In September 1978, while the country was still accessible to tourists, I left with a small group for Afghanistan. At an altitude of 1900 m and far from any agglomeration, in a steep valley at the confluence of the rivers Hari-rud and Jam, I found myself in front of the splendid minaret of Jam. 65 meters high, it is entirely covered with a geometrical decoration in relief with a kufic inscription in turquoise tiles. It would have been built in 1194 by the great Ghurid sultan Ghiyas-od-din (1153-1203).
Since 2002, it is registered by UNESCO on the list of the world heritage in danger. Scientists have not had access to it since 2010.

The superb valley of Bamiyan was photographed here from ... the head of the Grand Bouddha. You could access to it through a network of tunnels leading to the upper part of the niche from where the statue was carved.
