2021-11-06, Saturday afternoon, a walk through Zons with Flickr friend Only Klaus.
The mill tower, which was probably built around 1390 from basalt ashlar and field fire bricks, was designed as a windmill tower when it was built as a south-western corner and defensive tower of the city fortifications of Zons. According to the latest findings, the Zonser Mühle was already equipped with a rotatable, lobed hood and an internal agitator.
Since the shutdown over 100 years ago, the entire internal mill technology has been included
Fortunately, the grinder and gears have remained unchanged to this day.
Top loader, front loader, agitator, high efficiency...so many choices.........

In an attempt to repel demonstrators, agitators, and rioters, Chicago raises its metaphorical drawbridges. The ominous clouds portend a calamitous future as C-19 still lurks within the shadows of the city biding its time, as surely it will strike again. How much more can the city and its inhabitants withstand? Frightened they must be. Not a soul in sight.

Last night my city continued with a planned fireworks show to honor the front-line heroes of Covid19. Salt Lake City had a curfew because of the rioting happening. It was strange to sit and watch them with so much chaos in the city.
Today I was very deliberate in choosing the color red and the quote to accompany it. Though the chaos caused by the rioting is not beautiful the fires and burning anger are supposed to be represented. The tensions need to cool and the agitators stirring up the violence and causing destruction need to be held accountable. How is this going to end? The nightly curfews? Tear gas, rubber bullets? How did we get here? I have no answers and feel powerless.

I've carried this little scar everyday since sometime in 1950 or 1951. I was watching my mother do laundry. The machine she was using was what is known as a wringer washer. It just a tub in which there was an agitator. On top were a set of rollers that the clothes were put through to wring out the water. It was driven by an electric motor mounted under the tub and connected to the washers mechanism by a drive belt. This was not a new machine. It was something my Dad had scrounged up by way of his family and it was there to fill a need until he could afford a new one. The closest image I could find on the web was of a machine from the thirties. At any rate the drive belt was not covered. Safety was the responsibility of the consumer. Back to me. Mom was busy doing our laundry. She noticed me being interested in the electric motor and the spinning belt. "Chucky, don't touch that belt!" No sooner had she turned her back than I had touched the belt and had blood running from the gash that created the scar pictured. This scar is what should have been a daily reminder of a valuable lesson that I carry to this day. Alas no, it's a harbinger of a character trait that has served to both propel and hinder me throughout my life. If somebody tells me I can't, I'm more likely to go ahead and try what ever I've been told I'm incapable of doing. Sometimes I can, sometimes I can't but I generally feel better knowing the answer by way of effort and experience. HMM! Thanks for any views, faves and comments.

It's been gutting them to know it never ends - obedience and sin
Locked down in the safety net, opiated by the televison set
Remember that you had a choice, opened up your mouth and had a voice
All you need to know is what you've done, set aside a future for no one

She became what they would say was just an agitator in the way

I've visited Sri Lanka during war and peaceful times. This scene is from my most recent trip during a much welcomed time of peace. I join the people of Sri Lanka in their sorrow and condemnation of the bombings that rocked this little island yesterday.
The Sri Lankans have always prided themselves in their ability to offer religious tolerance to all. Many religions can be found in the Buddhist country with Muslims and Hindus living side by side as well. About 6 months ago, some tensions broke out in the ancient city of Kandy in the highlands. Outside agitators were squashed. Hopefully the group responsible for this carnage will be too.

