The most common problem you will have with a motor is the capacitor. When you turn the motor on and you hear it humming/struggling to turn, the capacitor is most likely bad. With a testing device, you can test the capacitor to see if it's good or bad. A 65 mf capacitor will cost you about $30.

Engineers often misdiagnose the problem and recommend replacing the motor not realizing that the capacitor or limit switches or loop detectors could be bad.

Ah, the joys of access control. It's a system we've got spread across my workplace, and it's increasingly common in many workplaces.

As the name suggests, they're about controlling access, and in truth a standard lock and key counts as part of access control, but when we speak of it we normally mean electronic systems.

Doors are held shut by powerful electromagnets and are released either by entering a code or more usually by presenting an RFID tag which can come in many forms. In the good old days there were solenoid operated sprung pins that fired a bolt from the frame into the door. Sadly they failed 'secure', i.e. locked in the event of power failure, rather than failing 'safe', i.e. unlocked, and so Fire Officers most likely declared them verboten.

Fire regs give us other problems too. Access control systems are great at keeping people out, but less good at keeping people in. At most access controlled doors you need a 'break glass' like this one to allow the door to be opened to access fire exits. That makes them rather less useful in schools when you're trying to control student movement.

The yellow bar at the top of this switch indicates that it has been activated to operate in emergency mode. No such emergency has taken place...
