The advantages of turf roofs (also called sod roofs) are many. They are very heavy, so they help to stabilize the house; they provide good insulation; and they are long-lasting.

Turf roofs in Norway are a tradition and you will see them everywhere. Roofs in Scandinavia have probably been covered with birch bark and sod since prehistory. During the Viking and Middle Ages most houses had sod roofs. In rural areas sod roofs were almost universal until the beginning of the 18th century. Tile roofs, which appeared much earlier in towns and on rural manors, gradually superseded sod roofs except in remote inland areas during the 19th century. Corrugated iron and other industrial materials also became a threat to ancient traditions. But just before extinction, the national romantics proclaimed a revival of vernacular traditions, including sod roofs. A new market was opened by the demand for mountain lodges and holiday homes. At the same time, open air museums and the preservation movement created a reservation for ancient building traditions. From these

It has always been my wish to photograph the secretive Sora head-on showing its laterally compressed body, which allows it to slip and weave easily through dense vegetation. However, seeing the Sora in the open is notoriously difficult.

I was justifiably excited when I spotted this Sora walking cautiously along the path. And when it turned and looked straight into the lens for a brief instant, the angle, light and position were just right, as seen in this picture. Luck!

I am glad that I was ready and took advantage of that opportunity.

Another advantage to dressing her up is that I get some decent poses out of her even when she is just doing regular things, waiting for the car pool. Since bending really isn't an option, she almost looks like she is posing for this shot! Plus, I can probably out run her in those heels and corset... so many camera is safe.

Ostgals (“Port end”) district west of Old Town is a collection of low rise homes. Some of them are especially old (as are the narrow cobbled streets). Once the district was inhabitted by dock workers, but today it is also liked by the local elite.

A quiet part of Ventspils, which began to form after the invitation expressed by the Russian government in 1836 and the announced advantages for the surrounding farmers to settle down in the dune belt, in order to prevent the city from becoming dusty with sand. Also it has been a village for fishermen. Nowadays, it is a unique, romantic environment with cobbled quiet streets, attractive 19th century. wooden construction and essential pelargoniums in the windows. Ostgal has been recognized as a monument of urban construction of national importance. In 2009, after a large-scale reconstruction, the city's Theater House "Jūras vārti" provides a buzz in Ostgal. Throughout the year there will be concerts, exhibitions, theater performances, celebrations and balls.

I had a day trip to Norfolk to take advantage of the fine autumn weather, hoping to see in particular, the Brown Shrike at Warham Greens and this little bird, the first Red-breasted Flycatcher I've ever seen.

The Brown Shrike had apparently gone first thing, so after 2 hours of lugging heavy 500mm f4 and tripod around the site at Warham Greens, I went to Wells Woods, just managed to get a spot in the rather pricey car park, the place was rammed with people. Opting for the lighter 500mm f5.6 to walk around and handle, I couldn't say this was a particularly confiding bird during my 3 hours vigil. But for about an hour it showed regularly in the shadows and undergrowth below our vantage point on the banked rim of The Dell, on the edge of the wood. Light degenerated rapidly into the fringe of the wood and I consider myself lucky to have got this shot on one of the occasions it popped up. Quite a soft shot, due to the ridiculously slow shutter; I dialled up the ISO after this for a faster shutter (at the risk of severe grain) but it never allowed a further opportunity.

With most shortlines generally operating on weekdays, I had to take advantage of an entire Wednesday off work yesterday. Initially I had planned to head east to Delaware on good authority that ESPN would run a blue and yellow trio out of Wilsmere, but when I punched this into the GPS I must've had a brainfart of some sort, as it began taking me west towards the MMID. By the time I noticed my mistake I was already half way to Union Bridge, so turning around would've been of a low mental standard. Instead I caught up to UBHF at Thurmont, where I was very pleasantly surprised to see a lashup of three flared 40's and a pair of oldies in tow, lined up with the 2060 facing east for the return. After a westbound chase to Highfield, I set up in Sabillasville after scoping out all the possible eastbound angles and settled for this winner. A nerve-wracking two hours later, and surely not long before the shadows consumed the ROW, the screaming dynamics of the MMID quintet could be heard roaring down the mountain, and a scene for the ages was converted into pixels.

Somebody decided a quick 'rest break' was needed........would of been rude really not to get the camera out; coat, boots and feet were already wet so I thought why not......but I did feel truly soaked cold and horrible by the time we got home!

I knew there would be advantages to not weeding the garden!

This lovely White Cow acted like a model, posing neatly and showing her beauty.

We were along, she and me, and although we couldn´t speak one each other, I think we felt well communicated and we thought the same about nature.

It was a moment of pleasure in Cerro de La Golondrina, in the nearby of Navacerrada village.

I hope you enjoy this picture and I take advantage to wish you a peaceful and healthy Wednesday!

