The advantages of turf roofs (also called sod roofs) are many. They are very heavy, so they help to stabilize the house; they provide good insulation; and they are long-lasting.
Turf roofs in Norway are a tradition and you will see them everywhere. Roofs in Scandinavia have probably been covered with birch bark and sod since prehistory. During the Viking and Middle Ages most houses had sod roofs. In rural areas sod roofs were almost universal until the beginning of the 18th century. Tile roofs, which appeared much earlier in towns and on rural manors, gradually superseded sod roofs except in remote inland areas during the 19th century. Corrugated iron and other industrial materials also became a threat to ancient traditions. But just before extinction, the national romantics proclaimed a revival of vernacular traditions, including sod roofs. A new market was opened by the demand for mountain lodges and holiday homes. At the same time, open air museums and the preservation movement created a reservation for ancient building traditions. From these

The time came for me to take a day out of my holiday and go for a good hike. This involved a four hour drive from New Plymouth into the heartland of the north island. As the sun rose, a little way south of Te Kuiti I stopped for a short while to take in these views.
Another advantage to dressing her up is that I get some decent poses out of her even when she is just doing regular things, waiting for the car pool. Since bending really isn't an option, she almost looks like she is posing for this shot! Plus, I can probably out run her in those heels and corset... so many camera is safe.

I had a day trip to Norfolk to take advantage of the fine autumn weather, hoping to see in particular, the Brown Shrike at Warham Greens and this little bird, the first Red-breasted Flycatcher I've ever seen.
The Brown Shrike had apparently gone first thing, so after 2 hours of lugging heavy 500mm f4 and tripod around the site at Warham Greens, I went to Wells Woods, just managed to get a spot in the rather pricey car park, the place was rammed with people. Opting for the lighter 500mm f5.6 to walk around and handle, I couldn't say this was a particularly confiding bird during my 3 hours vigil. But for about an hour it showed regularly in the shadows and undergrowth below our vantage point on the banked rim of The Dell, on the edge of the wood. Light degenerated rapidly into the fringe of the wood and I consider myself lucky to have got this shot on one of the occasions it popped up. Quite a soft shot, due to the ridiculously slow shutter; I dialled up the ISO after this for a faster shutter (at the risk of severe grain) but it never allowed a further opportunity.

The advantages of living in the country :-). In the small forest directly behind my house sleep and hide very often many deer. But they are extremely shy. I lurk the animals in principle not, because I do not want to drive them away permanently.
I was just about to photograph ice crystals on the bushes in my garden, when it suddenly heard loud breathing and panting behind me. I could not believe it that two deer ran through the meadow, and I was even ready with the camera (more or less :-) ).
What an experience!

Somebody decided a quick 'rest break' was needed........would of been rude really not to get the camera out; coat, boots and feet were already wet so I thought why not......but I did feel truly soaked cold and horrible by the time we got home!
I had to get up very early on Friday to drop off my wife at the Portland Jetport. I took advantage to that to stop and take in the sunrise over the Portland harbor. The structure is what remains of a railroad trestle for the Grand Trunk Railroad dating back to the late 1800's, In 1984 it was badly damaged by a fire and had been left in that state until a year or so ago when the section on the right was removed as it had become quite hazardous to boat traffic. I did not know that part had been removed and was rather disappointed to find it missing.
Taking advantage of the cool and drizzly conditions by the River Tyne, a jogger makes his way along the waterfront possibly glad of the flat ground just here - for sure the climb back into Newcastle city-centre will give the lungs and quads more than a decent work out.
Meantime, two-car class 156 'Sprinter' unit 156480 slowly makes its way over the High Level Bridge as it edges towards Central Station with Northern's 12.49pm Whitby - Carlisle service (2N15).
The gulls are circling overhead - better not stop now!

