Metelkova is one of the weirdest places to see in Ljubljana, Slovenia’s capital. Formerly, the site was the Slovenian headquarter of the Yugoslav National Army. The buildings have been squatted since September 1993 in a declared illegal way, mainly by artists, activists and young students. In 2005, Metelkova was declared a national cultural heritage site and the European Cultural Fund attributes financial support. If you like graffiti, weird art, and quirky sculptures then this is the place to head to.

Parliament Square, London

1st September, 2020

Everyone to the bus shelters

Rouen (France) - Saturday March 11, 2023, during the demonstration against the pension reform, young PCF activists were very active. To get noticed by the media covering the event, they systematically climbed onto the roofs of bus shelters waving their flags. When the head of the procession, where most of the journalists are, had passed, they ran towards another bus shelter. These young activists seem to have taken courses in communication. In my day, they just handed out leaflets. In any case, it was effective, they did not go unnoticed.

Thanks for taking time to fave, comment and look at my work. I really appreciate.

These three bears, once masters of this icy environment, no longer recognize their territory. The shrinking sea ice has reduced their opportunities to hunt seals, their main food source. These changes are forcing them to adopt new survival strategies, such as resting more to conserve energy. However, even these efforts are not enough to compensate for the daily caloric loss they suffer.

In the face of these challenges, the bears seem to symbolize a silent but powerful call for the protection of their habitat. Their daily struggle draws attention to the devastating effects of climate change not only on biodiversity but also on humanity itself. Scientists and environmental organizations use the iconic image of polar bears to raise awareness and encourage concrete action against global warming.

In this way, these three polar bears are reluctant activists for a greater cause. Their struggle to survive in a rapidly changing world is a poignant reminder of the urgent need to act to preserve our planet and its vulnerable inhabitants.

“On the evening of May 4, 1886, a tragedy of international significance unfolded in Chicago’s Haymarket produce district. An outdoor meeting had been hastily organized by anarchist activists to protest the violent death of workers during a labor lockout the previous day in another area of the city.

Spectators gathered in the street as speakers addressed political, social and labor issues from atop a freight wagon from the adjacent factory. When approximately 175 policemen approached with an order to disperse the meeting, a dynamite bomb was thrown into their ranks.

The identity and affiliation of the person who threw the bomb have never been determined; this anonymous act had many victims. From the blast and panic that followed, seven policemen and at least four civilian bystanders lost their lives, but the victims of the incident were not limited to those who died as a direct result of the bombing. In the aftermath, those who organized and spoke at the meeting – and others who held unpopular political viewpoints – were arrested, unfairly tried and, in some cases, sentenced to death even though none could be tied to the bombing itself.

Meeting organizers George Engel and Adolf Fisher along with speakers August Spies and Albert Parsons were put to death by hanging. Activist Louis Lingg died violently in jail prior to his scheduled execution. Meeting speaker Samuel Fielden, and activists Oscar Neebe and Michael Schwab were sentenced to prison, but later pardoned in 1893 bu Illinois Governor John Peter Altgeld, citing the injustices of their trial.

Over the years, the site of the Haymarket bombing has become a powerful symbol for a diverse cross-section of people, ideals and movements. Its significance touches on the issues of free speech, the right of public assembly, organized labor, the fight for the eight hour work day, law enforcement, justice, anarchy and the right of every human being to pursue an equitable and prosperous life. For all, it is a poignant lesson in the rewards and consequences inherent in such human pursuits..”

4th May 2015 - A quick shot from Pier Head of the old Bank of England building.

For over a week now the “Love Activists” squatting group has been occupying the Bank of England building on Castle Street in the centre of Liverpool. They have opened the old bank as a space for the homeless with kitchen, sleeping space etc. They are expecting eviction, and recently (29 April) large numbers of police arrived at the building in what looked set to be an attack on the squat. However, after harassing people outside and issuing a dispersal order, most of the cops left. Up to now, the building remains occupied. For more information and updates see the occupiers’ facebook page. Below we repost a statement of demands from the group, via squat.net.

We make this document a Statement of Intent regarding the old Bank of England building on Castle Street, Liverpool. The intentions are as follows to feed, cloth and help all those who seek it and for the local community to help resource this project.

We intend to use this building for the community, to inspire a feeling of community, which is lacking.

We do this in direct response to a local council and government who are lacking in their efforts to help those in need and in fact, the local Council and government seem intent on making matters worse for the people by putting more and more austerity measures in place.

We wish by the direct action of occupying an empty unused building and using said building to provide certain needs for the street people or for that matter anyone else who needs to use what is provided by donations, which come from the local community.

We intend to live in peace and harmony with our local community and will resolve any issues which are brought to our attention.

@Love Activists (Liverpool) former Bank of England.

