some hot springs and in some of them, we can find large strings of algae.

These are actually blue-green bacteria, the ones responsible for most fresh-water "algal" blooms. Here they have bloomed because of excessive use of fertilizer in the agricultural fields around the stock tank.

Algae are a diverse group of organisms that occur in various shapes and sizes and have different ecological roles. Thousands of species of algae occur world-wide in both fresh and marine waters. Many species of freshwater algae float in the water, but others are attached to submerged rocks or aquatic plants. Most freshwater species are inconspicuous and do not create problems for humans. There are only a dozen or so, so-called "bad actors" that are considered problem-causing algae.

Algae typically serve as an important and welcome part of a lake or pond ecosystem. They form the base of the food chain and are a vital component of lakes. Algae provide a source of food, energy, and shelter for zooplankton (tiny water animals), fish, and other lake organisms. They can play a crucial role in the ability of a ecosystem to absorb nutrients and heavy metals.

I guess this one's name could have been Greenland if the name wasn't already taken by a much much bigger island.

i do not know what kind of red algae it is.....

This past June I had the opportunity to take a few rides along the Mississippi River. These particular photo images were taken out by Mud Lake and then a few were taken by Lock and Dam 11 in Dubuque, Iowa. I found the river to be a beautiful blue, along with the sky, the algae a nice contrasting green along with the blades of grass, weeds, and reeds that were popping up and floating along the top of the river. Lily pads and leaves were also in the mix floating along the river bank. Nature at its finest. Now algae may not be the most welcome thing in a pond or lake, especially if you have dogs that like swimming. However I did find the pattern on this particular pond very interesting.
