This is a cake that I made for Halloween with a zombie hand clawing its way out of the grave. Despite its unappetitizing appearance, the cake is actually very delicious with a flourless Grand Marnier chocolate cake and dark chocolate glaze. The fingers are made with marzipan. See blog entry for recipe.
Camponotus castaneus infected with Ophiocordyceps kimflemingiae
This Ophiocordyceps sp. is one of 15 newly described in the recent paper, "Zombie-ant fungi across continents: 15 new species and new combinations within Ophiocordyceps. I. Myrmecophilous hirsutelloid species", by João Araújo, David Hughes, Harry Evans and Ryan Kepler.
Also, the biological clock of this species has recently been studied by Charissa de Bekker and co-authors.
I was given the opportunity to document the zombie ants here in South Carolina when David Hughes visited in late 2009 after seeing a few of my pictures here on Flickr. It's been great working with David, Charissa, João, Raquel Lareto and others over the years. I was really surprised and honored when I found out they planned to name the fungus after me. I really can't think of anything more cool to have as a namesake!

As this photo shows the Zombie Virus is real despite denials from the Centers for Disease Control and NIH. Beware YOU could be the next victim!!!! OR, perhaps it's peppercorns with a bit of Fractalius fun. We may never know... For Macro Mondays Group -- topic, Halloween
That tormented zombie nun again, with her cross pendant in a gold chain. I'm not sure why she was looking at me, if it was brains she was after... Can you imagine that in real life she's into koalas? I often feel zombie nuns are more versatile than we give them credit for.
Jumped on the tube and met these two awesome zombies that were meeting up with others to march through central London

This is my first ever zombie scene and I feel that it worked out really well but I don't think I will be doing another one. I hope you enjoy this scene.
The stroy about this scene is that in the apocalypse the military has been comprimised leaving only the resistance, the only remaining mercenary team has fallen back to their last stand where they have lost half of there workforce and the battle is almost won, but the casualties have been severe and there supplies are running thing ad they can't last much longer.
This is my new girl. I believe she is a DZ Cherry, though she was advertised as a Recall she doesn't look like one at all. She was modded by her previous owner ReinaMuerta. I am so thrilled to have her.

For Zombies, finding a suitable career is a must to have a swift recovery!
I.E. Hot dog salesman, dentist, waiter or a chef!
5:15am: I stumble in after an amazing night at club med. My pants and underwear are soaked due to being in the hot tub and not having a towel. I'm drunk, tired and seconds from falling over. I strip and pass out within seconds of hitting the pillow.
8 solid hours of sleep later and I was still drunk! I went and got a glass of watered down ice tea and some aspirin. I sat down at my computer and within 5 minutes spilled the tea all over my desk. Somehow I managed to not soak the computer or the tablet. The keyboard is lifted off the desk so that was safe. I'm paranoid of drowning my computer yet every time there is a close call, it seems to narrowly avoid disaster.
I decided after the near catastrophe that I better go back to bed and sleep off what ever booze is left in my system. 4 more hours of sleep and I'm just about sober. Shawn comes to me with an interesting idea, zombies! I had a zombie theme on my list of ideas since the beginning of the project but haven't really thought of doing it. I figured why not and the idea was set.
We looked over several different YouTube tutorials on Zombie makeup and effects. However, in the end we decided that today would be a test for a larger shot later in the week. We would do this shot with minimal makeup and photoshop would finish it off. Part 2 would have more makeup and more people…. And more blood!
The blood was made with cornstarch, corn syrup, red food coloring and coco powder. The works great for in the mouth and on skin but it cakes up when on clothing. I'm not happy with the look of the blood on the shirt. Part 2 will have to have a different blood recipe.
Shooting was straight forward with a typical 3 light setup. 2 edge lights and a boomed main light. While setting up, Shawn was getting into character by laying on the ground and moaning like a zombie. A passerby would more likely thing he'd just fallen and I was a dick for not helping him! WIth the lights setup and ready to fire, Shawn would load up on blood and just let it pour and I started snapping away. We captured around 30 shots in all. I sent Shawn to clean himself up and I broke down the gear. I was mildly worried about the staining affects of red food coloring but Shawn said there was no issue with removing it. Now when I do this to strangers I wont worry about staining them! It just brings back memories of the Aboriginal shoot when I painted Ben Price! So far I'm 2-0 with not disfiguring volunteers!
Post production is, once again… where the magic happened. I started in by darkening the eyes sockets, turning the eyes red and deepening the tones in and around his major facial features. I chipped his teeth and furthered the nasty coloring. Paling his skin to near grayscale really drove the effect home. It just so happens that I used my skin tone as a base line for what a zombie should look like. When I go out in the sun I put on spf 100+! Thats like a thick paste! Anyway… I masked him out and dropped in one of my favorite non people shots from my trip.
This tunnel was a one way tunnel going through the mountain in San Francisco leading into Golden Gate National Recreation Area. There was a 5 minutes light on either end of the tunnel. It was very long and driving through at 50mph took a minute. I had decided to have Joyce drop me off on the outside and I'd run in. I ran full speed until I found a section that looked right. I then placed the tripod down and with preconfigered settings I set the 2 second timer and let the camera take three exposures for later combination to HDR. As I was waiting for the last series of shots to take I heard a car in the distance. Had I really been in there 5 minutes already? The tunnel didn't have enough room for me to hug the wall and wait. I had to get out of there and fast. I picked up the tripod and in a true olympic style sprinted out. Just like out of a movie I exit the tunnel and not a second later a car flies out of the tunnel as if it was shot from a canon! I love close calls but that one got my heart pumping. Well, that and the running!
The detail is in the large version and those of you who see it printed 24x36 will see what i'm talking about. I really made Shawn look disgusting!!
On a side note, I was disappointed that more people didn't find my cyborg shots as interesting as I did. I really thought they looked cool. Oh well, you win some you lose some!