Seaton Carew is a seaside resort in County Durham, northern England, with a population of 6,018 (2017). The area is named after a Norman French family called Carou who owned lands in the area and settled there, while 'Seaton' means farmstead or settlement by the sea. The resort falls within the unitary authority of Hartlepool.
It separated from most of Hartlepool by the Durham Coast Line. The resort is on the North Sea coast and north of the river Tees estuary.
There is evidence that the area was occupied in Roman times as vestiges of Roman buildings, coins and artefacts are occasionally found on the beach. Later during the reign of Henry I, Seaton came into the possession of Robert De Carrowe and the settlement changed its name to Seaton Carrowe. In medieval times salt was extracted from sea water by evaporation and ash from the fuel used to remove the water was dumped on North Gare and now forms a series of grass covered mounds on the golf course.[9] A Gilbertine priory or cell to Sempringham Priory was established in the Seaton area although so far no trace has been found. In 1667 a gun fortification was built on the promontory of Seaton Snook to defend the mouth of the Tees, particularly against the Dutch—remnants of these fortifications can be seen today.
Seaton Carew was a fishing village but grew in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries as a seaside holiday resort for wealthy Quaker families from Darlington, effectively founding Seaton Carew as a seaside resort. Many stayed at the rows of stucco houses and hotels built along the seafront and around The Green—a turfed square facing the sea.
In 1867 a hoard of Spanish silver dollars was revealed in the sands following a heavy storm.
In 1874 the Durham and Yorkshire Golf Club (now Seaton Carew Golf Club) was founded by Duncan McCuaig, with a 14-hole course on coastal land to the south-east of Seaton Carew. Four holes were added in 1891 and in 1925 further work was carried out with the guidance of renowned golf course designer Alister MacKenzie.
In 1882 Seaton Carew was incorporated into West Hartlepool and the Museum of Hartlepool records that a small riot involving Irish labourers took place in the late Victorian era, when townsfolk mistook them for Fenian agitators.
Just north of Seaton was the works of the West Hartlepool Steel & Iron Company. In 1898 Christopher Furness and W.C. Gray of West Hartlepool purchased the Stockton Malleable Iron Works, the Moor Steel and Iron Works, and the West Hartlepool Steel and Iron Works to form the South Durham Steel and Iron Company. This became part of the British Steel Corporation in 1967. The West Hartlepool Steel and Iron Works is thought to have closed in 1979.
Tourists and visitors are attracted to the resort's four miles of sandy beach, promenade, arcades, and fish and chip restaurants. The beach is regularly cleaned and is patrolled by lifeguards during the summer holidays. In 2019 the main beach was given an 'excellent' bathing rating by the Environment Agency and was granted a Seaside Award by environmental charity Keep Britain Tidy.
The artist and leading railway poster designer Frank Henry Mason (1875–1965) was born at Seaton Carew and briefly worked in a Hartlepool shipyard.
The science fiction writer Mark Adlard was born in Seaton Carew in 1932[53] and for a time he lived on The Green.
Neil Warnock, football manager/pundit, lived in Seaton Carew when he played for Hartlepool United.
Footballer Evan Horwood grew up in Seaton before moving to Yorkshire to play for Sheffield United. He has also played for Carlisle United F.C., Hartlepool United and Tranmere Rovers.
John Darwin and his wife Anne lived in Seaton when John faked his death in a canoeing accident in 2002. The story made the news across the world and it inspired a BBC drama documentary on the Darwins' lives

