Japanese gardens are traditional gardens whose designs are accompanied by Japanese aesthetics and philosophical ideas, avoid artificial ornamentation, and highlight the natural landscape. Plants and worn, aged materials are generally used by Japanese garden designers to suggest an ancient and faraway natural landscape, and to express the fragility of existence as well as time's unstoppable advance. Ancient Japanese art inspired past garden designers. By the Edo period, the Japanese garden had its own distinct appearance. 30765

One of 5 varieties of minivets in the forest we visited and a lifer!. Not the rarest, but definitely quite an uncommon one. It looks similar to the common Scarlet Minivet, but has a rosy frontside due to which it derives that name.

Similar behaviour as that of the other minivets except that it prefers small groups, usually 2 where both the male and female forage together. It is also a high canopy bird and prefers to come out to the open at the top!

ebird doesn't list the forest we visited as a native range of this bird, but since we sighted it during the non-migratory season, assume its resident there. The last trip we even sighted it nesting.

Thanks so much in advance for your views, faves and feedback.

for a sweet weekend ... TGIF !

San Francisco Square in the Historic Center of Quito.

From left to right, in the San Francisco building, you can see the doors of the Chapel of Cantuña, the Chapel of Villacísla, the main church, the convent and the museum.

The Church and its chapels (La Iglesia de San Francisco), which were considered sacred places.

Together, Church and Convent encompass three hectares including 13 cloisters (six of them major), three churches, and a large courtyard. In total, about 40,000 square meters of construction. San Francisco follows the classical typology of medieval monasteries. The main Church is the guiding axis and from there the cloister galleries extend: the refectory, the chapterhouse, and winery. These define a quadrangular courtyard, with the four respective pandas, or galleries: that of the chapter room, the refectory, the converts, and the mandatum. In addition to the basic dependencies of a convent, there were areas devoted to health care, education, crafts, a garden, and even a jail (to maintain strict discipline). The kitchen and dispensery operated in the cloister of services.

Walking from the Old Town’s narrow colonial streets into this open plaza reveals one of the finest sights in all of Ecuador: a sweeping cobblestone plaza backed by the mountainous backdrop of Volcán Pichincha, and the long, whitewashed walls and twin bell towers of Ecuador’s oldest church.

***

The Public Square (Plaza de San Francisco) was a purely urban space, demarcated and connected to various public activities (teaching, market, water supply).

Sad part of our History.

In pre-Hispanic Quito, the current lands of the Church and Convent of San Francisco were occupied by the royal palace of the Inca Huayna Cápac, before the advance of the armies commanded by the Spaniards from the south and the impossibility of defending the city the indigenous general Rumiñahui arranged the total destruction of it. In the city fire the palace was destroyed and buried under a huge amount of rubble and garbage. One of Rumiñahui's soldiers was the great-grandfather of the indigenous Cantuña, who as an eyewitness to the events had full knowledge of what was buried in the place. The construction of the church and convent of San Francisco began around 1537, just three years after the Spanish foundation of the city, with the completion of a provisional temple that was maintained until 1550, when construction of the current building began and which was completed around 1680. Although the building was officially inaugurated in 1705.

As a result of archaeological research we know that in the time of the Roman emperor Augustus, in the first century AD., Carmona went through a prolonged period of peace and economic prosperity. This led to the construction of large and important public buildings, among them the Gate of Cordoba, which was not only a defensive gate but also had a certain propaganda value, symbolizing the advance of the Roman empire.

In the Gate of Cordoba we can appreciate the traces left by the different cultures that have established themselves in our town throughout its long history.

During the time of the Catholic Monarchs, the Gate lost its original purely defensive function and, with it, its austere military appearance, as it took on the role of the supervision of products coming into Carmona from outside the town walls, in practice effectively acting as a customs post and, as a result, acquiring elements of civil architecture.

In the 16th century it underwent Renaissance alterations and, at the beginning of the 17th century, beautiful ornamental motifs, such as coats of arms and marble statues, now unfortunately lost, were added, all of which dignified the Gate.

Its Baroque appearance dates to the time of Charles II, with the reforms which took place in 1688.

At the end of the 18th century, the last reforms were carried out by the famous Neoclassical architect from Carmona, José Echamorro, and part of the monument was rebuilt and the complex consolidated

A Majestic and beautiful bird often sighted in forest areas around the country. Spotted two today, but sadly missed the flight shots of both of them in a second due to silly distractions. The bird was eyeing a prey in its style of watching from a perch. After a while it took off and disappeared.

Thanks in advance for your views / comments. Much appreciated.

day 105: describe your favorite place in the world

you walk down a gravel path and on the left side of you, there's a peaceful little creek and on the right side of you, there's a hill that leads to a plateau with fallen trees and fields of ivy. as you walk further down the gravel path, you stumble upon a bridge that allows you to cross over the creek. you walk over the bridge and you are lead to a field. there are stacks of logs off to the side and brick houses on your left. as you walk further into the field and come to the other side, you run into another creek. and on the other side of the creek, there is a railroad. and my favorite thing in the world is to just sit there and listen to the sounds of the trains. and the faint scent of smoke lets me know when the trains are near.

Start of another week and I actually got some things done before falling down the Wombo rabbit hole. This image was prompted by my having to water the outside plants, which in October, I usually don't need to do. Warm and dry and it just doesn't feel like October.

Enjoy your week and thank you in advance for your faves, comments and invitations!

It always amazes me how a subtle change of angle can change your view of a scene. I presented this tree as a colour image a week or so ago called "caught up in the complexity", but I had also taken a few shots at a different angle to emphasise the menacing movement this tree implied.
