We are experiencing a particularly hot summer this year. No wonder this Elkhorn Fern's outer fronds are dried and discolored.

Elkhorn ferns (also called Staghorn ferns) are ‘epiphyte’, meaning that they grow on tree branches and trunks naturally. They can grow fairly large, although they require at least 10 years to achieve their maximum size.

These plants make two types of fronds. The shield, or sterile fronds, wrap around the tree or rock on which the plant is growing. These shields usually form a basket which collects debris, providing a medium for root growth, and aiding in moisture collection and retention. The fertile, or normal fronds, grow out from the bud, and the spores are borne on these. Some species make fertile fronds much like the antler of a deer. Others are nearly round, or wedge shaped.

RKO_3803. How extraordinary is it to watch these beautiful and colorful little birds doing their diving act!

This male Common Kingfisher achieved its goal and had a wonderful, though relatively small, meal!

It was a challenge (and objective) to get some nice shots of the diving Kingfisher and I guess I too achieved my objectives.

This image of the center of a chicory flower reminded me of some of the graphics I've seen of a nuclear fusion reactor, like this one:

I'm not referring to my favorite childhood TV show about a crime-fighting rancher with a plane. While "Sky King" was a beloved icon for many in the 1950's, especially in the aviation community, that's not the King I'm talking about.

I'm talking about the Peregrine Falcon, the fastest animal on Earth. These incredible birds typically cruise at 25-34 mph, but when they execute their hunting dive, known as a "stoop," they can exceed 200 mph—even reaching speeds of 240 mph! To achieve this breathtaking velocity, they tuck their wings and streamline their bodies. They even have specialized cones in their nostrils to protect their lungs from the intense forces at such high speeds.

The Expiatory Church of the Sagrada Familia, known simply as the Sagrada Familia, is a Roman Catholic basilica in Barcelona, Spain, designed by architect Antoni Gaudí. Begun in 1882, it is still under construction (November 2016). It is Gaudí's masterpiece and the greatest exponent of Catalan modernist architecture.

The Sagrada Familia is a reflection of Gaudí's artistic plenitude: he worked on it for most of his professional career, but especially in his later years, where he reached the culmination of his naturalistic style, synthesizing all the solutions and styles he had tried up to that point. Gaudí achieved perfect harmony in the interrelationship between structural and ornamental elements, between plasticity and aesthetics, between function and form, between content and container, achieving the integration of all the arts into a structured and logical whole. The Sagrada Familia has a Latin cross plan, five central naves, a three-aisled transept, and an apse with seven chapels. It boasts three façades dedicated to the Birth, Passion, and Glory of Jesus. When completed, it will have 18 towers: four at each portal, making a total of twelve for the apostles, four over the transept invoking the evangelists, one over the apse dedicated to the Virgin, and the central dome tower in honor of Jesus, which will reach 172.5 meters in height. The temple will have two sacristies next to the apse and three large chapels: the Assumption Chapel in the apse and the Baptism and Penance Chapels next to the main façade. It will also be surrounded by a cloister designed for processions and to isolate the temple from the exterior. Gaudí applied a highly symbolic content to the Sagrada Familia, both in architecture and sculpture, dedicating each part of the temple to a religious significance.

Autumn is in the air, in the trees, and on my mind. And like others, in their cameras by now. Trout Lake is only about 20 minutes away and unveils itself in different ways depending on the season. With the sun now lower in the sky, and winds barely present, the mirror-like surface can provide terrific reflections.

Fall colors also present themselves for view, while Lillie Pads suddenly appear. The shadow that split the scene nicely framed the two distinctly different elements. This too created depth and a polarizing filter both removed glare, and released those vivid colors.

In order to get this shot, it was necessary to prop up against a Birch tree that was leaning about 45 degrees toward the lake. There was nowhere to place my tripod and achieve the same shot, short of submersing it and settling for something different. For me, that is just not an option; be nice to your equipment.

Back to my Pentax.. From the beginning of the year I never managed to use my reflex except from some garden and out of the field nearby pictures now and then so I presume that iphonoeography will wait for a long time from now on couse I also do 2 weeks - from the 14th of July - of vacation in Sweden and hopefully I'll have lot of pentax pictures from there :d ). This is not exactly what I would like to post, it's pretty maybe but not a great picture IMMO (that foreground leaf do an awfully work distracting the main subject). I need something new a new place a new feeling and I really hope to achieve it in Sweden. So for some days normal pictures then vacation then we will see :D

As it was the period of light rains over the Equator, it rained every day during our trip to Kenya. It was nice for us and for the animals. But sometimes the grass was a little too much tall to be able to achieve full frame portraits. Nonetheless, I preferred to forget these selfish necessities and rather feel that the animals were happy with this regenerating rain.

