This dune is situated 45km from Sesriem gate, the main access point to the Namib-Naukluft National Park. Hence the name...
The dunes of the Namib Desert were created by the sand carried by the wind from the coast of Namibia.
The sand here is five million years old and it is red due to its iron oxide content.

We all get busy during the hectic holiday season, but please let's not forget those less fortunate than we are. Too many people are having trouble keeping themselves and their families fed.
I've been there. It's hard.
Give what you can to the disadvantaged in your community and elsewhere. Every little bit makes a difference.
One way to do this is through the Little Free Pantries. Little Free Pantries are a resource from which to receive and a place to which to give. When looking for your nearest pantry to donate, consider your neighbors and what foods they might need. The Little Free Pantries provide food from neighbors for neighbors, and donating has a positive impact on the recipients, the givers, and their communities.
These pantries are open 24 hours a day and 7 days a week. No ID is required and anyone is welcome to give and receive food from them. They are a no-barrier access point to food, but too many are empty or near-empty, like the one in the photo.

This 2710-sq-km national park contains three of Ecuador’s most magnificent volcanoes – the mightily active Sangay, the remittently active Tungurahua and the extinct El Altar. Because the park ranges from glaciated mountain tops to tropical rainforests, it offers flora, fauna and terrain of immense diversity. The two official park entrances (not always manned) are near the Hacienda Releche, the access point to El Altar, and just north of Pondoa, the access point for Tungurahua.

Tungurahua, from Quichua tunguri (throat) and rahua (fire), "Throat of Fire") is an active stratovolcano located in the Cordillera Oriental of Ecuador. The volcano gives its name to the province of Tungurahua. Volcanic activity restarted on August 19, 1999, and is ongoing as of 2013, with several major eruptions since then, the last starting on 1 February 2014.

It was love at first sight. It was decided that I would climb it to the summit of this volcano happily.

Volcán Tungurahua is a bit of pest, regularly spewing and causing trouble for the locals below. But it's also a boon, providing jungle-frontier-town Baños with steaming thermal pools, choc-full of allegedly health-giving minerals, as well as local Bañenos taking their regular dips. Visit one of the cheap public bathhouses for a muscle soothe and a cultural insight.

