I make this image public for getting an impression of the AVIF format (can be opened in the latest IrfanView, Chrome and Firefox): Link to AVIF in Google Drive
The AVIF image compression (in the HEIF container) is a very promising format as it provides good image quality in a very small package and is (in comparison to HEIC) free of any licenses. I hope Flickr as well as Google and Microsoft products will soon have full support for this innovation.
Besides the high compression efficiency the big advantage over JPEG is that a color depth per channel of 10 and even 12 bit is supported.
This sample is generated using the avifenc.exe command line encoder for windows.
I used this parameters:
avifenc.exe --cicp 2/2/1 -r limited -y 420 -j 6 --min 30 --max 40 --minalpha 30 --maxalpha 40 in.png out.avif
The result is:
- 6 threads used (for my 6 CPU cores)
- to colorspace YUV420 (422 and 444 is not supported by the Windows AV1 extension)
- 12 bit per channel

The time came for me to take a day out of my holiday and go for a good hike. This involved a four hour drive from New Plymouth into the heartland of the north island. As the sun rose, a little way south of Te Kuiti I stopped for a short while to take in these views.

I have been blessed to photograph Cedar waxwing on several different occasions and in several different states. This is the first one I have ever seen in a cedar tree.
Taken on 09 May, 2022 at J Percy Priest Lake, Nashville TN.
I have already photographed this same spot a few years ago. Different season, different light, different skies.
My "Critters in Winter" series continues today with something more conventional (after an insect and an arachnid, equally improbable to find active at this time of year). American Robins nest and breed in the village; during May and June their wake-up calls begin around 3:30 to 4:00 a.m. Some years they linger quite late and get caught in the first winter storms. This surely must decrease their survival chances; migration is a hazardous time for them even when all goes well.
My own misgivings aside, robins and other migratory passerines have provided me with plenty of good photo ops in the late fall and first days of winter. In 2014 my neighbour, Adam, had a bumper crop of crabapples on his trees, and half a dozen species took full advantage. So did I. I especially liked the obvious colour co-ordination here, and the hoarfrost that coated all the branches and fruit.
Perhaps this fruit festival powered them southbound to their next stopping point, likely somewhere in Montana. I'll never know. But the robins keep returning each spring, so whatever they do seems to be working for them.

The advantage for me of living in a big city is that there is such a variety of people out on the street every day. Taking street portraits, brings me into a few moments of close contact to someone previously totally unknown: Every one of these meetings truly enriches my life…

I took advantage of the lovely weather on Saturday for a quick visit to the forest at Monrepos, Usually I don't go to Monrepos on weekends because there are too many people but I was lucky because it was rather quiet and in the corner of the forest where I usually take my bird and squirrel photos there were only two other photographers (instead of 15+ like on other weekends). I had a lovely time and was particularly happy that the jay had a good day and was quite cooperative.
Despite the extreme cold and poor light took advantage, when passing by, of this 'Work in Progress' elevated shot of Dyffryn Mymbyr and the Snowdon Horseshoe from the Capel Curig Pinnacles.
Previously low cloud had concealed this spectacle. I'll definitely return in better light and more favourable conditions.
My Friday Night hosting outfit is brought to you by Candy Kitten, the Savage Love Dress in the Pride print and the Naughty Girl Stockings and Boots.
Candy Kitten is awesome any time - great new releases and group gifts - but I wanted to highlight that for the next two days, Kaci has been so generous in waiving the usual group fee... which actually started about 12 hours ago, so you'll want to get instore quickly to take advantage of this amazing group.
This Brown Rat was scavenging under the bird feeders at Argaty Red Kite Centre. As this is a working farm as well as the Centre, not surprising that these would take advantage of a free food source. I did draw the line when I had them in our garden under my feeders and I'm afraid we called in Pest Control
Took advantage of a sunny bank holiday Monday for a visit to Achill Island. The weather was perfect and it made the views that bit more enjoyable. Sorry for reuploading this photo-I felt the colour temperature was wrong on the other version. #WildAtlanticWay
Common in varied wooded and forested habitats, parks, gardens, farmland with hedges and scattered trees. Forms flocks in winter; often visits garden feeders. Handsome, brightly colored male is distinctive, with bluish cowl, pink face and breast, black-and-white wing pattern (colors muted in winter). Female much drabber but shares male pattern; especially note the complex wing pattern. Both sexes have white outer tail feathers, often striking in flight such as when flushed. (eBird)

We encountered chaffinchs (another introduced species) over much of the country, but did not stop to photograph them too often since our focus was on native birds. This female, though, was in a parking area so I took advantage of the opportunity.