Such a deep color of orange! Reminds me so much of autumn, doesn't you?! I must be getting in the mood for fall and all its colors! ha! Such a beautiful rose, near perfect, wouldn't you say?! I thought so. I thought so, so much, that I felt sure I must've posted it already; but in checking through, I didn't see it! Hope you all enjoy!

Before migration begins I have made a mental list of and plan for warbler images I'd like to achieve. Many of my ideas come from viewing images from my flickr friends. This was one of those.

I spent just a few brief minutes with this bird but they were memorable.

60x90cm watercolour on medium density fiberboard, 2020.

My precious, dear friends, I cordially and with great love, with infinite gratitude, congratulate you on a new stage in our lives — and may the coming year be joyful and the happiest! May the wings of your dreams never fall, no matter what happens! May joy flow from your radiant, kind eyes! May the sky above your homes remain peaceful and cloudless! Let's spend the past year and greet the coming one with a smile and a sinking heart. May he bring to each of us what we have long dreamed of. May he be generous with joy, fun and positive events. The most important thing is that everyone is healthy and full of energy to achieve their goals and aspirations! Let's drink to that and wish each other a Happy New Year! Hurray!

Whenever you want to achieve something, keep your eyes open, concentrate and make sure you know exactly what it is you want. No one can hit their target with their eyes closed.

It is surprising what one can do with a pancake lens. It is designed as an all-rounder and that means that compromises have been made. And yet, one can get close to the object and even at its widest aperture will achieve good focus. This image has been slightly cropped though. Dandelions in spring.

This was taken just yesterday, definitely in the midst of winter. Strangely enough, though, this happens every year--the last of autumn's rustic leaves and several inches of snow on the ground! Really quite a funny sight, I think. What I thought was really pretty, though, was the fog. You can just barely see the fog through the trees in the background, but still pretty, just the same!

This is actually our property. We're close enough to town to enjoy the shopping and restaurants of big city life; yet we're out in the country enough to enjoy a little bit of property, including trees and forest life! I love it!

Hope you all enjoy!

I just love a great reflection and doesn't matter from water or ice or mirror or windows... I always seek for these opportunities. So much so that I forgot to even capture ducks close by. So taken by the movements and colours. This was not achieved by intentional movement of my camera but by nature's water movement.

The Thurisaz rune (ᚦ) represents the ability to confront obstacles, the strength to endure adversity, and the protection of mighty forces. Like the thorn it symbolizes, this rune reminds you that true strength lies not just in attack, but in defense and resilience. It suggests that you have the inner fortitude to face any challenge that stands in your way, urging you to stand firm and embrace your power.

Thurisaz is a rune of both conflict and transformation, showing that through struggle, growth is achieved. It calls on you to harness your inner strength wisely, channeling your energy to break through barriers and drive positive change. More than just a force of destruction, Thurisaz is a guardian—its presence in your path signifies that you are not alone, as unseen forces shield and guide you. Whether in battle, personal trials, or major life transitions, this rune is a reminder that your resilience is your greatest weapon, and through perseverance, victory is within reach.

"Thurisaz is the force that breaks and the strength that endures—embrace the storm, for it forges the warrior within."