Aiguille du Midi 3842m - Chamonix Mont-Blanc, France
The Aiguille du Midi is a 3842m peak in the Mont Blanc massif of the French Alps. This is the closest you can get to the summit of Mont-Blanc without hiking or climbing.
The Aiguille du Midi is the highest mountain peak served by an aerial lift system. The name translates literally to "Needle of the Mid-day". The mountain lies to the south-east of Chamonix and when viewed from in front of the church it indicates that it is noon when the sun passes over its summit.
The Aiguille du Midi is an extremely popular attraction with nearly half a million visitors per year. It is open all year round, except for the annual maintenance period in November (that can vary around two or three weeks) and during extremely bad weather conditions.
The Aiguille du Midi is an ideal starting point of the Three Monts route to ascend Mont-Blanc. The intermediate point, Plan de l'Aiguille (2,317m), is the mid station of the Aiguille du Midi cable car and is an access point for off piste skiing and ski touring in the winter season, hiking, rock climbing, paragliding in the spring, summer and autumn seasons.
A great day excursion is to walk from the Plan d'Aiguille to the Montenvers Train Station and Mer de Glace and take the train back down to Chamonix (or vice-versa).
The Aiguille du Midi cable car leaves from the centre of Chamonix Town (1035m) up to the summit of the Aiguile du Midi (3842m). You can see here the 2015 Aiguille du Midi Cable Car opening closing dates and times and summer - winter prices for the Aiguille du Midi lift, Montenvers train and the Panoramic Mont Blanc cable car to Point Helbronner.
It is a two-stage journey. The first leg brings visitors to the Plan de l'Aiguille (2,317m). The second stage, without any support pillar, traverses Les Pelerins glacier before rising up the North Face of the Aiguille du Midi at the top station (3778m). A footbridge connects the cable car top station with the Central Piton terrace. An elevator inside the rock rises the visitor the final 42m to the top terrace at an altitude of 3,842m.
From the terraces of the Aiguille du Midi, there is a departure point for the Panoramic Mont Blanc cable car, the highest cable car in the world, which connects France to Italy. The 5km journey goes across the Mont Blanc Massif, from the Aiguille du Midi to Point Helbronner. From Point Helbronner, the Funivie cable car line descends into the La Palud area of Courmayeur, Italy. Rebuilt and re-opened in 2015, the Italian top station is a nice place to visit, with a sunny terrace with 360 degree views of the Mont Blanc massif, and a different perspective of the mountains.
The Aiguille du Midi cable car holds the world record for the highest vertical ascent: 2807m (from 1035m to 3842m). This is the closest you can get to the Mont Blanc on a lift system. From here, there is no cable car to the summit of Mont Blanc.
History of the Aiguille du Midi Cable Car
The Aiguille du Midi gondola was first thought of by two Swiss engineers in 1905. Their plan was to link the hamlet of Les Pelerins with the summit of l'Aiguille du Midi. The project met technical problems and was abandoned. Four years later a French company, Funicular Railways, made a new attempt and the first section Les Pelerins - La Para was opened in 1924.
The second section La Para - Les Glaciers was completed three years later. It was then the highest cable car in the world - a title held for about two decades. With the outbreak of the WWII and the opening of the Planpraz to Brevent cable car, the popularity of the Aiguille du Midi diminished and it was closed in 1951. An Italian engineer, Count Dino Lora Totino, was called in to rebuild and extend the cable car.
This photo was taken at the Hope Boat Launch on Highway 200 East, along the northern shoreline of Lake Pend Oreille in Bonner County, Idaho, within the Pend Oreille Wildlife Management Area. Although it doesn’t appear to be so here, Lake Pend Oreille is Idaho’s largest lake by both surface area and depth, reaching well over 1,000 feet (or 304.8 meters) deep in places. This quiet spot shows a much more intimate side of the lake — a calm shoreline, forested hills, and a simple gravel access point at the water’s edge. On this cloudy, threatening-to-rain day, the lake felt secluded and understated. Incidentally, the lake was named after the Pend d’Oreille people, an Indigenous tribe whose name is French for “ear pendant” or “earring,” referring to the shell ornaments they wore and, according to some accounts, the shape of this 43 mile long (69 kilometers) lake.

The New York and New Jersey Railway is one of two surviving example of a car float left in the lower 48 United States, which bridges the gap between the New York market to points west. With the only other rail access point to New York City being via Selkirk, NY, the car float saves time by cutting a 260 mile journey up and down the Hudson River into a 3.5 mile trip across the Upper New York Bay.
Today's special guest across the bay is New York and Atlantic Railway MP15AC 151, which is being transported from Fresh Pond Yard in Queens to Metro East Industries in East Saint Louis, IL. Locomotives are generally not floated across the bay, so seeing one being transported via barge instead of traveling via Selkirk is a rare treat.
I got to trundle past the many mighty peaks of the Avenue of the Volcanoes.

Los Ilinizas Ecological Reserve extends across approximately 150,000 hectares of volcanic peak, small-cropper fields, páramo (grasslands), cloud forest and valley. It is accessed just 55km south of Quito and extends through much of the Quilotoa Loop area. There's great hiking here – much of it on unnamed trails that locals can point out.
The small village of El Chaupi is your best northern access point to the park's twin peaks, Iliniza Norte (5,126m/16,817ft) and Iliniza Sur (5248m/17,217ft), respectively the sixth- and eighth-highest mountains in Ecuador. Once part of a single volcanic cone, the two spires are now separated by a narrow, sloping saddle.

