Red-spotted Purple butterflies are quite adept at hiding in a tree's canopy, then quickly moving when discovered. In this case, it hid so well that it could not determine I had repositioned to get the photograph. A few seconds after I took the shot, it saw me and was off.

Common to the area, but you really need to be alert to tree canopy activity and know what you are looking for to see one.

LOOKING back on my beautiful brief encounter with this male Bearded Reedling, a real reedbed specialist, it is adept at climbing reed stems, and the tail is moved constantly, in an agitated manner.

(Tyrannus dominicensis) We watched these birds for quite a while - they were adept at catching wasps, they hardly ever missed!

XVIII.

That is a typical place where we can find them. The birds are so adept at camouflage that they seamlessly merge with the dry branches. A few times, the bird was close, but I missed it and shot another bird only to realize its presence while reviewing the shots at home.

This is a migrant from Western Europe and a favorite of birders. Unlike birds which are often seen at the same habitat, this bird is unpredictable here and sightings are more luck by chance. One thing we know is that they prefer the dry trees and branches where they forage on looking for insects, termites and spiders.

Thanks in advance for your views and kind feedback.

ce chien est à mon avis plus intelligent que les autres, déjà il se fait transporter en poussette au lieu de marcher, et il est visiblement adepte comme moi de la meilleure marque d'appareil photo : Nikon

A migratory owl from Central Asia/Europe/North Asia region to India during winters. Its a well camouflaged owl that chooses its habitat adeptly. The bird prefers dry grasslands and in these grasslands chooses a place in the bush with lots of grass to rest on the ground during daytimes and is active at nights. The camouflage is so fantastic that is very easy to miss. Our guide sighted the bird from far, but then as we approached, we needed several scans to find it though it was nearby.

The bird hunts other birds, small reptiles and even raptors during the nights. Two seasons ago, there were records of this owl killing a Montagu's Harrier in a grassland we often visited. Last season, in two places I sighted several Harriers chasing this Owl during sunset. The Owl managed to escape, but then the Harriers are easy revenge. And just like other Owls, these birds are impossible to hear in flight, so the Harriers become easy target since they roost in the open during nights.

Thank you so much in advance for all your views and feedback.

The lace monitor is a member of the monitor lizard family native to eastern Australia. A large lizard, it can reach 2 metres in total length and 14 kilograms in weight. Despite its large size and mass, the lace monitor is an adept climber, hence their alternate name: Tree Goanna.

These common terrestrial and often arboreal monitors are found in eastern Australia and range from Cape Bedford on Cape York Peninsula to south-eastern South Australia. They frequent both open and closed forests and forage over long distances (up to 3 km a day).

Lace monitors are predominantly carrion eaters, feeding on already dead carcasses of other wildlife. Their diet consists of insects, reptiles, small mammals, birds, with eggs and young birds and mammals making up a larger part of their diet in spring and early summer. They also forage in areas inhabited by people, raiding chicken coops for poultry and eggs, and rummaging through unprotected domestic garbage bags and rubbish bins in picnic and recreational areas.

Lace monitors are apex predators, though dingo packs, wedge-tailed eagles, and wild boars occasionally prey upon them.

Venom glands in lace monitors have been confirmed. The venom is similar to that produced by snakes but not enough to cause serious harm. (Wikipedia)

This was a big lizard, but not 2 metres long; probably around 1-1.5 metres in length. He stayed very still on the tree hoping that we did not notice him, but of course we did. Eventually he climbed up the tree with those enormous talons and then came down headfirst to take a better look at us. I noticed that he had lost a talon some time ago, but it didn't seem to affect his climbing ability.

Piranhas have one of the strongest bites found in bony fishes. Relative to body mass, the black piranha (Serrasalmus rhombeus) produces one of the most forceful bites measured in vertebrates. This extremely powerful bite is generated by large jaw muscles (adductor mandibulae) that are attached closely to the tip of the jaw, conferring the piranha with a mechanical advantage that favors force production over bite speed. Strong jaws combined with finely serrated teeth make them adept at tearing flesh.

Before and After

This adept flyer looks like an adult but it’s a Burrowing Owl chick. I’ve been spending a lot of time at the nests and the chicks act like youngsters at the nest, making me think they were only capable of short flights. Today, one that had gotten up on one of the nest posts, suddenly flew into the air after a bug. He missed the bug but gave me that hard banking turn on the way back to the nest. No slouch in the flying department. (Athene cunicularia) (Sony a1, 400mm f/2.8 at f/5, 1/3200, ISO 640)

The Swallow-tailed Kite is perhaps the most adept and acrobatic flier of all the raptors.

In some nests two eggs are laid, but the first chick that hatches kills the younger chick. Ornithologists refer to this as obligate siblicide.

These goats climb Argan trees in search for food. Argan berries are about the best food a Tamri goat could imagine, and to reach the fruit requires them to be adept in an extraordinary balancing act that’s quite unexpected from a hoofed animal.

