During my last trip to Zion, I was on a hunt for this tree. I had seen it in a photo by Ryan Engstrom with the milky way in the sky taken during the wee hours of the morning. I found it just a couple 100 ft from the road and the next time I'm in Zion this is the first nights subject.

Thank you for taking the time to take a look at my photos and as always, your views, comments, faves, and support are greatly appreciated!! Have a great day ahead my friends :)

The Sentinel, a 7157' peak on the West Rim of Zion Canyon, catches the first rays of the sun as it rises above the eastern Zion Plateau.

The resultant glow of the brilliant light on the sandstone reflects in the Virgin River near the Sand bench Trail, some 3,000' below. On this winter morning, the temperatures along the Floor of the Valley were hovering around 27°F, with icy roads and fresh snow along the river and surrounding area. Fresh animal tracks from deer, turkey, and bobcat indicated that there was quite a bit of activity earlier in the morning than our time here.

The temperatures kept most tourists at bay until later in the morning, though sunrise on January 2 occurred around 7:45 AM - convenient for this preferably late rising landscape photographer. As the day wore on, with no shuttle service in Zion National Park during this time of year, the roads became thick with cars parked alongside regardless of the multitude of signs telling people to park in designated spots only.

Scenes like this, though, tell me that spending much more time in this park is warranted - though come early and explore before the crowds arrive.

Here's an outtake from my trip to Zion last winter. Not my favorite shot, but I took it because of how the mountain was illuminated by the pre-sunset light. I abandoned this composition quickly since my intent was to shoot the Watchman and this was the only evening of the trip in which there was a good chance for sunset colors. It was my mistake to come here without first looking at compositions by @brycemironuck_photography and @alomranmha but I guess there's always a next time!

At midnight the traffic serpentines up the roadway towards the Tunnel at Zion National Park.

Here's the second location of a 42 hour shooting blitz that William McIntosh and I embarked on over the weekend. The plan was to start out in Zion National Park for a shot that we both had on our bucket list and then continue through to Death Valley for some daytime scouting, then over to the Alabama Hills for the sunset and some more nightscape photography.

While in Death Valley I received a call from my climbing partner Tony Eggnozzi, informing me that he was currently in Alabama Hills with about 30 or so other climbers and wanted to know if I would like to join them. We met up with him and the climbing crew and joined them at the campground. It was nice to sleep inside of a Camping Trailer and get 2 hours of actual sleep before setting off to our final location. During the entire trip Bill and I traded off driving duties and grabbed just enough sleep to continue on as to help keep the driver company and awake which is always a good thing. All told I think I slept maybe 5 hours the entire trip but I'll tell you what, when I finally arrived home I hit the bed like a ton of bricks.

I have made several attempts at this shot, and I'm not even sure if attempt is an accurate description. The first attempt was two years ago. I was completely shut out by clouds and never even made the trip up the trail, the second trip it was the weather again, lightning and harsh winds had me concerned about being out on an open ledge, it is very exposed at the overlook so that kept me from another attempt. Thankfully, the weather was much better this time and I grabbed the shot I had envisioned many years ago. If you look at my post from last week called "Tunnel View" You will see a chain link fence at the top of the photo, that is where this shot was captured. Hope you like it!!! :)

Zion National Park in Utah. It's a nice park that's entered from the bottom of the canyon instead of the top like Grand Canyon. Beautiful colors with hiking and biking trails. It's a day trip from Las Vegas. #ZionNationalPark #NPS #nature #Natur #hiking #Wandern #randonnée #山 #ハイキング

Parco Nazionale dello Zion. Istituito nel 1919 per salvaguardare quest'area costituita da un lungo canyon (24 km di lunghezza per 800 mt di profondità) scavato nei millenni dal Virgin River, che scorre nel suo fondo, e dai suoi tanti affluenti.

Zion National Park.

Massive HDR multi-row panorama shot at 70mm.

This was a ten mile hike through ankle-deep mud. We got our rental SUV stuck in the mud two miles from the trailhead; I did manage to get it unstuck but we had to walk the rest of the way. I lost a pair of hiking boots because they were too caked with thick mud to get back into my already-overpacked suitcase... but I'd do it all again for this view!!!

When we go back in 2022, we are going to hike out and spend about 4-6 hours here before we hike back.

We are planning to bring blankets, cards, and food so that we can just sit and enjoy what I consider to be the nicest spot on Earth that I have ever yet been.

Oh and I almost forgot. Max Zoom!

Zion National Park: This is looking north and the sun is rising to my right – the sun is nicely lighting up the mountainside while the sky still retains an early morning glow.

This is near the Pa'rus Trail – I walked east from the trail to avoid the trail being in the photo and to capture the valley floor

Utah is all about colors so I had to get the mono out of my system. Colors going forward for a few. :-)

The Zion National Park in Utah is an amazing place. Turn around a corner, yet another breathtaking view of the red rocks. I held the camera low on this footpath. It just started to sprinkle a bit.

I processed a balanced and a paintery HDR photo from three RAW exposures, then merged them using the paintery version for the wood and shrubs.

We made a quick day trip to Zion National Park. I am so glad we did because the sunset was glorious!

Happy Saturated Saturday!

Color My World Daily - Pink/Purple

Took this one with my buddy William McIntosh at Zion National Park. We scrambled up to William's sacred spot and eagerly awaited the sunset. Things were looking good but in the last 20 mins the clouds shifted to the east and started to light up the sky in the wrong direction. I quickly bailed from my over the valley composition and started shooting anything I could find facing the direction of the colorful clouds. You should have seen us, Bill and I sat there chanting, willing and hoping that the clouds would shift but mother nature was not hearing us.. :) So, not being my ideal shot for the evenings sunset, I think it still turned out to be a decent photo. I'm glad that we were alone in this spot or someone might have thought we were nuts or at least Bill was nuts out on the ledge literally a 5x5ft area with at least a 30ft drop in any direction, not even enough room for two tripods. Maybe they would be right? LOL. :)

I know my Flickr Friends are probably getting tired of my daily posts, I realize that's a lot of posting, but I have over 200 photos from 13 trips taken this year alone. And I need to get this stuff up here. I thank those of you that continue to encourage and support my photography even at this rate of posts. Maybe I should start a project like David Kingham. A photo a day for 365 days, When I saw him undertake his project I thought it was crazy to post everyday. Now I know why he's posting so many. :)

Thanks for taking the time to take a look at my photos, and as always, your views, comments, faves, and support are greatly appreciated!! Have a great Wednesday ahead everybody!! :)

This high dynamic range photo taken near Zion's river, the Virgin River, was the hardest to take and later blend. Let me know you thoughts on this photo.

An iPhone shot of the Watchman in Zion NP

We hiked out to Cable Mountain and looked down into the Zion Canyon. The Virgin River and the road curves around Angels Landing. There is a tiny tour bus in the lower middle of the frame.
