GRAND TETONS

JUST BEFORE I WAS ABLE TO SHOOT THIS HE STOOD UP ON HIS HIND LEGS AND TWISTED VIOLENTLY INTO A HALF SPIN. IT SEEMED LIKE ODD BEHAVIOR SO I DIDN'T TRY TO GET CLOSER.

This gal is just coming into her adult coloring, as you can see from the orange at the base of her bill. The lack of additional color on her body indicates this is a female rather than a male-- young males are pretty splotchy. Glendale, Missouri

A typical teenager, sticking out his tongue as the photographer snaps his photo. I guess teenage boys are all the same no matter what species they are.

This young bull was licking gravel, guessing for the minerals. He watched me as he enjoyed his snack and did not care that I was standing about 30 yards away. He ate for about 15 minutes before wandering back into the woods.

Not sure what this birds was calling about, but it certainly called a lot, as did its sibling. They did me the favour of circling above me a few times.

I'm in the process of writing a blog on my experience in Namibia in November last year (something to keep me busy during the UK's CV19 lockdown!) and it's got me looking over images I took there. So here's a couple of an adolescent female Leopard we had the pleasure of watching in Erindi Game Reserve. Such beautiful animals...

Once a year (but be warned: according to the Balinese calendar!) young people meets and - after a very joyous body-painting - they walk through dozens of villages - where all the people is expecting them. Why? They parade, singing, shouting, playing. Addressed to the whole Universe: "This is our land! Evil Spirits away from here!"Through rice fields, forests and rivers. For hours and miles. They stop every once in a temple and pray.

"This is our land! Evil Spirits away from here!"

You would say: "folklore" - "primitivism."But better to know that in Bali, the first day of the year (again according to the Balinese calendar!) three indications are strictly complied with:

- no fire

- no walking

- no working

plus one:- Silence.

And, for 24 hours, the streets are deserted, no flights in or out!, all the families at home.

Why? There's an explanation: this is the day when the evil spirits are coming flying over the island. They see it deserted ... and they go where humans - taken from their activism - are not realizing what is happening, and let Bad Spirits enter in their villages, in their houses, in their hearts.

An example of a very powerful Bad Spirit? Greed!!!

Can you imagine something like in your country? Can you imagine the power of 24 hours of silence… 24 hours with no TV, no Internet, no cars, no work, no planes, no politicians, no advertising, no newspapers, no thieves (in every village, for some urgencies you are authorized to move, of course, but a self-organized village guards pay attention to movements from special places called Bale – a rotten-built small house you can see in every village).

Look at their faces, look at the beauty of being aware of the personal and collective responsibility to be free!To guarantee a balance between taking and giving - with the environment and among men - is the key of the Balinese spirituality in every day life. That's why they smile and look at you in the eyes every time they meet another human being.

PS: "Thank you" in Indonesian is "Terima Kasih" - they say in Dictionaries. But the true translation is: "To Give, To Receive"

As promised, I returned to the nest to see how the chicks have been progressing. It's getting a little crowded in the nest after three weeks. It's been a week since my last visit. They've grown very fast. Chicks are in the nest for almost three weeks--making the total elapsed time from egg-laying to fledging about 5-6 weeks. P.S. They left their nest the day after this shot. I hope they survive.

Shot for Dogwood 2017 Week 4 Challenge - Mirror. This years challenge is on story telling with your images. I actually shot 4 or 5 other images, but when I walked into her room yesterday, I went WOW, this would be perfect for the challenge!! Being as old as I am brings insight. It is not my room so no biggie. You want friends to come over, go to the Mall, go to the movies????? No problem, you can do that but you will need to clean your room first. So it puts the choice back to her.........how bad do you want to go, do or have friends over. BTW, that goes for her bathroom too!!

It's such a big moment when the babies make there own way in the world! I am sure this adolescent would be mortified to think her photo was made public while she had cobwebs in her whiskers!