Although they’re close in height, Iliniza Sur has a permanent glacier due to greater humidity and so is a highly technical climb requiring training and a slew of ice-climbing tools. Extremely popular as an acclimatization hike, Iliniza Norte is a more approachable, but still demanding, ascent, with scree, rocky scrambles near the top and sometimes snow. Guided climbs (one-/two-day trip $90/$180), mountain-bike rentals (per day $15) and horseback rides ($35, three to four hours) can be arranged at the Hostal La Llovizna in El Chaupi. La Llovizna also rents climbing gear, sleeping bags and mountain bikes.
To get into the park, continue from El Chaupi, on foot or by hired pickup, for about 3km to the national park control and then another 6km to the parking lot at La Virgen shrine. From there, it is a roughly two-hour hike to the Refugio Nuevos Horizontes. It's a further two hours' climb from the refugio to the peak of Iliniza Norte; be sure to go with a qualified guide.

Mt Rainier National Park, Washington, framed by clouds welling up in the valley and the ever present trees from the Sunrise access point.
Joy and I had the opportunity to spend 20 days exploring Olympic and Rainier National Parks and the Oregon coast. The road trip covered 4000 miles. Coming from the brown of southern California, the intensity of the GREEN in the temperate rain forests wad almost overwhelming. The weather was tough (it is a RAIN forest!) and the light challenging, but it was a magnificent trip. I hope you enjoy some of the shots

It's been surprisingly difficult to get close enough to these little guys for a decent shot! Half the lake was frozen, so that drove them to the side closer to my access point.
Here’s photo of the Redfield Dam (in Redfield, Iowa) spanning the Middle Raccoon River. This is the other side of the river or reverse angle of the photo I posted last November (seen here: flic.kr/p/2rD7PwH).
I am standing at a river access point for a canoe or boat and looking east into the town of Redfield. I had a lot of autumn photos this past year and didn’t get around to posting all of them.

A manhole cover or maintenance hole cover is a removable plate forming the lid over the opening of a manhole, an opening large enough for a person to pass through that is used as an access point for an underground vault or pipe. It is designed to prevent anyone or anything from falling in, and to keep out unauthorized persons and material. Manhole covers date back at least to the era of ancient Rome, which had sewer grates made from stone.
With only 1 car to take to L'anse, L539 crawls along at a whopping 10 mph through the small area along US 41 known as Three Lakes. With only a few miles to Nestoria, this would be the last time we see the train for a solid hour until the next access point that is accessible by road.

This was a day of many firsts - first day of the New Year, first day of a new decade, first footsteps in fresh snow on trail, first sunset, first time at the beach....you get the idea. I think we should treat each day this way. Perhaps I'll make that my New Year's resolution.
This was our last stop before the long drive home and what began as a quick mediocre sunset evolved a few minutes later into what you see here. This beach access point was actually cordoned off because of high water levels and erosion - I used the barrier to hold my camera steady. Ironically, the local government bulldozed a segment of the beach flat to accommodate tourism - affecting an endangered Piping Plover habitat in the process, and incurring a fine from the Ministry of Natural Resources. High water levels and windy weather have since eroded the beach to the point that this part, at least, is no longer accessible.

Boats rest in the harbor of Ushuaia, Argentina, where the Beagle Channel meets the mountains of Tierra del Fuego at a natural threshold for navigation. Framed by mountains of muted colors, the port serves as a key maritime access point for travel through southern Patagonia and the surrounding subantarctic waters.
Wasn't my first choice of location but I was on about plan F by this point with news that 56094 had been ripped off the Longport Job and having already missed 6E48 and unable to make it to Corby for the gypsum I had to make a mad dash here to Durranhill for a very mediocre shot of it. Of course the sun wasn't high enough for the standard shot so I had to bang on the full zoom, however with all the snow and frosty tops, it's not too bad all things considered.
To the left where the crossover is, was the site of the recent Petteril Bridge derailment and to the right of the loco is the site which Network Rail spent weeks digging out for their access point to the derailment, where the crane would later be stationed to lift the cement tanks out of the river.
One of those evening moments down by the beach at Trelissick Park looking south across Carrick Roads to Falmouth - Pendennis Castle can be seen on the far distant horizon . The beach here is quite small with a wall running side to side with an access point that you can see . I have seen a very high tide actually come through the gap on a previous visit here . In the first comment box there is a shot taken looking along the wall to give you an idea of a different POV .
As always there are a few boats moored out there to add an extra interest .

