This was a shot I had been longing to do when I was last down in Schierke, this is a stone's throw away from the apartment I was staying in. Unexpectedly it was a very unseasonably cold evening and I spent the majority of the LE pacing up and down. It was also a very clear night so that said I was happy for no heat distortion and the stars in all their glory could be seen perfectly.
LE star shots can be tricky in exposed areas, luckily there were a few street lamps and so I aimed for the furthest one to get an auto focus, then switched the lens back to manual before setting off the shutter, which in this case was for 20 minutes or there about.
If stuck for focus points in the dark, either use a powerful laser pointer, a torch which can be adjusted to a narrow band which you can aim at a tree or a relatively far away object or even better still, set up the camera to point in a general direction, take a run with the torch, switch it on and leave it on the ground, head back and get your focus aiming at the torch. Switch back to manual and you will have good sharp focus for your image.
If all above fails, use the LV display and zoom in on something light, manually then focus until the light source is smallest on the screen, that should just about do it but it's sometimes pure guess work. I've seen so many potentially great night time shots wrecked because of bad focus, there's quite a few little cheats to by this problem.

Sunset and reflection captured from Barassie Beach in Ayrshire, Scotland.
The shifting sandbanks often create these slowly emptying pools as the tide goes out on the beach at Barassie. I captured this handheld at arms length with some much practiced blind aiming.
The sun setting over the Isle of Arran is one of the most beautiful benefits of living in this part of the world.

Magnifique escapade de fin d'été dans la péninsule Acadienne et la Gaspésie. J'ai repris la photographie et Monique et moi étions plus que dus pour retourner en Gaspésie après plus de 42 ans! J'y ai fait quelque belle rencontre d'oiseau rare comme Jean Blais un gars fort sympathique. Je vais vous présenter dans le désordre comme c'est mon habitude les prises que j'ai retenues.
Le matin du 8 septembre il y avait un grand vent du nord et la marée haute était prévue pour 12h30 à Kamouraska et c'était très nuageux, c'est un endroit que j'affectionne pour sa poissonnerie et les superbes paysages et bâtiments. Après avoir repéré un groupe de Pluviers argenté et étudié leurs déplacements, je m'étais installé derrière une pierre du rivage à plusieurs centaines de pieds d'eux dans l'espoir d'essayer de capturer les pluviers argentés qui sont plutôt farouches mais qui effectuaient une remontée du rivage vers moi. J'y étais depuis plus d'une heure et j'étais trempé et complètement gelé d'être couché au sol patiemment sur le gravier et les algues détrempés. C'est alors qu'un faucon Pèlerin est arrivé en rase motte et a fait fuir le groupe Pluvier argenté tant attendu... J'avais bien fait quelques prises mais j'espérais une prise plein cadre. C'est alors qu'arriva un oiseau inattendu et qui a sauvé mon avant-midi, Un courlis corlieu. Il était encore loin mais par chance il travaillait le rivage en mangeant lentement vers moi. C'est un magnifique oiseau mais plutôt méfiant et farouche. J'ai bien fait une centaine de prises avant de décider que j'en avais assez de geler et de retourner au VR ouo Monique m'attendait patiemment.

Beautiful late summer getaway in the Acadian Peninsula New Brunswick and Gaspésia. I got back into photography and Monique and I were more than happy to return to Gaspésia after more than 42 years! I made some nice encounter of rare bird like Jean Blais a very nice guy. I will present you in disorder as it is my habit the shots that I love.
On the morning of September 8th there was a strong north wind and the high tide was scheduled for 12:30 in Kamouraska Quebec and it was very cloudy, it is a place I love for its fish market and the beautiful landscapes and buildings of the old town. After spotting a group of Black-bellied Plovers and studying their movements, I settled behind a shore stone several hundred feet away from them in the hope of trying to capture the Black-bellied Plovers who are rather shy, but were working the shore towards me. I had been there for over an hour and was soaking wet and completely frozen from lying on the ground on the gravel and sodden algae. It was then that a Peregrine Falcon arrived on a low ground swep and chased away the long-awaited Black-bellied Plovers group ... I had made a few catches but I was hoping for a full frame that never happened.
Then came an unexpected bird and saved my morning, A Whimbrel. He was still far away but luckily he was working the shore slowly eating towards me. It is a beautiful bird but rather suspicious and fierce. I did a good hundred shots before I decided I was tired of freezing and went back to the RV where Monique was waiting for me patiently.
Drôle de coïncidende !
Il y a deux semaines, je photographiais mes premières Rhyssa persuasoria. En me renseignant sur elles, j'apprenais qu'elles parasitaient les larves du Sirex géant, Urocerus gigas. Je me disais que j'aimerais bien voir cette espèce un jour. Et ce week-end surprise ! Autour d'un gros tas de bois fraichement coupé, de nombreuses rhysses et... cette sirex en train de pondre !
C'est un gros hyménoptère, pouvant mesurer jusqu'à 40mm, qui fait partie des Symphytes (comme les tenthrèdes). On les appelle communément guêpe à scie. Les deux sexes sont dépourvus d'aiguillons venimeux et ne peuvent donc pas piquer. Mais la ressemblance avec un frelon est assez marquée lorsqu'on ne connait pas bien les insectes, ce qui peut lui porter chance... ou au contraire malheur...
La femelle pond dans le bois mourant de conifères, mais les troncs récemment abattus l'attirent également. Il arrive parfois que la larve continue son développement dans du bois destiné à faire des charpentes par exemple. L'adulte éclot alors dans la maison ! Mais pas d'inquiétude si cela vous arrive, les sirex ne pondent pas à nouveau dans ce genre de bois. Peut être pas assez nourrissant pour les larves, en tout cas pas intéressant ! Et en plus elles ne piquent pas, donc aucune excuse pour ne pas les faire sortir de la maison au lieu de les tuer ;)
Autre fait intéressant, lorsque la femelle pond dans le bois, elle inocule en même temps les spores de champignons du genre Stereum. En se développant, ces spores forment du mycélium indispensable au développement des larves.

Speaking of wings...I have no explanation as to why its right wing is soooo long! I'm guessing it has something to do with the fact that I wasn't aiming at the bird, but just snapped as it flew by and caught a bad angle???

L'hiver, entre autre, j'aime me rendre au fleuve afin d'y observer les glaces qui descendent.
Souvent j'y observe des rapaces qui profitent du transport gratuit !
Ce fût la première fois que j'y observai des pygargues prendre des bains d'eau glacée...
Ici, sans doute un jeune de première année. Il atteindra sa maturité vers 4-5 ans.
