Continuing our tour, we reach Pyles (Πυλές) and on one of the first buildings near the entrance of the village we read a "Mantinada" couplet welcoming us:
"When you come to Pyles you'll have a pleasant time,
you will never forget the customs of our place."
Mantinades are songs played in the "panigyri", traditional celebrations. The small town is built high at the southwestern foot of Mount Meloura, to the west coast of the island, at a distance of 13 km northwest of Pigadia. The area has several orchards, olive groves, and a distant view of Kasos and the mountains of Sitia in Crete. According to local tradition, the first inhabitants of the village (17th century) were refugees who moved from the shores of the island to avoid pirates*, while later, during the Revolution of 1821, young people from neighboring Crete and Kasos settled.

You'll need sharp eyes to catch sight of an American Bittern. This streaky, brown, and buff heron can materialize among the reeds, and disappear as quickly, especially when striking a concealment pose with neck stretched and bill pointed skyward. We spotted this one moving from one side of the reeds to the other. Usually, they can be heard but rarely seen, so we were thrilled to see this one emerge from the brush.

On March 24, 1841 the Austrian-Polish naturalist and explorer Karl Georg Theodor Kotschy (1813-1866) collected this flower in the stony hills near Aleppo, Syria. That dried exemplar is today preserved in the Gray Herbarium of Harvard University and you'll be able to find a photo of it via Tropicos.org. Kotschy traveled widely in North Africa (including what is today Sudan), Turkey, the Near- and Mideast always collecting plant specimens, well into the hundreds of thousands! Besides being a botanist and naturalist he also studied the cultures and histories of the place through which he traveled. He is considered the father of oriental studies in Austria.