Cubes houses reflected
Reflecties van de kubuswoningen
I have checked with a search for the yellow cube houses on Flickr, and have come to the conclusion that this is a special one.
So many pictures of the yellow cube houses, and no reflections in the first pages. Time to make a change and look down to look up.
The weather was completely windstill , not a ripple on the water , no soothing breeze in my face. Later in the morning the wind was coming up a little bit, but not at this moment.
I know the location Oude Haven in Rotterdam well, so I know exactly where to take a picture to see the reflections of the cube houses. So i do admit I have an bit of an advantage here.
I had a very early morning meeting, the advantage of which is that I saw the sun come up -- albeit briefly. Another day to breath; now be thankful (cue Fairport Convention right about now): www.youtube.com/watch?v=VXNM0dpHMq4 Musical factoid, Richard Thompson, one of the founders of Fairport Convention, which many credit as the main influence for what we now call Folk Rock, is the only performer I have seen live five times. He has not once disappointed me in a performance. The opportunity in Toronto to see him in a small venue with about 100 people is perhaps the highlight of my life in terms of live music performances.... He played for almost three hours and we soaked up every little bit of it.
Males are striking black-and-white flycatchers with a conspicuous complete white collar, all dark tail, and white rump. Females can be difficult to separate from other flycatchers but have a large white primary patch on the wing. Breeds in deciduous forests, nesting in cavities and quick to take advantage of nest boxes. Spends much of the non-breeding season in miombo and other broad-leaved woodlands. The song is a high-pitched series of whistled notes; alarm call is a dry "pik."
This years Members Meeting saw demonstration runs of the Ground Effect F1 cars that raced between 1978 and 1983.
These Ground Effect cars were developed to take advantage of the Bernoulli principle, whereby the gap between the ground and the cross sectional underside of the car is reduced to maximise downforce. By minimising that gap between ground and car, the air underneath accelerates faster than the air above and creates that pressure system that sucks the car to the ground, increasing grip and cornering speed.
In 1983, the whole Ground Effect system was banned due to the ever increasing cornering speeds that these cars could achieve. Concerns were raised that if the force was suddenly removed, the cars would lose all grip and have an accident (similar to what can happen today if an F1 car loses a rear wing suddenly).
In 1979, Arrows ran their A2 design, a car that had huge downforce but no wings, leading to some handling problems. In 1980, designers Tony Southgate and David Wass developed the A3 model, based around an aluminium monocoque chassis and the Cosworth DFV engine. In-board suspension was used to provide the largest possible ground-effect tunnels and the front and rear wings were used to provide a better handling balance.
Overall Arrows took 7th place in the 1980 F1 season with drivers Jochen Mass and Riccardo Patrese, with a best finish of 2nd at Long Beach.
This shot of the Arrows Cosworth A3 was taken after the demonstration run as the cars were filing back into the paddock.

One of the advantages of railfanning in Northwest Montana is that you get two cracks at autumn. A few weeks after the aspens have turned yellow and then get blown away, the tamaracks turn yellow in a final burst of color before winter arrives. 776 screwed around in Shenandoah yard for a couple hrs which worked to my advantage for some good afternoon light.
One advantage I've found in buying a pre-loved camera is that it came with a basic instruction booklet and a more advanced CD. Plus it has a beautiful brown leather case. It was obviously not pre-loved for long as it was boxed with all accessories tidily wrapped inside.
I tried it out around the garden and found its operation rather different from that of my a6000 and look forward to understanding more about it today.
Have the pleasure of looking at yesterday's shots on my new 24" screen today. (It's not even the 25th of any month....)

A man takes advantage of an available "Piano. Push. Play" piano sitting in an empty Lownsdale Square. The acoustics of the park coupled with the pianos' resonance created an inviting atmosphere for an intimate concert for one: me!
I considered using "Saturday In The Park" as my title but, it seemed cliché (and too obvious).

This was pointed out to me so i took advantage to get pictures of the snake. Actually thought it made for a good photograph.
This is a little noisy and not the sharpest image but it's still cool. I'm not sure if I was alone or if Frank was with me, but this was one of our favorite spots.
We loved taking advantage of getting a rec pass from the Army wander around out in the wilds of the giant military reservation that the Alaska Railroad threaded through on its way north. On this cloudy late summer evening the clouds shrouding the Chugach Mountains are dramatic as a big 130N north OX is seen passing the north end of Reves siding and swinging into the broad curve here at MP 129.2 only 15 miles into their 356 mile overnight journey. On the headpin trailing the twin SD70MACs is a block of loaded ABI cement hoppers trailed by the normal 80 or more empty tank cars headed back to the huge Flint Hills North Pole Refinery for another load of jet fuel....back in better days.

I took advantage of some overnight rains (see previous shot in my photo stream) and did this hike just north of Shores Lake in western Arkansas. I think this was my first visit to these unnamed falls in the summer. It's only about a 6 footer.
It was during this shot that I was stung in the middle of my back by some giant flying insect. I hit the trail to the car after that.

One of the advantages of a lith two tray development is the possibility of a higher tonal separation of the shadows, especially with less detail in dark areas.

