This building began as the mausoleum of emperor Hadrian. He began work here already in 125 A.D., and it was finished by his successor in 139, a year after the death of Hadrian. It was not just for Hadrian himself, but also his family, the buried here included his wife Sabina, Antoninus Pius and his wife Faustina Maior, Lucius Aelius Caesar, Commodus, Marcus Aurelius, Septimius Severus and his wife Julia Domna, Geta and Caracalla. Caracalla's burial in 217 A.D. is the last recorded one in the mausoleum.
In 401 it was turned into a fortress and got built into the Aurelian wall. When Alaric and the Visigoths sacked Rome in 410 A.D. the place was looted and the urns taken away and the ashes scattered. And in 590 an angel is supposed to have appeared on the roof - where the bronze statue now can be found - given the place its current name.
The popes rebuilt the mausoleum/fortress several times, continuing to use it as a fortress, connected to St Peter through a covered fortified corridor and a lot of structural revisions were made in the 16th century making it a Roman/Renaissance crossover.

Une des légendes sur l’origine des fleurs de lys de France rapportée par Louis Girard , rappelle que la fleur de lys est un iris stylisé dont Clovis à fait sa fleur favorite. Lors de la bataille de Vouillé en 507, les armées de Clovis sont repoussées dans les marécages de la Vienne par les Wisigoths d’Alaric II. Une biche au son de l’armée traverse alors la Vienne en crue au niveau d’un gué environné de grands iris dont les rhizomes contribuent à la stabilisation des berges et vasières des cours d’eau, indiquant ainsi que ce paysage au sol stable pouvait être franchi par les armées franques qui vont pouvoir battre les Wisigoths. Cette fleur, symbole de la victoire de Clovis, est dès lors adoptée par les rois des Francs.

This is Gytheio. It is located in the northeastern corner of Mani and lies on the northwestern end of the Laconian Gulf. Gytheio was built on a hill called Koumaros or Laryssio in one of the most fertile areas in Mani, near the mouth of the Gythium River, which is usually dry and has been nicknamed Xerias "dry river"; today, most of the Xerias is covered by Ermou Avenue. Further northeast is the delta of the Evrotas River. Offshore are several small islands; the most important of these islands is Cranae, which is connected to the mainland by a causeway. Gytheio is only 40 km (25 mi) southeast of Sparti.
The reputed founders of ancient Gythium were Heracles and Apollo, who frequently appear on its coins or in other legends, and Castor and Pollux, the former of these names may point to the influence of Phoenician traders from Tyre, who, we know, visited the Laconian shores at a very early period.
In 455 BC, during the First Peloponnesian War, it was burned by the Athenian admiral Tolmides who besieged the city with 50 ships and 4,000 hoplites. It was rebuilt and was most probably, the building ground for the Spartan fleet in the Peloponnesian War.
In 370 BC, the Thebans under the command of Epaminondas besieged the city successfully for three days after ravaging Laconia. However it was recaptured by the Spartans three days later.
In 219 BC, Philip V of Macedon tried to capture the city but without success. Under Nabis, Gythium became a major naval arsenal and port. During the Roman-Spartan War, Gythium was captured after a lengthy siege. After the war finished, Gythium was made part of the Union of Free Laconians under Achean protection. Nabis recaptured Gythium three years and the Spartan fleet defeated the Achean fleet outside of Gythium. Gythium was liberated by a Roman fleet under the command of Aulus Atilius Serranus. Subsequently, Gythium formed the most important of the Union of Free Laconians, a group of twenty-four, later eighteen, communities leagued together to maintain their autonomy against Sparta and declared free by Caesar Augustus. In Roman times Gythium remained a major port and it prospered as a member of the Union. Some time in the 4th century AD, Gythium was destroyed. What happened to Gythium is not recorded but it is thought to have been either sacked by Alaric and Visigoths, pillaged by the Slavs or destroyed by the massive earthquake that struck the area in 375 AD. After the earthquake Gythium was abandoned. It remained a small village throughout the Byzantine and Ottoman times. Its importance grew when Tzannetos Grigorakis built his tower at Cranae and more people came and settled at Gytheio. But during the Greek War of Independence, refugees flooded into Mani and made Gytheio a major town.
The modern Gytheio opened a port in the 1960s. Ferries sail from Gytheio to Kythira almost daily and also to Crete twice a week. Gytheio is the largest and most important town in Mani and it is also the seat of the municipality of East Mani.Most of the ruins of ancient Gythium are now submerged in the Laconian Gulf. Some walls' remains can be seen today on the sandy beach of Valtaki and in the shallow waters, where the well known Dimitrios shipwreck lies stranded (see previous pictures of the shipwreck, Lost Horizon and Broken Promises).