Our demands are as follows:

1. We demand Mayor Joe Anderson meets with us before the end of this week

2. We demand the Merseyside Labour councils and Joe Anderson Mayor rejects the cuts and says no to austerity and no to the cuts. We are suffering ‘Enuf is Enuf’ – we and they need sanctuary.

3. We demand all of the homeless we have been supporting, helping to provide a sense of worth and belonging are re-housed immediately.

4. We demand Social Services and Mental Health Services undertake rapid assessments of those we are supporting, they are very vulnerable.

5. We have learned the drug and alcohol rehabilitation services are underfunded and unsupported, with long waiting lists, cuts to funding. These services must be well resourced and protected. We say no to privatisation.

6. The voices of the homeless must be heard and their requests must be actioned and they must be treated as equals.

7. We have also learned that the Homeless Provision in Merseyside is at breaking point, we have been working with the Whitechapel Centre in particular and will continue with that positive relationship.

8. We demand that the first step to recovery for those with addition issues is a roof over their heads, this is a priority over their recovery.

9. We would also like to thank the community and businesses of Liverpool and further afield for their generous support in solidarity of our direct action to occupy the Bank of England – we have only got this far with that support.

10. We continue to peacefully resist our removal from the Occupied Bank until our demands are met in full.

In peace and solidarity @Love Activists (Liverpool)

A labor activist went back to the protest area in Mendiola after picking a flag tossed in the barricades of barbed wires placed by the PNP and the Malacañang Police during the May 1 Labor Day Rally. According to labor analysts, the Philippine labor movement has weakened considerably and its militancy has softened. This trend isn’t likely to change in the coming years unless there’s a major economic policy shift.

Arefa is taking a gap year. Her mother said to her during her year off it was time to learn to cook. Her Dad said to mum " leave her alone she is very busy been an activist".

Arefa has recently returned from Sydney where she attended the Action Lab.

Arefa lives in Waikerie and came to Australia when she was 14 with her family. When she arrived she couldn't speak english so the internet became her life line as she found an online community that spoke her language.

Up until year 11 Arefa didnt have any Aussie friends, when she moved to Adelaide she was forced to make new friends and learn more about the Aussie culture and language and she said "that it wasn't hard as it seems". As soon as she got involved with Vision Generation it all came together very fast. She belives this is because she gained alot of self confidence as she became more comfortable in her own skin.

Arefa is very passionate about making a difference. Her goal is to become the Youth Representitive for the United Nations in Australia.

[Steve May_The Activist (Van T Rudd)_2018_(Salon des Refusés)_IMG_6286]

This brave woman was one of several people arrested in Trafalgar Square for daring to peacefully resist the government's inaction on the climate and cost of living crisis. She had been participating in a "Just Stop Oil" demo, by sitting on the road, on the south side of the square and had been holding a placard declaring "We will not pay for greed."

Another activist explained his own interpretation of the placard - "We refuse to go hungry to feed your profits, we refuse to sacrifice our planet on the altar of greed."

This and other similar protests occur as a tiny corporate minority are profiteering from the surge in the oil price, inflicting misery on working families, and while also benefiting the government's backing for new oil fields.

The UK's mainstream TV network Sky News network reported in August 2022 that "the country has seen a huge spike in the number of people becoming billionaires." - Yes, that's right, a "huge spike" in the middle of the UK's longest decline in working families' living standards in 200 years.

news.sky.com/story/sunday-times-rich-list-2022-uk-has-a-r...

The UK government claims that it doesn't have enough funds to support the NHS, the disabled, the homeless or working families who can't afford to heat their homes. It also explains its inability to take any of the steps desperately needed to avert catastrophic climate change, due to the supposed cost.

All the while it allows UK oil companies to profit from the Ukraine War by setting the maximum possible market price thereby plunging ordinary families into poverty. It also continues to allow individuals and corporations to hide their wealth in tax havens, hands out billions by propping up, via the Bank of England's open market operations, the assets of wealthy bond holders and it still privileges multinationals with the lowest corporation tax, by a significant margin, in the G7, and also in the G20.

According to the Just Stop Oil website, just a few days prior to when this photo was taken, a spokesperson for the activist group set out their demands -

“Rishi Sunak is about to U-turn on attending COP27. We demand that he also U-turn on new oil and gas. This genocidal policy will kill millions of people, while failing to address the worst cost of living crisis this country has ever seen.

“It's time for a serious windfall tax on big oil, without the get-out-of-jail-free tax credits that will encourage more oil and gas that we cannot afford. Vulnerable people will be freezing to death in their homes this winter, unable to afford a can of soup, while his government refuses to tax the rich and the big energy companies that are profiting from our misery.

“We owe it to our young people to stop fossil fuels, we owe it to our workers to create a just transition to a zero-carbon economy, we owe it to our old people to enable them to live with dignity. We are not prepared to stand by and watch while everything we love is destroyed."