The mouth of the harbour provides access to the Solent. It is best known as the home of the Royal Navy, HMNB Portsmouth. Because of its strategic location on the south coast of England, protected by the natural defence of the Isle of Wight, it has since the Middle Ages been the home to England's (and later Britain's) navy. The narrow entrance, and the forts surrounding it gave it a considerable advantage of being virtually impregnable to attack from the sea. Before the fortifications were built the French burned Portsmouth in 1338. During the civil war parliamentary forces were able to carry out a successful cutting-out expedition within the harbour and capture the six-gunned Henrietta Marie.

January days in the Nicola Valley can sometimes be cold and gray. This was a perfect day to drive out to Nicola Lake and catch the swans taking advantage of the open water where the river exits.
A couple of days ago I broke a tooth, which involved an essential and expensive visit to the dentist. To take advantage of a brief escape from lockdown, while out in the car I decided to visit a tree I know, to cheer myself up. By tree, I don't mean the occasional tiny windswept hawthorn bushes which are more often found West Penwith, but a 'proper' tree - quite rare at this end of Cornwall. After enduring the few weeks of gales we've had, the oak was looking a bit lacklustre in the flat afternoon light, but still sported a few russet leaves. I added a texture for a bit of extra interest.

Taking advantage of a pleasant day for photography in sunny Somerset, 47614 and 47593 "Galloway Princess" passes an emerging maize crop at Allerford with the 1Z72 06.20 Wolverhampton-Paignton "English Riviera Statesman" charter.
Taken with the assistance of a pole and my then-new 40mm prime which was used on this occasion to extenuate the amazing panorama at this location (thanks for the endorsement Sparky).
The tracks were ice where water flows down from the hill which I took advantage of to make a lead in line. We don`t get snow very often so when it does fall here the country falls into chaos, trains planes everything pretty much comes to a standstill, down this way it is not worth investing in the heavy equipment to clear large amounts of snow.
This is the North side of Cissbury ring which was in deep shade at the time but the sun was lighting up the landscape so I had to bear in mind my exposures in the Histogramme at all times.

Took advantage of a beautiful evening and went out to the beach last night to shoot.

The best wasp pic I ever took. It was a Nikon D70 but I can't be sure of the lens because this is a crop. The opportunity to photograph these doesn't come along often, they're quite uncommon these days. One major advantage the D70 had was the ability to use flash synchronised at 400th of a second, which is extremely useful for insect photography.
Took advantage of a cold, but sunny, morning to get out for a much needed run after the rain of the last few days. Noticed this leaf on a wall - this 366 thing doesn't half make you look at the world with an eye for often ignored detail - and rather liked the way the low sun cast its shadow on the top of the wall. Nice early finish to the project for a change!

It is raining here on and off today...finally!!! I have been waiting to be stuck in the house so i can finish some ornaments and tidy up and wrap some presents!
i stayed up too late last night and then woke too early. Because it was dark and dismal out there, i think i was blessed that Bubba let me sleep in without speaking to me in his relentless cat voice for breakfast to appear in his bowl! He slept on top of me...pinning me to the bed, so i closed my eyes and slept some more. Cats, for those of you unfamiliar are usually relentless when it comes to feeding time...but they are cozy warm critters leading to a slowing of your breathing and a signal to your brain to relax...step back...slow down and take advantage of the cozy!
They do to my brain what the ocean does to my soul.
I hope you all have a wonderful weekend. I am on Roscoe and Daisy duty as my daughter and family do their version of Christmas with Russ’ family in Fredericksburg. That being said i hope to accomplish finishing my tree ornaments and wrapping some gifts! :)
…taking advantage of a good high tide there were plenty of takers at Burnham Overy Staithe in Norfolk on this day……

Arctic Tern / sterna paradisaea. Inner Farne, Northumberland. 02/07/24.
This protective adult perched on a conveniently low wooden post, keeping a close eye on its nest on the ground below.
Its mate tried to incubate their two chicks during a rain shower. Sometimes the chicks took advantage of the warmth and shelter offered, but often peeped out to see if another meal had arrived!