The popes rebuilt the mausoleum/fortress several times, continuing to use it as a fortress, connected to St Peter through a covered fortified corridor and a lot of structural revisions were made in the 16th century making it a Roman/Renaissance crossover.
The angel is standing on the bridge leading up to Castel Sant'Angelo. This was originally called Pons Aelius (Aelian Bridge) and built in 134 A.D. by emperor Hadrian to connect the city and his mausoleum, supposedly by the architect Demetrian. It was later also referred to as pons Sancti Petri (the bridge of St Peter) because pilgrims used it to get to the St Peter's basilica. And in the early 7th century it was given the official name of Sant'Angelo, to match the name-change of the mausoleum to Castel Sant'Angelo.
In the 15th century the bridge was used to display the bodies of executed criminals.
The angels now adorning the bridge were commissioned in 1669 by pope Clement IX and made by students of Bernini under his directions. This one, angel holding a sponge, was made by Antonio Giorgetti.

Hoy, con un día espléndido, hemos hecho una rutita de montaña. Desde Navarredonda de la Rinconada a la Cueva de la Mora. La cueva se encuentra ubicada en la ladera sur del pico que lleva su nombre, en un lugar de difícil acceso y enigmático por el sustrato legendario que la acompaña. La leyenda relaciona este lugar como el refugio del último rey godo Don Rodrigo y de su bella amante la reina Quilama, que huyeron por este lugar que comunica con el pico del Castillo Viejo de Valero. También cuenta la leyenda que en su interior en intrincados laberintos y pasadizos se encuentra escondido el tesoro del rey godo Alarico.

From the glorious past, Tursi was originally called Pandosia, founded by the Enotri before 1000 BC.
From the 8th century BC, in fact, on the Ionian coast the Greeks founded the cities of Siris, Heraclea - today Policoro -, Metaponto and Pandosia, the latter destroyed between 81 BC. and 72 a.C. by the Roman general Lucio Cornelio Silla. From the ruins of Pandosia, just before the Christian era, Anglona was born, from which it takes its name the precious Sanctuary that rises to then kilometers from Tursi.
In 410 Anglona underwent the destruction by the Visigoths of Alaric I who, to control the surrounding territory, built a castle on a hill halfway between the Agri and Sinni rivers, where the surviving inhabitants of Anglona sheltered. Thus rises the Rabatana, the first populated village of Tursi, whose name, however, is due to the Saracens, who in the ninth century conquered a large part of the metapontine plain, up to the Rabatana in fact. The traces of Arab domination are still evident in buildings, traditions and culture. In 890 it was the turn of the Byzantines who called the entire Tursikon center, in honor of the founder Turcico. Then Normanni, Svevi and Angioini succeeded, contributing to the growth of the city.
From the definitive destruction of Anglona, only the sanctuary is saved and in 1400 the citizens took refuge in Tursi, with the subsequent merger of the two dioceses. It is Andrea Doria (1552) to receive from Carlo V the Duchy of Tursi, who died in 1769 with the consequent acquisition of land by the families Donnaperna, Picolla, Panevino, Camerino, Brancalasso.

Ataulf, king of the Goths.
Vitoria, Pays Basque, Spain. 2018.
One of the almost hundred statues that were ordered for the decoration of the Palacio Real of Madrid, executed between 1750 and 1753. This one and five more were moved to Vitoria in 1821.
Ataulf was king of the Visigoths from 410 to 415, sucessor of Alaric. During his reign, he transformed the Visigothic state from a tribal kingdom to a major political power of Late Antiquity. He married Gala Placidia, sister of roman emperor Honorio, and daugther of Theodosius the Great. He was killed in Barcelona.

Una las casi cien estatuas elaboradas para el Palacio Real de Madrid. entre 1750 y 1753. Esta y otras cinco se enviaron a Vitoria en 1821, y se instalaron en el parque de la Florida.
Ataúlfo fué rey de los visigodos de 410 a 415. Sucesor de Alarico. Se casó con la afamada Gala Placidia, hermana del emperador romano, que los suyos secuestraron en el saqueo de Roma. Fué asesinado en Barcelona, según parece por orden de su sucesor Sigerico, cuya estatua, curiosamente, se encuentra enfrente de esta, en Vitoria.
(Existe otra estatua de Ataulfo, sin el escudo con Gala Placidia, en la Plaza de Oriente. Tal vez duplicada, o mal identificada)
