“Reaching Sadness” doesn’t necessarily feel sad when you look at it. Actually, it looks kind of crazed and frantic. I think many artists would have taken a brush full of paint and simplified the whole composition into something more soothing.

But soothing is not how I process sadness. Not at all. That is someone else’s painting. For me, my paintings are where everything lands. I have a brain that pings off the confines of my skull when I can’t escape something that is true. And there is nothing more true than that the beings you love will leave you.

There were moments when this piece was beautiful, organized, calm, and accepting. You can see it in the deep, dark areas. And then I ran off and got busy taking care of everything that had to be done.

Maybe someday, if this piece is still with me, I will take that brush full of paint and calm it down. But that is not now. And this piece is me on sadness.

Despite having been commercialized in the late 1930's Acrylic Plastic, Poly(methyl methacrylate), was all the rage in the late fifties and early sixties. Remember "The Graduate?" I made these 2 pieces in a seventh grade shop class in 1959. I was pretty hard pressed to come up with something I made myself for this weeks Macro Mondays challenge. Most of my creations are intellectual property or large scale things made out of steel, copper and concrete. Both are hard to do in macro scale. So I went way back to these early efforts.

Area shown is about 60mm wide.

Happy Macro Monday!

Last week when I arrived in Yellowstone this was the first place I went... This little thermal pool is often overlooked because there is no sign to point you there. Also, parking is limited. I found this pool many years ago and have been shooting it each time I visit the park. Hope you all have a great day and a wonderful week.
