DME engine "Larry Pressler" leads CP H20 with over 150 cars entering Goodview.

Last weekend I was on my way home from Milwaukee and decided to take the scenic route up the river instead of HWY 94. I got up to Goodview and noticed this ballast train without a crew tied down on the DME. Should I wait? Nah, who knows when they'll get a crew and its cloudy anyways, so I left. I found some eastbound traffic with trains 250 and 260 around Reads Landing and hung out there for a shot, by then the clouds started to clear. I glanced at ATCS to check on the second eastbound when I noticed there was a light off the DME into the siding, the ballast train! Google maps said it was a 40 min drive to Dakota where I thought I might first see it, so I decided to roll the dice and race back south. I found their tail end going through Homer when I cleared Winona, they were doing every bit of track speed (60 mph). I finally got to the west end of Donehower just in time to setup for a shot passing one of the river houses. Worth the drive back, not sure when I'll see three KCS SD70MAC's on a train again. They've been running pretty frequently on ballast trains but I haven't been able to catch too many.

This is DME's daily westbound freight, Winona, MN-Belle Fourche,SD. A solid set of blue/yellow was very hard to get in 1992, as DME had not painted very many units at this time. Power 6359,6360,6363, all ex MILW SD40-2's. This is still one of my favorite "special" units painted.

The Sunday morning run of the Greensboro to Roanoke N&W 611 excursion crosses the Kate's Creek Trestle just West of Goodview, about 30 minutes out of Roanoke on the old Virginian Railway.

HLCX 8148, looking awfully tasty with its cab mounted K5LA, swings past Tower CK and into Goodview, where it will shove into the DM&E connection. From there the DME crew will take the train West towards Waseca on the former Ball & Bar.

The daily westbound manifest from Winona, MN to Belle Fourche, SD for DME is just leaving the joint CNW/DME yard in Winona. Four SD9/SD10's are the power for this, with the leader being ex MILW "bandit". 545,6615,6605,553. This train is crossing from the eastward track from Soo Line's River sub to DME's own track (ex CNW ALCo line).

Columbia coal load, Soo Line #880, with CNW8511,CNW7015, runs along Soo Line's old MILW River Sub. Eastward main removed not all that long ago and Westward main still has bolted rail. This C40-8 still in as delivered Zito yellow. They didn't stay long in this paint, as GE repainted them due to fading almost immediately.

I left work to find H19 in the process of making a pickup/setout at Goodview and had just enough time to go home and grab my camera. Sun even made a brief appearance between snow showers up near Weaver.

CP train WWA-12 takes extra cars from Winona to Waseca.

The former Virginian Railway is famous for high trestles, and the one over Kate's Creek is no exception. 611 steams eastbound towards Altavista, and eventually the piedmont mainline.