Remember Storm Malik and Corrie? I mentioned previously how when we had a powercut I had gone to the little shop at Glenuig to try to get some gas. I had noticed several big plastic floats used to support the fish cages that are so commonplace in every bit of open water round here, washed up on the shore and the two or three usual fishing boats from Glenuig being tossed about on their moorings offshore.
So when I passed the little jetty today and saw a fisherman there I decided to stop for a chat, out of admiration for the work they do going out to sea in all sorts of weather.
He might have been dour and dull, but he wasn't. Like most of the people I have stopped to chat with, he wasn't a born and bred local. No, he was Max Fradders, as he is known, originally from Fulwood, Preston. And no village idiot either. The son of a school teacher I quickly found that he had an expletive laden view on almost everything, and despite living in the back o'beyond, was as in touch with the outer world as you could imagine, at the top of his game on world economics, business, politics, the environment, science, etc, etc. He had spent most of his life living in yurts, tents, a circus showman's caravan, carriages, for he was one of life's caravan warriors, protesting against, and fighting for so many public and private causes. He was a rebel, a rouser, a usurper, an agitator, and trouble maker with a lengthy criminal tab, banning him from travel to so many countries. But he was happy now, just minding his own business, living the simple life as a fisherman...mainly langostines. He would make a brilliant politician with his no-nonsense talk. But he wants a wife.
He had a small problem this morning. His fishing boat had sunk. But he had had the foresight to name it "Happy Return" and with the help of some mates and some pumps they had got her refloated. She's there, in my photo, looking a little guilty with herself at the bottom of the jetty, and Frad was busy trying to sort out the drowned engine. I apologised for taking up his time and distracting him from more urgent matters, but "No" he said, he enjoyed talking and chatting. And he said, not enough people go out of their way to talk to strangers. That made me feel good.
The forecast is not for a serious storm, but it will be blowy enough for me to put my storm flag up, the trust pirate jolly roger. I cut the edge off it and put some grapeshot holes in it to reduce its wind resistance: I don't want a snapped flagpole.
It seems, since my youth, I have become a vexillophile. It's not serious but I am quite passionate about flying the flag for the nationality of the guests about to arrive at our B&B, as a welcome. I find smaller nations, or newer countries seem to be touched by the gesture. Swiss, Belgians, Dutch, Polish, Finnish, Catalonians, etc. But I have no desire to fly Ukrainian or Palestinian flags. I won't join those bandwagons, although the Ukrainian one left a few years ago. Only the Palestinian, Hamas supporting one, lives on to annoy us. But my habit of displaying the national flag of our guests now causes a dilemma or two. We have Russian guests booked to arrive at the same time as VIP Finnish visitors. The Finns hate the aggressor Russians and all things Putin. I've already decided the Finnish flag takes precedence over the Russian flag. I'm not being political, but I'm not flying the flag of a country we are virtually at war with. It's an easy choice. Harder, though, is what I do when we have Israeli guests arrive in August. I would happily fly their flag, but in a country where so many including our BBC seem to sympathise with terrorists who have declared their intention to commit genocide and destroy Israel and their people, and the British Police who side with Palestinian flag waving activists and agitators, is it safe for me to extend such a welcome? Or do I continue to fly my pirate flag and tell them to take a leap off the plank? Opinions invited
Built in 1792, it is Ireland's most famous disused prison. It held throughout the years many famous Nationalists and Republicans, members of the Society of United Irishmen (1798), Young Irelanders (c1840s), Fenians and Land agitators, Parnell, Davitt. The leaders of the 1916 Ester Rising were executed here. The prison was closed in 1924.

I first noticed him when I was walking down Hollywood Blvd. He was about half a block behind me. I didn’t think much about it at the time. An hour later I saw him again. He pretended to read a newspaper at the bus stop when I turned around to look.
But I was sure that it was him. It wasn’t that he stood out in any way. He was of average height, weight and gait. He wasn’t dressed flashy or shabbily. What made him stand out was the hat. The hat perched on his head like a lighthouse beacon.
I went back to confront him. “Why are you following me?” I demanded. “What in the world are you talking about?” he replied. “You have been following me for blocks,” I said. “I’ve never seen you before,” he cried as he turned and started to run. I grabbed his arm but he twisted out of my grip. My arm shot up and knocked his hat off as he ran away. It landed at my feet.
Looks pretty good, I thought as I pondered my reflection in a store window.
I took to wearing the hat everyday. I thought that it made me look very sophisticated. I even went out and bought a pipe, though I never put tobacco in it.
At first my co-workers made fun of me. They thought that I was getting uppity and trying to look like a boss. I ignored them. Soon, though, one by one they all bought hats and started to wear them to work.
After work and on the weekends I started hanging out at a neighborhood coffee house. I never spoke. I would go in and point to this coffee pot and that pastry tray. I would overhear the waiters and waitresses gossip about me. I would chew on my pipe, but not light it. I became a notorious neighborhood character. Beatniks would read their poetry and look over at me for approval. A nod of my head would cause them to smile brightly. A shake from side to side would crush them.
My boss came in one day and ordered me to remove my hat. I refused. He told me that if I didn’t, he would fire me. I told him to stuff it. None of us would get rid of our hats, I say. We would all walk out first. Go ahead, he says. OK, I say. I turned to my co-workers who just looked down at their desks. To a man, they removed their hats and put them under their desks.
Cowards! I say to them. 'Fuck you', I say to the boss on my way out.
I don’t need that stupid job, I think. I can find another one better than that. “I am a neighborhood character”, I say out loud to no one in particular. I walk into the local café and order coffee and a Danish. “You’re early, sport”, the counterman says. “I’m not early or late”, I reply. “I’ve got all the time in the world, now”, I say. “How’s that?” he asks. “I quit my job”, I say.
“Smart move” he replies.
.
Finding another job was harder than I thought. My ex-boss kept telling prospective employers that I was an agitator and a troublemaker. My unemployment insurance ran out. I went through all of my savings. I cashed in my C.D.’s and I.R.A’s. I was behind on my rent. I hid from the bill collectors and my landlord. Finally, I was evicted from my apartment. My first night on the street I was robbed of everything but my knife.
I decided to become a mugger. After all, I had to eat. I picked out a likely victim on Hollywood Blvd. I followed him, waiting for the right moment when no one else would be around. He started looking back, but I pretended to read the newspaper. After an hour of this cat and mousing, he turned around and confronted me. He accused me of following him, which I denied. I started to turn and run, but he grabbed my arm. I twisted out of his grip and ran, but he managed to knock my hat off. A block down the street I turned and looked. He was trying on my hat.