About 50 miles/80km northwest of Beijing is a major access point to the Great Wall in the town of Badaling.
The day we visited, the smog had lifted a bit. You can see the haze discoloration in the sky, but also if you look carefully at the center top, you can see that the wall continues on past the horizon.
Climbing this historic structure is awe inspiring - and great stair stepping exercise! This section was built in 1504-5 and restored in 1957.
My 2015 experience: the Chinese residents whom I encountered over a few trips, including the ones who were also tourists at Badaling & were from many diverse cultures and parts of China, are among the most respectful, generous and kind hosts whom I have encountered globally.
I’m also a comparatively tall white guy with a beard, so I am in a few family photos now ... a curiosity on a landmark. :-)

Castello Scaligero di Sirmione
Built in the 13th century.
The castle is a fortress from the Scaliger era. Serves as an access point to the historical center of Sirmione, on Lake Garda.
It is one of Italy's best preserved castles.

The La Ruffin Spring Bridge or the Suspension Bridge is an architectural landmark. It was the last functioning spring bridge in Trinidad. It was built in 1899 under the then Director of Public Works, Walsh Wrightson, a colonial official from England. The primary function of the bridge was to transport cocoa out of estates such as La Retreite, to the rest of the country. It facilitated access across the River of Hope, to a steamer collection point at La Ruffin. Cocoa estates dominated the landscape of Moruga in the late 19th century. Coffee was also grown.
As time passed and the cocoa and coffee estates declined, the bridge remained a primary access point to La Ruffin Beach. Unfortunately, the bridge collapsed in 1993. It was subsequently repaired but it has since deteriorated. The spring bridge is now closed and a newer bridge functions alongside it.

The Maroon Bells are two peaks in the Elk Mountains, Maroon Peak and North Maroon Peak, separated by about half a kilometer (one-third of a mile).[5] The mountains are on the border between Pitkin County and Gunnison County, Colorado, United States, about 12 miles (19 km) southwest of Aspen. Both peaks are fourteeners. Maroon Peak, at 14,163 feet (4317 m), is the 27th highest peak in Colorado. North Maroon Peak, at 14,019 feet (4273 m), is the 50th highest (depending on how they are counted). The view of the Maroon Bells to the southwest from the Maroon Creek valley is commonly photographed. The peaks are located in the Maroon Bells–Snowmass Wilderness of White River National Forest.[6][7] Maroon Bells-Snowmass Wilderness was one of five areas in Colorado designated as wilderness in the original Wilderness Act of 1964. The Wilderness area surrounds the extremely popular Maroon Bells Scenic Area, which is a major access point for Wilderness travel.[8]
Unlike other mountains in the Rockies that are composed of granite and limestone, the Bells are composed of metamorphic sedimentary mudstone that has hardened into rock over millions of years. Mudstone is weak and fractures readily, giving rise to dangerously loose rock along almost any route. A US Forest Service sign on the access trail warns would-be climbers of "downsloping, loose, rotten and unstable" rock that "kills without warning". The mudstone is also responsible for the Bells' distinctive maroon color. The Bells got their "deadly" reputation in 1965 when eight people died in five separate accidents.
Maroon Lake elevation 9,580 ft (2,920 m) occupies a basin that was sculpted by Ice-Age glaciers and later dammed by a landslide and rockfall debris from the steep slopes above the valley floor.
We returned to Harlech once again - I never would have expected the town to hold so many adventures back when I first looked up Welsh castles. Little did I know when we visited the castle that an interesting derelict building was so close by.
With that new knowledge, we dove into the overgrowth that surrounded the area, looking for an access point. We were twarted for some time but, as you can tell from this photograph, we were able to get in. As usual, (presumably) teenagers had destroyed much of the building, ripping down walls, smashing windows, graffitiing everything else.
It was a very windy night and this shot was an absolute nightmare to take, particuraly an HDR. It also needed a lot of post production done due to how dark it was - I really had to crank up the ISO. Still, I think it was worth it - it was a moody night.
I did not climb the steps as I was not staying at the hotel. There is a public access point out of the view of the photo that is tricky to walk spacing wise but there is not the 98 steps down. that way.
