Day 172 of 365: a year in songs and photos
Song; DRI - Worker Bee
The bumble bees would not cooperate with me (see previous photos), but this humble little yellow jacket politely posed for my camera for about ten minutes. Thank you, Mr. Yellow Jacket, I will not forget your kindness when I am mowing the lawn next week. I will refrain from my usual habit of gleefully running down your friends and family while yelling "DIE, BEES, DIE!" Oh, those bumble bees or whatever they are - they are SO dead. But you yellow jackets get to live another season.
I really don't know one bee from another and I have no idea if this is a worker bee, but it's pretty damn hard to find a good song about bees and when I found some DRI lyrics, I decided to use them, for old time's sake. Spent many a night in a dingy, smelly club getting wasted, starting fights we couldn't finish and thrashing around to DRI songs.
So 20 years later I'm sitting here processing bee photos and cleaning my house while listening to Dirty Rotten Imbiciles. Some things just remain constant. Thankfully, the other things haven't. Taking photos of bees is unlikely to get me arrested. Unless I go through with my promise of going outside naked and slathered in honey....
You're a worker bee
Can't you see?
A cog in the wheel
Of their factory
You'll do what you're told
Until you grow old
Or you get laid off
Because the company's sold
Change your mind
To change the way
You've lived up tilll now
Go somewhere
And have some fun
While you remember how
They'll buy a machine
Know what I mean?
It punches your holes
At twice the speed
And half the cost
Look at the boss
A smile on his face
He's laughing his ass off
Change your mind
To change the way
You've lived up tilll now
Go somewhere
And have some fun
If you remember how
Geez. Thanks for the sobering thoughts, guys. Maybe I should go back to slam dancing....
A First Test with my new nikkor wide angle Lens. It was a sunny winterday its shoot out of the Hand. It‘s a typical wide angle!
Hope you‘ll like!
hello guys, how's everyone doing? Sorry I've been a little absent lately, I am really busy and I haven't had the time to answer all the messages I got. But be sure I read them all :)
Let me present to you a photo I did for a new store in my city, Saboon - Real Care.
I really liked this photo, the lighting, the colors... and I hope you will too :)
There are more photos on my blog. I hope you'll take a little time to visit and leave a comment there. I would appreciate the support.
You'll remember me when the west wind moves
Upon the fields of barley
You'll forget the sun in his jealous sky
As we walk in fields of gold
So she took her love
For to gaze awhile
Upon the fields of barley
In his arms she fell as her hair came down
Among the fields of gold
(Sting, Fields of Gold)
Couldn't help thinking of this song whilst taking this shot, one of my favourites
Please check out my other images and feel free to comment, many thanks
I hope you'll enjoy the my images as much as I enjoyed taking them.
Not as colourful as some of its relatives, the coal tit has a distinctive grey back, black cap, and white patch at the back of its neck. Its smaller, more slender bill than blue or great tits means it can feed more successfully in conifers. A regular visitor to most feeders, they will take and store food for eating later.
In winter they join with other tits to form flocks which roam through woodlands and gardens in search of food.

On all our tours I encourage our guests to also shoot verticals, not only horizontals. Magazines for instance, are all based on verticals, so if you ever want your picture to grace the cover or to be published on a full page, you'll need to shoot verticals as well.
A little while back I got an email from British Airways, asking whether I had a vertical version of my famous picture The Edge, of an elephant at Victoria Falls. And as a matter of fact I did, I just never processed it. When I started processing the image, I wondered why I hadn't done it earlier - the vertical version seems to make more sense because you can actually see the height of the falls and you can see all the water falling down.
Anyway, British Airways published the shot and I was happy they had given me a good reason to dive into my image library again.
Here's the background story that I wrote for the horizontal version:
-
It's hard enough to make original pictures, but with some subjects it simply borders the impossible.
When I was at Victoria Falls last year, I thought about the billions of photographs that must have been taken there, and I almost decided to just visit the place without my camera. That was until I spoke with some of the local people, who told me that they had seen a bull elephant crossing the Zambezi river the day before. During my research I had not seen any images of the falls with an elephant in it, so I decided to stay a few extra days and try my luck.
The course of the Zambezi is dotted with numerous tree-covered islands, which increase in number as the river approaches the falls. As the dry season takes effect, the islets on the crest become wider and more numerous, and with the water level of the Zambezi dropping, once submerged walkways and fresh foraging possibilities present themselves. This elephant was apparently aware of this.
On the third day I left very early with a small boat to reach my location. On my way to the edge I suddenly saw the lone bull wading through shallow parts of the river, but it was far away and light levels were low, so I decided to continue to the falls. I took some sunrise shots and half an hour later I saw the elephant approaching the falls. I quickly collected my gear and moved carefully towards the edge where the water plummeted into a 360ft chasm - not particularly nice when you're afraid of heights... I set everything up in order to include as much as possible of the falls and made a composition. Luckily the elephant was aware of my preference to shoot into the light, so his position couldn't be better.
After I took the shots, I knew I had just witnessed and captured something very special. Later that day local people confirmed this by telling me that they had never seen an elephant so close to the edge of the falls before - exactly what I wanted to hear!
This image was featured as a double page spread in National Geographic, and won First Prize in the European Wildlife Photographer of the Year Awards.

