The Sharp-tailed Grouse are very active on their lek, or dancing ground, this month, as they try to impress the watching females with their male prowess. So... they dance, they make themselves big, they rush about, strut, hoot, chirp, and leap into the air in a flurry of wingbeats, talons ready to slash at their rival if they see an opening. It's very intense. By the end of mating season many of them are bloodied and bruised, and missing feathers. Grouse wars are serious business!

I'll be off to Amsterdam, then to Seattle, where I would be attending some training with my new employers for the next two weeks !

I hope you guys will have fun, exploring my previous photos. There are some really nice ones in my opinion that didn't get to see a lot of airtime since I haven't figured out Flickr yet then.

Have fun, and please keep the comments and faves coming while I'm away ! I will drop by from time to time, but it could be a little random !

Carlton Beach, Tasmania. I can totally see how surf photography could be addictive!

Be extra careful as you approach corners or blind spots when driving in the Rocky Mountains. Some wildlife are on the roads. Here a Hoary Marmot ventured out to lick the natural salt deposits on the asphalt. As a vehicle approached he high tailed it back to the safety of the ditch. My heart was in my throat thinking I might see something terrible happen to him, but all ended well on this day.

If he were to fall, it would have been 20 feet straight to the ground.

After realizing I've never posted it on flickr, it had to be done.

I know this photo shoot has had alot of airtime, but I wanted my name to fame too. Here the crew puts all the units back in the shop for the night. Seen here the units from left to right is the #42, a SF30B, the #43, a B23-7, and the #44, a B23-7. All Santa Fe heritage.

The difference was immediately noticeable. The moment we left the small town at the edge of the arterial road ninety-five in our rear view mirror, we were almost completely alone, following a route that snaked up into the hills of the island's rugged interior. In the ten kilometres that lay between us and the village where we planned to stop for lunch, we saw no more than two or three passing cars, a happy contrast to the crazy highway that runs from one resort to the next along the southern corridor between us and the busy Rhodes Town on the northeastern corner of the island.

Along the way we stopped at each one of the handful of tiny villages we passed through, to gaze out across forested landscapes, to peer into the insides of ornately decorated Greek Orthodox churches and nod politely to locals. Enjoying peaceful spaces that weren't overflowing with the trappings of modern tourism. And gradually we were moving towards the west coast of the island, in search of a place I'd spotted on the map that might offer a sunset photograph. Monolithos, an abandoned castle on a, well yes of course, a lump of rock that evidently gives the place its name.

There were three empty benches overlooking the scene on the broad pavement beside the road where we parked the car. With an hour of daylight to go, we sat at the one on the left. A young couple came and went from the middle bench, her face frozen in a distinctly Slavic Instagram pout as he took photos, before a heavily built middle aged man in ladies’ clothing took up residence and sent a buzzing drone into the cloudless sky above the pines. His small car seemed to be chock full of goodness knows what, almost as if he was living in it. You can't help wondering at a person's back story in moments like this, but sometimes things are held in the memory more clearly when they're left to the imagination.

Below us the monolith rose above the pine forest at our feet, flecked with the movement of human forms bustling over it like ants. Around its perimeter lay the remains of the stone wall, which encircled a pure white chapel that had survived the ravages of history in far better shape. Just for a moment imagine being a young sentry from Athens or Venice, posted here five hundred years ago, a long way from your family, alone in this silent place where east and west collide, with the Turkish mainland just a few miles away and a pirate infested Aegean Sea right in front of you. Like being a Roman centurion sent to guard Hadrian's Wall, but with better weather and suntanned marauders.

And talking of pirates and invaders, what on earth was going on with my phone? I'd taken a few snaps with it, and the location service display at the top of each of the first two told me quite correctly that we were in Rhodes. But why by the third image did it think we'd hopped across the water to Kos? It got worse. The final phone shot declared us to be in Turkey, yet we hadn't moved from the bench at all. My plan covers me for using my phone across the European Union and a few more countries besides. But not Turkey. I turned off my roaming data straight away. It was Saturday afternoon and I had been keeping one eye on the football scores at home. Much later, when my phone finally agreed that yes, we were indeed back in Greece, I discovered that it had cost me two pounds and thirty-five pence to learn that a one goal lead had been surrendered in the closing minutes of the game. Which only added to the disappointment of having an airtime provider that's not always completely sure what country we're in. I suppose it serves me right for looking at my phone when I might have been enjoying the view instead.