After a summer of intense heat in the capital, we took advantage of this past weekend to get closer to the Sierra de Madrid, specifically Navacerrada, to enjoy some autumn days at the end of August.
The temperatures were very pleasant, cool, with highest which did not exceed 64F (18ºC) and lowest which dropped to 45F (7ºC). Although it did not rain, the clouds were dense and offered nice shadows and striking lights.
In this view you can contemplate La Bola del Mundo, with its characteristic antennas on the summit, located at 7431 feet (2,265 meters) above the sea level. Below is La Barranca Valley and the old Sanatorium Santo Ángel in La Barranca, abandoned in the mid-90s. It was a hospital for tuberculosis and a psychiatric hospital.
All this scenery is part of Sierra de Guarradama National Park.
The photo was taken on Saturday evening, while we were enjoying a very pleasant walk through the village of Navacerrada.
I hope that you all had a good weekend, the last of August, and that you continue to enjoy health and wellness.
Beste viewed large.
Good Monday and nice beginning of this new week in which we say goodbye to the month of August!

Croatia is a country in Southeast Europe. It borders Slovenia to the northwest, Hungary to the northeast, Serbia to the east, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Montenegro to the southeast, sharing a maritime border with Italy. Croatia was part of the former Yugoslavia. A population of 4 million, most of whom are Catholics. Zagreb is the capital. Balanced between the Balkans and Central Europe, this country has been passed between rival kingdoms, empires and republics for thousands of years. If there is an advantage to this ongoing disruption, it is in the rich cultural legacy each has left behind. From Venetian palaces, Napoleonic fortresses, Slavic churches, Viennese mansions to socialist sculptures. But most attraction is the coastline with the remarkable clarity of the water and white pebbly beach. Despite being the fastest rising holiday destination in Europe in the past decade, Croatia still doesn't feel overrun by tourists. There are long sandy and winding beaches too, perfect for lazy days. Croatia is a beautiful country to discover many different landscapes. Dubrovnik is according to many one of the most beautiful cities on the Adriatic coast. This city in Croatia is also called the Pearl of the Adriatic. The historic center, or rather the completely walled fortress city of Dubrovnik, is on the list of UNESCO World Heritage. This part is still in a remarkably good condition. A wonderful place to discover on foot, it is a city with a diverse, but also rough past. Remarkably, the Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque churches, as well as the various monasteries, palaces and fountains have been preserved. They all tell their own story from the Middle Ages.
Dubrovnik is a city on the Adriatic Sea in southern Croatia. It is one of the most prominent tourist destinations in the Mediterranean Sea. The history of the city probably dates back to the 7th century. The city is completely surrounded by defensive walls and fortresses. Franciscan Church and Monastery is situated at the Placa, the main street of Dubrovnik. It's a large complex consists of a monastery, a church, a library and a pharmacy. This church is lovely inside. The library contains over 70,000 books. The earliest monastery was built in the 13th century. The monastery was built in 1360 in late Romanesque style. A beautiful cloister garden hidden away from the busy tourist places in Dubrovnik. Peaceful and silent despite being in the heart of the old city this is a tiny and unexpected oasis of green within historic architecture. Still a sacred place but with a small museum of artefacts and paintings. The pharmacy dates from 1317 and is the oldest still functioning pharmacy in the Europe Photo taken from 14th-century fortress Tvrđava Minčeta located at the highest point of Dubrovnik offering panoramic city & sea views.

Species widely distributed in the savannahs of eastern and southern Africa. Only the male has the black belly and black stripe down the neck; the female is a cryptical mottled brown, an advantage in staying hidden when incubating eggs. This is an omnivorous bird, mainly feeding on beetles, grasshoppers, cockroaches, ants and other insects. The diet also includes berries, seeds and leaves. From a slide.

One advantage of being an early riser is the solitude, I often feel that I have the mountains and coastline all to myself.

The male Orthetrum coerulescens left and I kept an eye on the O. brunneum that came and went until a dog broke the perch…
He looked for other nearby ones and was there for about ten minutes, which I took advantage of to take photos trying to get enough definition in the dark area at the end of the abdomen. Already in the PC I noticed some signs on the dorsal side of the thorax that have all the appearance of wounds, produced by? I do not know too.
The spot at the end of the abdomen, seen large, looks like an irregularity in the prination but I'm not sure. I returned to the same place the next day and three days later but I didn't see him again.