If you have a moment, I hope you'll take the time to view this at the larger size linked below:
You'll find lots of these abandoned fishermen's wooden jetties between Seattle and Tacoma - This was one of those days when you think, why bother? Just stay in the car warm and dry - rain, rain and more rain all day long.
Still, I did get this, so it's not too bad. Thank you for looking. If you ever go to Seattle, take waterproofs.
Like clockwork, every June the first of the baby whitetail deer arrive. A little earlier than last years.
I've been hitting the usual spot for past couple weeks in anticipation, but I first spotted them this past Sunday. I spotted 3. 2 in one area together, and the other by itself in another spot...
It was a sunny day and light was a bit harsh, but i still took tons of photos. I went back on Monday which was a cloudy overcast day, which makes for better photos (better saturated color, and even lighting). These shots were taken on that day. All the photos were taken while i was in my car. It had rained a little earlier in the day, you can see they are a little wet.
You'll be seeing a LOT more of these guys..
"You're beautiful and that's for sure
You'll never ever fade
Your lovely, but it's not for sure
And I won't ever change
And though my love is rare
And though my love is true
I'm like a bird
I'll only fly away
I don't know where my soul is (Soul is)
I don't know where my home is
And baby all I need for you to know is
I'm like a bird
I'll only fly away
I don't know where my soul is (Soul is)
I don't know where my home is
And I need for you to know
Is your faith in me brings me to tears
Even after all these years
And it pains me so much to tell
That you don't know me that well
And though my love is rare
And though my love is true"

The middle photo of my family and I was NOT taken by me. The photographer's name is Carissa and I highly recommend her.
Her website is:
She did a fantastic job, we all loved her and she took our whole family including 9 grandchildren, a total of 22 of us.