"The Battle Of Stepney"
This is a black and white printed postcard published by Valentine's Series of the the Battle of Stepney, also known as the Siege of Sidney Street. Winston Churchill, the then Home Secretary, can be seen to the left of the photograph wearing a top hat.
from Wikipedia:
In December 1910 there was an attempted jewellery robbery at Houndsditch in the City of London by a gang of Latvian immigrants. The robbery resulted in the murder of three policemen, the wounding of two others, and the death of George Gardstein, the leader of the Latvian gang.
The police were informed that the final two members of the gang were hiding at 100 Sidney Street in Stepney. The police evacuated local residents from the environs, and on the morning of 3 January a firefight broke out. Armed with inferior weapons, the police sought assistance from the army.
The siege lasted for about six hours. Towards the end of the stand-off, the building caught fire; no single cause has been identified. One of the agitators in the building was shot before the fire took control. While the London Fire Brigade were damping down the ruins—in which they found the two bodies—the building collapsed, killing a fireman, Superintendent Charles Pearson.
In the summer of 1972 we were avid RV'ers. On this trip, we were visiting a camping site in Pine Mt. Georgia. Carolyn and I were wandering about in the woods. There was a blanket of ferns covering the ground. I dug up a small one to take home.
The fern has been a part of our family ever since. That was 36 years ago, and it has been in this old cast iron wash pot for 27 years now.
Cast iron wash pots were ubiquitous in the cotton mill villages. Every house had one of the them in the back yard. It has three small iron feet. Everybody back then made their own soap - lye soap.
-------------------------------------------------------------
Etymology:
Middle English, from Old English lēag; akin to Old High German louga lye, Latin lavare, lavere to wash, Greek louein
Date: before 12th century
1: a strong alkaline liquor rich in potassium carbonate leached from wood ashes and used especially in making soap and for washing ; broadly : a strong alkaline solution (as of sodium hydroxide or potassium hydroxide)2: a solid caustic (as sodium hydroxide)
------------------------------------------------------------
Almost all my kinfolks worked in the cotton mills, and Monday was wash day, always. The pot was filled with water and a wood fire was made under and around it. Wasn't long before the water started boiling. Add some powdered lye and throw some clothes in there. The lye began to foam and bubble. The agitator was a broom handle, the perfect tool for churning the clothes.
Anyway, you get the picture. But there's lots more to washing those clothes, but not here. :)
Now you understand where the wash pot began, before it was transformed by me into a fern pot.:~)

PS: This RV campground is only about 3 or 4 miles from what is still known as the Little White House, "Warm Springs, GA.
This is where president Franklin D. Roosevelt went to treat his crippling polio. He suffered lots more than he ever let on, but was adamant about forbidding all photographs that showed his wheel chair.
It would be great if he were here to show these young upstarts how to get the country going again, creating jobs, and get people out of the soup lines. They needed paying jobs, and he did that. We are in very near the same predicament today, as when he was faced with a country going bankrupt. The
Great Depression. Familiar ring to it?

