• NB : When SAA took delivery of its 1st B747 ZS-SAN in 1971, there were no spare engines in South Africa for this new aircraft, it was decided to deliver the aircraft, including a 5th engine fitted directly from factory - as represented on the picture.

Early morning condensation for this dawn arrival of a lovely 747 Classic of South African. London Heathrow 2002
Varig Brasil McDonnell Douglas DC-10-30 PP-VMS taxies past South African Airways Boeing 747-244B ZS-SAN at London Heathrow with flight RG757 from Rio de Janeiro. The aircraft is wearing the all-white variation of the livery which the three ex-Singapore Airlines aircraft wore, rather than the standard silver finish livery. Note the bird scarer in the foreground near the runway - I wonder how many people captured that on film!
Interestingly, ZS-SAN operated the very first SAA Boeing 747 passenger flight, after crew training 10-11 Dec 1971 Jhb-Luanda-Ilha do Sal-LHR. After a flying career with SAA of 32 years, the aircraft was donated in 2003 to the SAA Museum at Rand airport, Germiston - Johannesburg.
Varig of Brasil was one of the first non-American airlines to start using the DC-10 on long-haul flights in 1974, and they were regular weekly visitors to Heathrow - on a Wednesday afternoon if my memory serves me right.
PP-VMS c/n 47818 - McDonnell Douglas DC-10-30 had a varied life, being delivered new to Singapore Airlines as 9V-SDG in January 1980 but leased out immediately to Varig as PP-VMS. I believe the Singapore DC-10s quickly became surplus in the largely Boeing fleet. The aircraft flew with Varig until 1992, before being sold and leased a number of times through the 1990s. The aircraft was converted to a freighter in 2002, and flew with DAS Air Cargo as 5X-ROY and Air Zimbabwe as Z-ALT before eventually being stored at Crestview, Florida in 2013.

Rand 04/05/2003: Lebombo gave a spirited display and was retired the following year to be preserved with the South African Airways Museum at Rand

Back to early 1997 for this one, loved this scheme. Then again I love most classic schemes seeing how modern schemes suck!
This aircraft no longer fly's but was lucky enough to avoid the scrap man. She is preserved in Rand, South Africa at the SAA Museum.
