He took all day to find on my last day in Samburu. Skittish gerenuk and a single vehicle that had spotted him as he broke cover gave him away. We watched him hunt as the sun dropped until we were told politely by a ranger that we should not still be out at that time. Very good looking cat.

More downtime at Laikipia Wilderness River camp. There was a huge web between my room and the mess area and I just had to get some shots of its occupants.

Nephila is a genus of araneomorph spiders noted for the impressive webs they weave. Nephila consists of numerous species found in warmer regions around the world, although some species formerly included in the genus have been moved to Trichonephila. They are commonly called golden silk orb-weavers, golden orb-weavers, giant wood spiders, or banana spiders.

After we had watched the african sun drop below the hills in Samburu we raced back along the river to find the lions that we had missed earlier. The light was almost gone and I had to rely on high iso, slow shutter speeds and hoped the animals didn’t move too quickly to get a few shots.

A nice group of Grévy's zebras in the early morning light.

Grévy's zebra is the largest living wild equid and the most threatened of the species. It is found in parts of Kenya and Ethiopia. Grévy's zebras' physical features can help to identify it from the other zebra species; their overall appearance is slightly closer to that of a mule, compared to the more "equine" (horse) appearance of the plains and mountain zebras. Compared to other zebra species, Grévy's are the tallest; they have mule-like, larger ears, and have the tightest stripes of all zebras. They have distinctively erect manes, and more slender snouts.

The Grévy's zebra live in semi-arid savanna, where they feed on grasses, legumes, and browse, such as acacia; they can survive up to five days without water. They differ from the other zebra species in that they do not live in a harem, and they maintain few long-lasting social bonds. Stallion territoriality and mother–foal relationships form the basis of the social system of the Grévy's zebra. In its native home this zebra is listed by the IUCN as endangered. Its population has declined from 15,000 to 2,000 since the 1970s. In 2016, the population was reported to be "stable"; however, as of 2020, the wild numbers are still estimated at only around 2,250 animals.

I love Laikipia Wilderness Camp and the ability to get out of the vehicle and shoot wildlife on your own terms. This young calf was wary and hid behind it’s mother’s legs but eventually came out of cover to enjoy a drink from the still flowing river. Taken one evening along the riverbank hiding behind scrub and feeling privileged to watch a family of elephants enjoy the water.

Samburu is a lovely place to watch elephants. We watched this pair meet and greet each other as they crossed the dried riverbed. The larger one chased the smaller one and then they tussled a little before eventually settling into an embrace.

This is the male cheetah that I have already posted a few high key shots of. This is when we first caught up with him first thing in the morning and he did move around a little. There were a few cars at the sighting which made it difficult to get a good uncluttered shot as he wove between the vehicles. He didn’t move far.

From the genus Burhinus. The Burhinus are commonly called thick-knee, stone-curlew or dikkop. They are medium-sized, terrestrial waders, though they are generally found in semi-arid to arid, open areas. Only some species of Burhinus are associated with water. Burhinus are characterised by their long legs, long wings and cryptic plumage. Most species have a short, thick, strong bill. Stone-curlews are found all over the world except Antarctica. They are mainly tropical, with the greatest diversity in the Old World.

This particular one had a young chick with it. I failed to get a decent photograph of the pair of them, foliage and a far too long lens were to blame.

That bull elephant in musth again. This guy was following a herd of matriarchs and their herd. Keeping an eye on a young bull family member and making sure he kept back from the rest of the herd. At some point the herd slowed down and the bull decided to get a little amorous with this termite mound where he snuggled it with his trunk, dry humped it and then scratched his butt on it. A lovely sight of a Somali Ostrich couple and their charge. Ostriches tend to lay their eggs and leave them with a caretaker couple who hatch the whole brood and look after them as one large family.

Here we have the female being followed by the chicks, they shortly deviated from the path and started to follow the male.

Giza the black panther or melanistic leopard whatever you prefer. Reportedly very relaxed and showing very well in daylight as well as on night drives before we arrived. The particular week I visited she decided to become elusive and we only found her 3 nights out of 7 and not once in daylight.

While we were tucked away on a viewing platform near a dam having lunch and photographing the elephants that were relaxing in the water. This pair of giraffes came down for a drink. Always cautious at the water they tentatively took it in turns to grab a drink while the other kept watch.

Bull elephant in musth. This guy was following a herd of matriarchs and their herd. Keeping an eye on a young bull family member and making sure he kept back from the rest of the herd. At some point the herd slowed down and the bull decided to get a little amorous with this termite mound where he snuggled it with his trunk and dry humped it. Samburu, March 2024

I was very lucky to watch a pair of courting paradise flycatchers on the porch of my room while staying at Laikapia Wilderness’s river camp. This female perched on the tree just outside my front door and was displaying to her mate.

The last morning at Laikipia Wilderness camp. There was some lion activity in the early hours, possibly the lions we had been looking for for a few days. When we arrived at the scene there was no carcass but a pool of blood where a kill had possibly taken place. The lions had fled, we saw the back end of one female only. There were hyenas everywhere.

Sizable herd of elephants walking, mid morning, with purpose. Possibly heading down to the river for a drop to drink or just trying to evade an amorous bull that was in musth and following them. We just sat and watched them pass in a matter of minutes.