Mont Orgueil (Jerriais for 'Mount Pride' or 'Haughty Mount') is a castle that overlooks the harbour of Gorey on the east coast of Jersey.
The site had already been fortified in the prehistoric period, but the construction of this castle was undertaken following the division of the Duchy of Normandy in 1204. The castle was first mentioned in 1212. The castle is first called 'Mont Orgeuil' in an ordinance issued by Pierre de Brézé, Lord of the Isles during the occupation by the French during the War of the Roses, in 1462.
The castle was the primary defence of Jersey until the development of gunpowder which then rendered the castle ultimately indefensible from Mont Saint Nicholas, the adjacent hill which overlooks the castle. Mont Orgueil was updated with platforms for artillery constructed in 1548 and 1549 under the direction of Henry Cornish, Lieutenant of the Earl of Hertford in Jersey. Cornish complained that earlier repairs to the donjon by Robert Raymont had left it so weak it was vulnerable to musket shot; "lyke a nadyl eye scarse abyll to byde a hagboshe." In 1543 he had asked for a "saker" cannon that would cover the sands between "Grovyll" and the castle, where the French had landed in the past.
Mont Orgueil was to be superseded by Elizabeth Castle off Saint Helier, the construction of which commenced at the end of the 16th Century. Walter Raleigh, Governor of Jersey in 1600, rejected a plan to demolish the old castle to recycle the stone for the new fortifications with the words: "'twere pity to cast it down".
The old castle continued to be used as the island's only prison until the construction of a prison in St. Helier at the end of the 17th Century. The English Government found it expedient to send troublesome agitators such as William Prynne and John Lilburne to Mont Orgueil far from the realm of England. The regicides Thomas Waite, Henry Smith, James Temple, Hardress Waller, and Gilbert Millington were transferred to Mont Orgueil in 1661.
During the English Civil War, from March 1643 the then Lieutenant Governor and Bailif of the island, Sir Philippe de Carteret held out for the Royalists in Elizabeth Castle, leaving his wife Anne de Carteret, and their son Philippe de Carteret to occupy Mont Orgueil. It was from Mont Orgueil that the Royalists under Sir George Carteret retook the island from Parliament in November 1643. In December 1651 the island was invaded by Parliament; however, faced with the prospect of modern artillery being deployed on the adjacent hill Mont St. Nicholas, the fortress was surrendered with generous terms allowing those inside to go to Elizabeth Castle.
A report for the States of Jersey in 1691 declared that the barracks accommodation was so dilapidated that it was impossible to quarter troops there. Two years later, the castle was stated to be in a ruinous condition and subsequently was abandoned as a prison, because Elizabeth Castle had been built and the castle was neglected and not needed any more.
Repairs were carried out 1730–1734 and for the rest of the century, parts of the castle were adapted for garrison accommodation. Given full access to the castle from 1795, Admiral Philippe d'Auvergne who was working for the British secret service, to destabilise the French Revolutionary government through an organisation he was running in Brittany and mainland Normandy including the smuggling of people with forged documents and materiel into France together with forged French Assignat notes, which were being mass-produced in London with the successful result of causing hyperinflation which raged in France until 1802. In 1800, the Corbelled Tower was fitted out for use by d'Auvergne as his headquarters.
In 1846, the castle was visited by Queen Victoria and Prince Albert. The castle has also hosted subsequent royal ceremonies to welcome George V in 1921 and Elizabeth II; inscriptions mark the occasions.
Until the second half of the 19th Century, the castle was open to the public on one day a year, Easter Monday, and crowds used to flock from all over the island. This is believed to be a survival of the pre-Reformation custom of visiting St. George's Chapel inside the castle on St. George's Day.
In a generally ruinous state at the time of its handover to the people of Jersey by the Crown on 28 June 1907, Mont Orgueil has been managed as a museum site since 1929, although during the Second World War German occupation (1940–1945), the occupying forces garrisoned the castle and added modern fortifications camouflaged to blend in with existing structures. The heritage site has been managed by the Jersey Heritage Trust since 1994.
A long building programme, which had the castle closed to the public for a lengthy period, was completed in 2006. Restoration work has opened up previously inaccessible areas of the castle to the public.