Elder Futhark II

Declared a National Monument in 1931, its promoter was Juan Vázquez de Molina, nephew of the very powerful secretary for Castilian affairs, Francisco de los Cobos. He succeeded his uncle in the position of Secretary of State for the monarchs Charles V and Philip II. The palace was built in the mid-sixteenth century by the Renaissance architect Andrés de Vandelvira. The local stonemasons Miguel Calvyde, Antón Sánchez, Alonso Fernández and the grille Francisco López participated in its construction. It is strange that an architect gives the same importance to a construction of a civil nature as to one of a religious nature. With the construction of this palace, Andrés de Vandelvira made his culminating work in civil architecture, representing the maturity of the artist. The plan and elevation of the façade is influenced by the model of the "Roman house" of the Latin edition of Vitruvius published by Fra Giocondo of Verona in 1511. It is one of the most beautiful Renaissance palaces in Spain and one of the ones that best follows the principle of eurythmy proposed by the Roman architect, who advocates the good arrangement of the different parts of a building in terms of proportion, harmony and symmetry. The façades are arranged horizontally in three bodies, with different architectural orders, Corinthian for the first, Ionic for the second and in the last, caryatids together with telamones, as tenants bearing the coats of arms of the Molina, Mendoza, Vázquez, Cobos, Manuel and Quiñones. It is curious that on the façade he inverts the usual order of Doric, Ionic and Corinthian. In addition, he uses the large human figure in the last body, believed to have been influenced by the French-born sculptor Esteban Jamete, possibly carved by him. Vertically it divides into seven streets of different widths barely perceptible to achieve an appearance of solidity. The openings are different in the three bodies: windows with wrought iron and festoons in the first, balconies with triangular pediment in the second and in the third oval portholes, influenced by Machuca and his Palace of Charles V. A cantilevered cornice finishes off the building and, at the corners, there are two turrets that are believed to have been added to act as a counterweight, which gives it a very elegant character. Here Vandelvira was inspired by the classical temples of isolated columns crowned by small domes – tholoi.

Un filtre GND de 2 stops n'était pas vraiment suffisant, alors j'ai superposé un deuxième, toujours de 2 stops (un medium et un hard pour être précis).

J'adore le résultat et le peu de postproduction à réaliser pour y arriver ! Merci Lee Filters !

True happiness comes from a sense of inner peace and contentment, which in turn must be achieved through the cultivation of altruism, of love and compassion and elimination of ignorance, selfishness and greed.

Happy Monday! It’s clear that Corgis make me very happy. Hydrangeas also bring a smile … that purple lushness in the garden is hard to beat! So, in terms of joy bringing, in this photo, one of these things is not like the other. Or isn’t it?

I thought I’d give this chartreuse hair dye a whirl. And you know, I dig it. I mean, hugely because this is all temporary, and you can bet I’ll be brunette again tomorrow. And we all know the biggest perk of all with changing up our hair color to match our flower gardens in SL is that there is no damage from the whole process. No sitting anxiously in a chair at the salon, praying we aren’t going to regret our decision to go green. In the good ol’ online realms, this can all be achieved and then immediately reversed with no bleach, no dyes, no breakage.

You can even swim in a pixel chlorinated pool without your highlights taking on a horrid murky green hue. Yes, we all know this happens when we add a few streaks of blond to our dark manes in RL!

I hope everyone’s week is off to a fantastic start, and that you all have extra good hair days. And yep … I’ll be staying brunette in the real world, oh … forever!

Sending love 💕❤️

I took a photo of this Dahlia bloom, that I cut from the garden, each day as it gradually open up.

I then overlayed a number of photos on top of each other to achieve this effect.

I then overlaid a photograph of a fern overhanging a waterfall which I had 'coloured' gold.

With the rumours of the potential demise of Flickr I have been giving some thought to where I might find another place like it ... and I don't have a good answer.

Flickr has been (and hopefully will remain) a place to share and to be inspired unlike any other place I have encountered in 'cyber-space.' Although I have been critical of many of the changes that have been made to the site over the years (and complementary to other changes) I have remained a steadfast participant on an almost daily basis for close to 10 years now. Why? It's simple really ... because of the people I have 'met' here. Many good and some great photographers yes .... but much more importantly many good and some truly great people who ... although we will likely never meet face-to-face ... have been an almost daily part of my life in a small but important way. Flickr managed somehow to successfully mimic a true community and achieved just about the right mix of intensity and casualness of interaction that allows a truly international and marvelously varied group of individuals with a common interest to connect in a very human and supportive way!

To all my Flickr friends (you know who you are) ... without Flickr as a connector we are in real danger of 'losing touch.' I promise I am not a sentimental (old) fool ... I might be rightly accused of being old but I doubt I have ever been tagged as 'sentimental.' I have thoroughly enjoyed our sometimes daily, sometimes weekly, and sometimes less often 'meetings' over the years and don't want to see it gone. The solution escapes me for the moment ... suggestions?

Please feel free to share this 'question' that I pose ... no doubt in the vast number of connections that we have collectively made there is someone with a bright idea. I hope the discussion goes viral and in-so-doing Flickr gets recognized as a worthy 'meeting place' that can be sustained and maybe even made profitable?

P.S. I don't think Facebook is the answer. :)

2nd piece I entered for it.

