Although I use to live in Geneseo and passed by the sign many times, I had never visited the Abbey of the Genesee before today. I knew they made Monks' Bread there but I didn't know how beautiful the location was. They have 2,400 acres of mostly undeveloped land that is simply pure tranquility. Today's weather was horrible and so I only spent about 30 minutes exploring their grounds but I can't wait to go back.

A question for my film geek friends.

I was on retreat at the Abbey of the Genesee last week. The Olympus OM-2 got a lot of use. Unfortunately, the shots with relatively bright backgrounds ended up with banding such as you see here. The dark bands (light bands on the negative) are lined up with the sprocket holes in the film.

I am flummoxed as to what the cause might be. The camera was extremely well taken care of by the previous owner. I used it extensively the summer of 2018 and did not get any banding. The only difference I can think of is that I developed this and the previous roll in CineStill monobath instead of my old faithful D76. Since I don't think light leaks were the cause, I'm going to get the next roll commercially developed and see what we can see. Strange.

I'll have more from this set later on -- I did get some shots that worked well -- but I wanted to get this one out in front of people.

Bethlehem Retreat House is over one hundred years old, and was probably a hotel back in the days of the Genesee Valley Canal that ran nearby. It was the first monastery for the founders of the Abbey of the Genesee in 1951 when they arrived in the Genesee Valley.

In 1974, the Dutch priest and writer Henri Nouwen was allowed to live with the community of monks as a temporary member for seven months. This is rather unusual, because while the Trappists do accept retreatants for some days, it is usually not possible to become a "temporary monk" as Nouwen did. The permission was granted particularly due to Nouwen's close friendship with Abbot John Eudes.

After his retreat, Nouwen's diary was published in 1976 under the title The Genesee Diary - Report from a Trappist Monastery. This book is now deemed one of the fundamental works about Trappist spirituality and contemplative life in general. February 21 Dom. John Eudes Bamberger, O.C.S.O., 1926-2020

On August 24, 2001, Fr. John Eudes celebrated his 75th birthday. In accord with the Constitutions of the Order, he submitted his letter of resignation to the Abbot General. His resignation was accepted by the Abbot General, with the consent of his Council, on 4 September. His resignation is effective as of 14 September 2001.

After his retirement, Later he was named Superior ad nutum of Guimaras (Philippines) which he served from 2001 until 2002. He also served as Editor of Cistercian publications. For a period of time, Dom John Eudes lived the life of a hermit at the monastery while continuing to teach and work in the community. As his health needs increased, he took up residence in the abbey infirmary. He regularly participated in community prayer and liturgy.

Gethsemani Abbey made its fourth foundation on 2,400 acres of farmland and forest on the western bank of the Genesee River, 30 miles south of the city of Rochester, in the beautiful Genesee Valley in northwestern New York State in 1951.

There they balance solitude, community, and celebration of the Liturgy of the Hours, with common work in the bakery. www.trappists.org/genesee-abbey/

A significant part of the monks' labor includes baking a brand of bread called Monks' Bread which is sold at the Abbey store and distributed to regional supermarkets. The sale of the bread helps support the abbey and its inhabitants. The bread was originally made by one of the monks, Brother Sylvester, for the monastic community and its guests. Over time, demand for loaves from outsiders gradually led to the development of the current commercial operation.

The bread is baked several times each week in the early hours of the morning. For that reason the monks go to bed around seven at night in order to rise about two in the morning. For reasons of security and hygiene, it is not possible to observe the baking process except through slides and photographs.

February 21 Dom. John Eudes Bamberger, O.C.S.O., 1926-2020

On August 24, 2001, Fr. John Eudes celebrated his 75th birthday. In accord with the Constitutions of the Order, he submitted his letter of resignation to the Abbot General. His resignation was accepted by the Abbot General, with the consent of his Council, on 4 September. His resignation is effective as of 14 September 2001.

After his retirement, Later he was named Superior ad nutum of Guimaras (Philippines) which he served from 2001 until 2002. He also served as Editor of Cistercian publications. For a period of time, Dom John Eudes lived the life of a hermit at the monastery while continuing to teach and work in the community. As his health needs increased, he took up residence in the abbey infirmary. He regularly participated in community prayer and liturgy.

Genesee Abbey

Gethsemani Abbey made its fourth foundation on 2,400 acres of farmland and forest on the western bank of the Genesee River, 30 miles south of the city of Rochester, in the beautiful Genesee Valley in northwestern New York State in 1951.

There they balance solitude, community, and celebration of the Liturgy of the Hours, with common work in the bakery.

Guest House: Retreatants are welcome all year round at our abbey to enjoy some private time in peace and solitude.

A significant part of the monks' labor includes baking a brand of bread called Monks' Bread which is sold at the Abbey store and distributed to regional supermarkets. The sale of the bread helps support the abbey and its inhabitants. The bread was originally made by one of the monks, Brother Sylvester, for the monastic community and its guests. Over time, demand for loaves from outsiders gradually led to the development of the current commercial operation.

The bread is baked several times each week in the early hours of the morning. For that reason the monks go to bed around seven at night in order to rise about two in the morning. For reasons of security and hygiene, it is not possible to observe the baking process except through slides and photographs.
