Sarah and Todd Palin are people who see America, it seems, as being so imperfect, imperfect enough, that they're pallin' around with secessionists who would break away from their own country. Why isn’t that association discussed more? For 20 years to listen to that with a sense of condoning it — that does say something about character - or lack of it.

As John McCain says, "We need to know the full extent of the relationship . . . I do care, and Americans should care, about the relationship and whether she's being truthful and candid about it."

While McCain's motto –is “Country First," the Alaskan Independence Party's motto is the exact opposite -- "Alaska First -- Alaska Always." Todd Palin was a registered member of the Alaska Independence Party (AIP) for eight years.

Todd Palin first registered to vote in 1989 at the age of 25. From 1995 to 2002 he was registered to vote as a member of the Alaskan Independence Party. - which, since the 1970s, has been pushing for a legal vote for Alaskans to decide whether or not residents of the 49th state can secede from the United State.. In late August 2008, The Politico reported that Todd Palin was registered to vote as an independent ("undeclared"), and had never registered as a Republican.

One can easily assume that a husband and wife influence each other's beliefs. If Sarah Palin were ever to actually hold a news conference, perhaps a journalist could ask her what she and her husband really do think of secessionism in their home state. Until then, we only have the repetition of buzzwords from her campaign speeches, attacking their opponent for supposed association which did not include the membership and videotapes of the Palins.

“My government is my worst enemy. I’m going to fight them with any means at hand.” This was former revolutionary terrorist Bill Ayers back in his old Weather Underground days, right? Imagine what Sarah Palin is going to do with this incendiary quote as she tears into Barack Obama this week.

Only one problem: The quote is from Joe Vogler, the raging anti-American who founded the Alaska Independence Party. Inconveniently for Palin, that’s the very same secessionist party that her husband, Todd, belonged to for seven years and that she sent a shout-out to as Alaska governor earlier this year. (“Keep up the good work,” Palin told AIP members. “And God bless you.”)

So who are these America-haters that the Palins are pallin’ around with? . . . The Republican ticket is working hard this week to make Barack Obama’s tenuous connection to graying, ’60s revolutionary Bill Ayers a major campaign issue.

But the Palins’ connection to anti-American extremism is much more central to their political biographies. . . .

Todd Palin, all sources agree, has played a significant role as a policy adviser to his wife's administration. . . . As governor, she sent a video tape to the most recent 2008 convention telling the delegates to "keep up the good work" and calling their convention "inspiring."

. . . Here is a little history on the Alaska Independence Party. The Party was founded by an ultra-rightist gold miner, Joe Vogler in the 1970s with an "anti-American" platform. Palin has denounced those abroad in oil rich countries who "hate America." Joe Vogler hated America. He said in the 1970s, "I'm an Alaskan, not an American. I have no use for America or her damned institutions."

Later Vogler said that "the fires of hell are frozen glaciers compared to my hatred of the US government. And I won't be buried under their damn flag....when Alaska is an independent nation they can bring my bones home." He said this in an oral history interview at the University of Alaska in 1991, at which time Bill Ayers had rejected his own past and had become respectable. Two years later Vogler disappeared. A criminal subsequently confessed to murdering him in a conflict over the sale of plastic explosives (which may suggest terrorism).

Webster's Dictionary defines a demagogue as "a leader who obtains power by means of impassioned appeals to the emotions and prejudices of the populace."

Governor Palin, in her stump speeches this week, fits this dictionary definition. Palin falsely and despicably portrays Senator Obama as a terrorist sympathizer or perhaps even a terrorist himself because he served on the board of a Chicago educational reform organization with Bill Ayers. Palin does not tell her crowds that Senator Obama was a child when Ayers was involved in anti-Vietnam war bombings and that Senator Obama has condemned such activities.

This "guilt by association" smear is designed to appeal to the emotions of Americans who are fearful of more terrorist attacks from Middle Eastern terrorists, hence her rallies also emphasize Senator Obama's middle name. Palin is appealing to long standing nativist prejudices -- the fear of the stranger in our midst. . . .

Palin claims that Obama is un-American because he does not see the country as she and her followers do.

But according to news reports, Governor Palin and her husband have held recent memberships in the Alaskan Independence Party, a group working for the secession of Alaska from America.

Could not such a recent association be fairly deemed to be un-American?

One of the more noteworthy responses to John McCain's massive robocall campaign tying Barack Obama to Bill Ayers has been from parents whose children have been on the receiving end of the incendiary calls. Many have contacted the Huffngton Post detailing concerns that their kids were being told, in essence, that the possible next president of the United States associates with terrorist figures.

"My daughter answered the phone today and began listening to the most disturbing call regarding bombing and terrorists. She ran with the phone to get me, I heard just the end snippet of the call and immediately called the number cited as responsible," wrote a reader from North Carolina. "I was so angry and let them have it. I had to explain to my 7-year-old daughter that no one was bombing anyone else. This was a horrific experience."