Took advantage of a bit of sunshine to have a stroll around the garden and discovered that my new variety of Hydrangea, in a pot in a sheltered position, was coming into flower ! I couldn't believe it with all the frost, fog and generally awful weather we've been having lately but here it is looking beautiful !

This one is dedicated to my beautiful daughter Lisbeth, who gave me the Hydrangea as a present earlier in the year

One of the advantages of railfanning in Northwest Montana is that you get two cracks at autumn. A few weeks after the aspens have turned yellow and then get blown away, the tamaracks turn yellow in a final burst of color before winter arrives. On a sunny Friday afternoon, a BNSF grain train departs Belton bound for the coast.

I took advantage of the lovely weather on Saturday for a quick visit to the forest at Monrepos, Usually I don't go to Monrepos on weekends because there are too many people but I was lucky because it was rather quiet and in the corner of the forest where I usually take my bird and squirrel photos there were only two other photographers (instead of 15+ like on other weekends). I had a lovely time and was particularly happy that the jay had a good day and was quite cooperative.

I considered using "Saturday In The Park" as my title but, it seemed cliché (and too obvious).

"The kiskadee’s bold behavior and mix of foraging styles gave early naturalists fits in trying to classify it. In 1766, Linnaeus started things off by calling it a kind of shrike. In 1920, the naturalist William Henry Hudson wrote that the bird “seems to have studied to advantage the various habits of the Kestrel, Flycatcher, Kingfisher, Vulture, and fruit-eating Thrush; and when its weapons prove weak it supplements them with its cunning."

At We’re Here! we have decided to hunt out Courtyard Treasures today.

In much of California people reside in suburban settings in single-family “detached” homes, with front and back yards. Courtyards are not extremely common, although they are often seen in commercial settings. It being, Sunday I decided against trying to find office complexes where I could conduct my hunt, and went over to a large apartment development I remembered seeing near my supermarket. I found a few cozy little walled areas here and there, but I thought what this apartment dweller had done with limited space in this corner spot really stood out.

Antalya is the world-famous capital of the “Turkish Riviera”, an excellent choice for a rich and varied vacation. The main advantages of the region are developed infrastructure, proximity to the airport, active nightlife, plenty of entertainment and interesting sights.

I took advantage of some overnight rains (see previous shot in my photo stream) and did this hike just north of Shores Lake in western Arkansas. I think this was my first visit to these unnamed falls in the summer. It's only about a 6 footer.

It was during this shot that I was stung in the middle of my back by some giant flying insect. I hit the trail to the car after that.

Machu Picchu 20221127

Machu Picchu not only offers the visitor the view of the temples and stone houses that are on its cusp, but also gives a look of its terraces and irrigation systems, which give a unique personality to the Incan citadel and its surroundings.

The Functions of the Platforms

These constructions are wide steps built on the mountains’s slopes that allowed the Incas to gain land in order to develop agriculture adapted to the landscape.

Without a doubt, creating great steps meant a great effort, but without these, the constant rains, the humidity of the environment and the steepness of the area would have triggered large landslides that would have destroyed the ruins of Machu Picchu.

This terrace system fulfills three main functions:

Containment: These constructions prevented the land’s erosion from creating landslides when carrying out the construction of cities, houses and temples.

Agriculture: Through the construction of these platforms, the Incas expanded the amount of land used for agricultural activity. These terraces allowed to take advantage of the rainwater as a source of crop irrigation directly from channels that connected each of the levels. Nowadays, crops are not cultivated anymore to maintain their integrity, due to the condition of World Heritage of Machu Picchu.

Ceremonial centers: these finer and more extensive construction platforms were intended to decorate ceremonial and/or administrative centers.

Happy New Year.....

I had Monday off from work and I took advantage of the time by going down to the Ravines to check on the Eagles. Four of us were down by the Grand River waiting for this Eagle to leave the Sycamore tree and head to the nest. I almost missed the shot due to too much talking amongst the group.

First flight shot of the eagles since mid September, way to long.

Burrowing Owl

The Burrowing Owl (Athene cunicularia) is a small, long-legged owl found throughout open landscapes of North and South America. Burrowing owls can be found in grasslands, rangelands, agricultural areas, deserts, or any other open dry area with low vegetation. They nest and roost in burrows, such as those excavated by prairie dogs. Unlike most owls, burrowing owls are often active during the day, although they tend to avoid the midday heat. Like many other kinds of owls, though, burrowing owls do most of their hunting from dusk until dawn, when they can use their night vision and hearing to their advantage. Living in open grasslands as opposed to forests, the burrowing owl has developed longer legs that enable it to sprint, as well as fly, when hunting.

Burrowing owls have bright eyes; their beaks can be dark yellow or gray depending on the subspecies. They lack ear tufts and have a flattened facial disc. The owls have prominent white eyebrows and a white "chin" patch which they expand and display during certain behaviors, such as a bobbing of the head when agitated.
