I am deeply concerned by the Climate Crisis, and feel an inherent conflict in working with textiles while knowing that the textile industry is the second largest polluter in the world. I aim to make long lasting and biodegradable artworks that will be valued throughout their lifetimes. Intentionally contrasting with the waste and harm created by the textile industry, my practice hopes to raise awareness to this harm. This takes form by using locally sourced materials and textile processes of hand spinning, weaving, knitting, and plant dyeing.
Nature Unravelling is a series of nine knitted-lace wall hangings that explore the interconnections between our use of textiles and the Climate Crisis. I spin waste wool into yarn to then dye with plants that I forage and grow. To avoid contributing to widespread panic surrounding the Climate Crisis, these works are intentionally soft and beautiful, while gently referencing textile pollution, consumption, and eco-paralysis.