You may wonder why I have personalized this work. I did so because I realize how lucky I am with my immediate family and good friends who all give me so much-needed love, help, and support. I also want to take this moment to thank all of my special Flickr friends who have given me so much. I have learned a great deal from you all and know that I have a great deal more to learn. Thank you!
I have been lucky with the amazing love and support that I have received throughout my life and fully appreciate it. I just want to remind everyone that we all need one another and we need to reach out in whatever way that we can.
On another note, I think of the amazing accomplishments that Andrea Bocelli has achieved having become blind at the age of 12. Through his will and courage, he has achieved fame and using his beautiful voice to the fullest for all of us to enjoy, such a gift to give and receive!!
Thank you for your kind visit. Have a wonderful and beautiful day! ❤️❤️❤️
This is the end
Beautiful friend
This is the end
My only friend, the end
Of our elaborate plans, the end
Of everything that stands, the end
No safety or surprise, the end
I'll never look into your eyes...again
Can you picture what will be
So limitless and free
Desperately in need...of some...stranger's hand
In a...desperate land
Lost in a Roman...wilderness of pain
And all the children are insane
All the children are insane
Waiting for the summer rain, yeah
There's danger on the edge of town
Ride the King's highway, baby
Weird scenes inside the gold mine
Ride the highway west, baby
Ride the snake, ride the snake
To the lake, the ancient lake, baby
The snake is long, seven miles
Ride the snake...he's old, and his skin is cold
The west is the best
The west is the best
Get here, and we'll do the rest
The blue bus is callin' us
The blue bus is callin' us
Driver, where you taken' us
The killer awoke before dawn, he put his boots on
He took a face from the ancient gallery
And he walked on down the hall
He went into the room where his sister lived, and...then he
Paid a visit to his brother, and then he
He walked on down the hall, and
And he came to a door...and he looked inside
Father, yes son, I want to kill you
Mother...I want to...fuck you
C'mon baby, take a chance with us
C'mon baby, take a chance with us
C'mon baby, take a chance with us
And meet me at the back of the blue bus
Doin' a blue rock
On a blue bus
Doin' a blue rock
C'mon, yeah
Kill, kill, kill, kill, kill, kill
This is the end
Beautiful friend
This is the end
My only friend, the end
It hurts to set you free
But you'll never follow me
The end of laughter and soft lies
The end of nights we tried to die
This is the end
One break you’ll find tucked away in the Southern California’s shoreline is called Sunset Cliffs. This spot is a magical haven of hidden caves and glorious little reef peaks that lead to some beautiful sandy lagoons. Sunset Cliffs Beach is a San Diego local’s favorite spot to catch some waves, watch the sunset, and enjoy a beach picnic, just be careful of getting splashed if the swell is pumping!
With over 2 miles long of beach bluffs and panoramic views, Sunset Cliffs produces some glassy barrels when the tide is low and the kelp beds and sandy bottom form the perfect beach break. But sometimes these waves come at a price because let me tell you, walking down to this surf is a journey in itself, part of the reason why this break is so mystical.
"you'll be given love
you'll be taken care of
you'll be given love
you have to trust it
maybe not from the sources
you have poured yours
maybe not from the directions
you are staring at
trust your head around
it's all around you
all is full of love
all around you..."
Today has been a little hectic with regards to my 500px account being deleted. It has now been fully reinstated and my follower count across all Social Media platforms increased dramatically thanks to articles on www.lightpaintingphotography.com, Petapixel and DIY Photography.net. about my predicament. Much appreciated to all involved and a little win for the lesser known photographic technique of light painting.
I caught Riley plowing through his own body weight in Strawberries. "You'll turn into a bloody strawberry" Is the kind of thing I catch myself saying to Riley which reminds me of the kinds of thing my parents used to say to me when I was overindulging.
Back-lit me about to eat a Strawberry then a tripod swap to the Strawberry on the table, focus and aperture change and lit using a small focused torch then a quick sweep with the LP Brushes blue filter and hood attachment.
Shot using a very versatile Nikon 60mm Macro lens Chris T very kindly lent me a while back. Cheers buddy.
Ladies and gentlemen, I shall now bid you all good day. I'm off! I know what I was cut out to do and I should have done it long ago. YOU'RE ALL RAVING MAD! None of you know what you're looking at. You wait 'til I'm dead you'll see I was right!
Santa Claus? This early?
Oh well, you never believed in that "all in one night" nonsense, did you?
Uhm, no, not really.
Okay, put the gifts where you'll remember an christmas.
Yes, can do.
Great. You haven't seen me *flash*
What was this? I'm feeling a bit dizzy...

That black laser sword handle with a crystal is supposed to be a neuralyzer, like in the Men in Black movies.
This is the back door of the second house of Birch Books, and this silly little picture took me about an hour. I hate indoor photography.
For those who don't follow me on a daily basis: This is my take on an Advent Calendar - opening 24 doors in my Lego City.

If you are lost I'll find you, if you feel lonely I'll be there for you...
Finally we got a bit of blue skies today....and still so much snow.
Incase you forgot, I’m here to remind you that the new round of Kinky has opened! It is teeming with ridiculously sexy and naughty clothing and accessories.
This chic and sexy outfit is one of the brand new things you’ll find there. I love the straps on the ribbed top and the short, flouncy skirt. The straps are optional however and customizable of course!
There are so many options with the hud to mix and match colors!
I’m also wearing this absolutely awesome monocle from CODEX which is also at Kinky. I freaking love how the lens has a bunch of different animated designs to choose from. But don’t worry of graphics aren’t your thang. You can also choose from solid colors for the lens and the opacity level as well! Plus metal
Colors too.
And BTW, a new round of The Arcade is open. Like right now! And if you look at my leg, you’ll notice this cute leg garter from Just Yaska!
I love the leather texture and the cute little bow clip on the front! It also comes in a handful of different colors too!