I played with different programme, the lines coming down the paper symbolise an incoming storm, took me ages to find the right filter to achieve that.

As you know by now, I love when artists use music to tell a story, weaving the music and the lyrics into a tale filled with emotion and colours. Don McLean is one of those Artists who masterfully achieve this. Vincent is an Ode to the dutch painter Vincent Van Gogh (1853 - 1890). He struggled with mental illness all through his life and died at his own hands at the age of just 37. During his life, he barely sold any of his paintings. Which makes the fact that these days they are worth millions kind of a cruel joke. Don McLean weaved numerous paintings of VanGogh into his Lyrics, which is another nice touch

Vincent - Don McLean

Starry, starry night

Paint your palette blue and gray

Look out on a summer's day

With eyes that know the darkness in my soul

Shadows on the hills

Sketch the trees and the daffodils

Catch the breeze and the winter chills

In colors on the snowy, linen land

Now, I understand what you tried to say to me

And how you suffered for your sanity

And how you tried to set them free

They would not listen, they did not know how

Perhaps they'll listen now

Starry, starry night

Flaming flowers that brightly blaze

Swirling clouds in violet haze

Reflect in Vincent's eyes of china blue

Colors changing hue

Morning fields of amber grain

Weathered faces lined in pain

Are soothed beneath the artist's loving hand

Now, I understand, what you tried to say to me

How you suffered for your sanity

How you tried to set them free

They would not listen, they did not know how

Perhaps they'll listen now

For they could not love you

But still your love was true

And when no hope was left inside

On that starry, starry night

You took your life as lovers often do

But I could have told you, Vincent

This world was never meant for one

As beautiful as you

Starry, starry night

Portraits hung in empty halls

Frameless heads on nameless walls

With eyes that watch the world and can't forget

Like the strangers that you've met

The ragged men in ragged clothes

The silver thorn of bloody rose

Lie crushed and broken on the virgin snow

Now, I think I know what you tried to say to me

How you suffered for your sanity

How you tried to set them free

They would not listen, they're not listening still

Perhaps they never will

The bridge was designed by Chris Wilkinson of the architectural practice of Wilkinson Eyre. They describe the Arch as follows: "The design achieves visual complexity from geometric simplicity. The 25m high arch is parabolic in form, its trapezoidal section tapering in opposite directions in both plan and elevation. Two sets of cable stays are arranged to interlock and overlap, fanning out in opposite directions to create a set of planes which twist and change as the driver passes below."

The construction of the bridge formed part of the regeneration of the Hulme district of Manchester, both by re-establishing the former route of Stretford Road, which had been cut into two halves by the construction of Princess Road in 1969, and by providing a local landmark. It was opened on 10 May 1997 by Alex Ferguson.

Since their founding, the Marble Sisters had only one task: to watch the archives. They spent every day caring for the scrolls; returning borrowed texts, replacing fragments too torn or faded to understand, and, every once in a while, creating new manuscripts to join the ranks of the endless rows in their vast library. Although the sisters were able to achieve great knowledge and wisdom thanks to the scrolls, they received a curse as well: a hunger, a never-ceasing addiction for more knowledge. This drove most of the sisters to madness, however, those who managed to control their urge gained more than anyone could possibly imagine...

Built for Brickscalibur in the 12x12 vignette category.

I decided to build this as my entry for the 12x12 category after I was inspired by some concept art for the wheel of time Amazon show. I figured I'd venture beyond libraries and books and take my chances with some scrolls instead. Let me know what you think!

Feedback is always appreciated,

Happy Building!

On one of our outtings earlier this year, Jannie was encouraged to "go find a stick" in the nearby woods. This is what he found...

Taken in April 2007.

These lunch walks...Etty says it below so well...it takes time to absorb the wonder that surrounds us. The camera makes me look at the detail in the ordinary. In the ordinary is the HOLY. I feel so blessed...

“Slowly but surely I have been soaking Rilke up these last few months: the man, his work and his life. And that is probably the only right way with literature, with study, with people or with anything else: to let it all soak in, to let it all mature slowly inside you until it has become a part of yourself. That, too, is a growing process. Everything is a growing process. And in between, emotions and sensations that strike you like lightning. But still the most important thing is the organic process of growing.”

― Etty Hillesum, An Interrupted Life: The Diaries, 1941-1943; and Letters from Westerbork

“One must marry one's feelings to one's beliefs and ideas. That is probably the only way to achieve a measure of harmony in one's life.”