Over time, the goats seem to have mastered this acrobatic skill, traipsing sure-footed on the narrow branches of the Argan trees.

However, this amazing show isn’t all that’s remarkable about these goats. After digesting the berries, the goats leave behind droppings that contain large kernels of the seeds they consume. These kernels are extracted from the manure, washed , ground pressed to produce argan oil.

Argan oil is an exotic health oil mainly used for culinary and cosmetic purposes.

You'd think a stinging bee would be avoided by hungry birds, but apparently not. They probably are adept in making sure the stinging abdomen is held outside the mouth area like this cardinal is demonstrating.

Or maybe they make sure it is dead and not stinging before they ingest it?

I have a feeling this male was courting a female that was flying around the area at the time. He spent a good two minutes sitting on this branch and it seemed he had no intention of eating the bee himself. Probably part of their courting/mating ritual where the male offers food to the female as evidence of his undying love :)

It sure worked out for me since I had a full two minutes to capture great images, as opposed to the three seconds that I'm used to from these beautiful red birds!

The bee is best seen when the image is enlarged...

Wyalusing State Park, Wisconsin

An interesting bird that is very adept at nest parasitism. It is well documented that many songbird populations have declined, at least locally, due to this behavior. A well documented example is the Kirtland's Warbler, a previously endangered species (it's now Near Threatened) that has had significant increase in recruitment following interventions that decreased Cowbird populations that threatened this warbler. Nonetheless I've always considered the Cowbird to be a handsome species and one I enjoy photographing.

A medium sized bird of prey found in a very small range in India, but more common in South East Asia. This is a beautiful bird found in the forests of the Western Coasts. The bird is resident in the region and primarily subsists on fish. Its an adept hunter much like the Osprey.

There are two types of Fish eagles in India, the Grey Headed and the Lesser Fish Eagle. Both look similar, except for few minor differences. Both birds have similar hunting patterns, though the habitats are a bit different. The Lesser Fish Eagle is usually found in riverine habitats in the forests, while the Grey headed is found in lakes and waterbodies in the forests.

We sighted this on the Kali River and spent almost 2+ hours watching it. It was noon time when the bird made its appearance and landed on its favourite perch for fishing. This male made several false dives and returned to the perch immediately. An expert nearby remarked that the fish must have disappeared into the waters and hence the bird came back. After a while, we had to leave the place, but the bird was still on the same perch.

Thanks so much in advance for your views, feedback and faves.

The Canada goose (Branta canadensis) is a large wild goose with a black head and neck, white cheeks, white under its chin, and a brown body. It is native to arctic and temperate regions of North America, and its migration occasionally reaches northern Europe [...]. Like most geese, the Canada goose is primarily herbivorous and normally migratory; it tends to be found on or close to fresh water.

Extremely adept at living in human-altered areas, Canada geese have established breeding colonies in urban and cultivated habitats, which provide food and few natural predators. The success of this common park species has led to its often being considered a pest species [...]. Wikipedia

Steenbok (Raphicerus campestri), a common small antelope of southern and eastern Africa sometimes known as the steinbuck or steinbok. They are small (16-24" at the shoulder) and browse on low level vegetation but are also adept at scraping up roots and tubers. They are almost entirely independent of drinking water, gaining the moisture they need from their food.

Almost identical to the more familiar Cat and Mouse version, Star is adept at both having brought in frequent offerings over the years, very rarely killing them, but bringing them inside and releasing them...sending me scurrying like a crazy person in pursuit while she sits carefully cleaning her paws. I really had no idea of the variety of rodent species surrounding us until the cat enlightened me. Actually they're all pretty cute and, in fact, one has spent the entire winter scampering about providing Star recreational activities while housebound. I long ago gave up thoughts of trying to catch it and I'm sure it will find it's way out as the doors are opened more regularly soon.

As for our avian friends, just a few days ago I left the door cracked to allow Star to get out on a relatively nice day, went on a walk, and returned to find her sitting calmly watching a chickadee not so calmly flying around unhappily from window to window in the house. I easily caught it, calmed it, and it flew gratefully away. While never very interested in the larger birds (probably for good reason as she is just over 5 pounds), she is keenly alert when smaller species arrive and I have been amazed at her "birding" abilities and the gentleness with which she handles them. While "mistakes" have been made on rare occasion with mice, never has she damaged a bird.

The junco here seems comfortable behind the glass in (yes, friends) our latest snow, but is one of the species on Star's "got 'em" list.

This Green Heron is my fair weather friend, as he leaves in September for the warmer climates and returns around mid April to begin its summer breeding season. Green herons fly at night while migrating. As they feed both during the day and during twilight hours, they seem adept in low light conditions. This bird became quite accustomed to my presence last summer and on his first day back, today, he once again tolerated my presence within a range that previously would not have been possible. It's quite obviously the same bird and has returned to its exact same 'summer place'.

The chicks are very adept at maneuvering in the air and are gone most of the day now, presumably out trying to hunt on their own.