English translation of Petite Fleur by Petula Clark
I hid.
Better than anywhere else
In the garden of my heart
A little flower
This flower
Prettier than a bouquet
She keeps in secret
All my dreams
The love of my parents
And all those bright mornings
Made of happy distant memories
When life
At times I betrayed
You remain my happiness
Little flower
On my 20th birthday
I stopped for a moment
To breathe
That perfume I loved so much
In my heart
You'll always bloom
The great garden of love
Little flower
When life
At times I betrayed
You remain my happiness
Little flower
Spotted at Gloucester Road Underground station in London: a salamander holding an Amazonian lily pad as a parasol. A perfectly normal sight, you’ll no doubt agree…
Actually, it’s part of an art exhibition, Pond Life: Albertopolis and the Lily, by Monster Chetwynd, which references the souvenirs created to commemorate the Great Exhibition of 1856. It also nods towards the terracotta animal sculptures that decorate the exterior walls and vaulted galleries of the Natural History Museum, not far from the station.
Monster Chetwynd’s work combines performance, sculpture, painting, installation and video, and is to be found in art galleries in the UK, France, the Netherlands and Switzerland
You'll find the original of this shot on my WSOR album. You'll see why it needed to be reworked. It was one of the weirdest weather changes I had ever seen. It's November, 1997 and in Wisconsin you can expect this kind of stuff to happen. When we arrived at Slinger Road it was nice and sunny. Then the Wisconsin & Southern frame train came into view and it was still sunny. As soon as the 752 was in my camera range, I blinked and it started snowing, snowing hard. I didn't have time to change any settings on my camera. For some reason, I had set it to automatic exposure, something I never do, and wound up with a shutter speed of 1/40 sec. I had planned to chase this guy, but the road conditions would have made it impossible.I feel pretty fortunate to come away with what I did, all things considered.
#5 EXPLORE
Someday we’ll meet
And you’ll dry all my tears
Then whisper sweet
Little things in my ear
Hugging and a-kissing
...
If I could write a letter to me
And send it back in time to myself at 17
First I'd prove it's me by saying
"Look under your bed
There's a Skoal can and a Playboy
No one else would know you hid"
And then I'd say I know it's tough
When you break up after seven months
And, yeah, I know you really liked her
And it just don't seem fair
But all I can say is pain like that is fast and it's rare
And, oh, you got so much going for you, going right
But I know at 17 it's hard to see past Friday night
She wasn't right for you and still you feel like there's a knife
Sticking out of your back and you're wondering if you'll survive it
My work with snowflakes is deceptive; I favour the symmetrical snowflakes because I find them more beautiful, but it’s quite rare to find a snowflake with this level of symmetry. There’s a lot of chaos that goes into the formation of these crystals, and a symmetric snowflake is just one of countless possibilities.
They almost all start with symmetry, however. On the smallest molecular scale, all snowflakes are pretty much just hexagonal prisms. If environmental conditions (temperature, humidity, etc.) remain the same, that symmetry will continue as a snowflake grows into a larger prism. As it grows, however, something changes: as the distance from one corner to another increases, so too does the potential for different parts of a snowflake to experience slightly different conditions. There is nothing that ties the growth of all six branches of a snowflake together other than the fact that they all grow in the same conditions.
As a certain point, the “branching instability” kicks in. This is triggered when the corners of a small hexagonal snowflake can collect more available water vapour (building blocks) than the inner portions of the crystal facets; whatever stick out the farthest, grows the fastest. This is why branches form from all outwardly-facing angles of a snowflake. As branches continue to grow further from the center, the likelihood of different growth conditions – even just immeasurably small fluctuations in humidity – increases exponentially. Symmetry is still possible, but it becomes more of a lottery game as it grows. A snowflake like this would be like hitting the jackpot.
Another fun snowflake fact: the crystal structure only has primary features on one side. Notice how the inner parts of the branches are relatively lower in contrast then darker features emerge as they widen? The less-contrasty areas do have surface features, but they are on the rear side of the snowflake. Changes in growth conditions can flip the side where these details are featured – a mechanism I do not fully understand, but the evidence of it happening is right in front of you – the higher-contrast area on the “paddle” of the branches is surface details interacting with the light from my flash, showcasing the contours of the crystal.
The tiny hexagon in the center is the result of the snowflake beginning as a column which grew plates from either side. The bottom plate must have been facing the wind and grew faster, leaving the smaller plate to forever remain inside that footprint. Without access to water vapour, its growth would have nearly halted – and it would be a stable environment that allows for the maintenance of near perfect symmetry… at least at the center!
Want to know how to make snowflake images like this? The equipment, techniques, and entire editing process are detailed in my 384pg hardcover book on macro photography: skycrystals.ca/product/pre-order-macro-photography-the-un... - $75 Canadian, which is roughly USD$59.50 with the current exchange rate. Ask anyone with a copy and you’ll tell you it’s worth every penny. :)