A unique feature of The Steel Curtain is this bridge, which is built over a walkway. It contains two layers of tracks: above, you cross the bridge via airtime hill and below, you cross again, in the opposite direction via zero-g stall.

This is my oldest friend, Bob, feeling his oats more than 51 years ago. We went to high school together, and our paths have intertwined at various points throughout life. I've said many times that I look at people as just another wildlife species, but the truth is this photo predates all my wildlife photography. Pretty wild nevertheless. Ah, the energy of youth!

Met this guy named Joey a couple weeks back at Alpental and had a blast. After talking on the lift we decided to ride together, mainly because I brought my camera and he wanted a shot of him going down a cliff drop lol. After that we spent the rest of our time up there exploring the pow up at Chair 2 and finding natty jumps. He definitely helped me get more comfortable spotting them, and getting some air. This is my favorite shot of the day (and one of my favorite shots I’ve ever took). Pulled a twist on a natty jump out of nowhere. What a hell of a great day

Equestrian Skijoring is a popular sport here in Colorado. A combination of rodeo and skiing, it is fascinating to watch these athletes throw caution to the wind racing against the clock and each other for cash, bragging rights, and of course a belt buckle. The speeds can reach up to 40 MPH, with the skier and the horse and rider working together to maximize their ability to navigate the course in the quickest time.

This event - held at the Ouray County Fairgrounds in Ridgway, CO, back in January - had a fan turnout greater than expected and took place over three days with weather ranging from crisp and sunny to near blizzard conditions. Combining speed, obstacles, and teamwork, it's quite a spectacle. Here, the skier was unable to hold onto the tow rope through a jump and was miraculously able to stick the landing after putting some flourish into his airtime.

Congrats on Explore!

If you’re not a fan of the rodeo, you might want to check your pulse! Showcasing the best of the best is what the Calgary Stampede is all about.

A beautiful city that is just 4+ hours from Glacier NP and within 3+ hours of both Banff and Jasper NP’s in Canada. When planning this trip, as a wildlife guy I was looking past the rodeo portion to the three National Parks that we would visit on this trip…Banff, Jasper and Olympic in Washington state. I truly had no idea how much I would enjoy photographing the rodeo! My biggest regret of the trip was not taking my camera to the Chuckwagon races and Indigenous Relay races (maybe my favorite event) the night before.

Thanking God this morning that we said yes to this trip, set practical money concerns aside to create a memory that I can share with you now, and the staff, should someday a nursing home be in my future.

I went out to do a quick portrait session with a couple on Saturday morning, and afterwords my wife and I decided to have some jumping fun. We may have to use this for the Christmas card this year. ;-))

How did I do that?

Jump and shoot, right timing, good light and some friends!

I know flowers get most of the airtime, but I happen to like leaves. Thus I've started a new project where I try to present interesting compositions of leaves I find while walking around the Botanic Garden. Here is the first installment.

A scene not likely to happen again, CP (WCXX) 4069 and BCR (BCOL) 4625 which have crossed paths in the last 25 years meet up once again in Squamish, BC during the West Coast Railway Associations Polar Express Event. Interesting side note I had my PGE Airtime K5H on 4069 while 4625 had its Airtime K5L making for some nice sounding horns that afternoon.

one of my personal favourites of the trip

these kids were absolutely awesome - they jumped ca. 100 times just for me! i took hundreds of pictures - showed the pics to them afterwards. they liked them - later we met the kids again in the village and everyone around knew us and smiled and were just kind to us. actually it was pretty easy to know everyone in cumuru cause it's such a dreamy lonely place in that time of the year - if you meet tourists there the most of them are brazilians... great place to be!

Strobist info: Nikon D50 with on-camera Sunpak flash bounced off ceiling and triggering (with eBay slave triggers) two off-camera flash units (SB 600 and SB 28), which are aimed through a glass vase behind me. Both off-camera flashes were set to 1/4 power.

Obviously, the hair has had some photoshoppery, but the lighting effects are real.

Thanks to Steph for loaning me a couple flash units.

Last of autumn peaked up north. The rising fog and golden light of the rising sun revealed this scene to my eye in the sky. The quality of the Zenmuse X5s camera is worth the extra weight and bulk over my Mavic 2 Pro and Zoom, although the majority of the airtime is with the Mavic 2 Pro though.

I think this is my favorite, especially when viewed LARGE
