Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening

Whose woods these are I think I know.
His house is in the village though;
He will not see me stopping here
To watch his woods fill up with snow.
My little horse must think it queer
To stop without a farmhouse near
Between the woods and frozen lake
The darkest evening of the year.
He gives his harness bells a shake
To ask if there is some mistake.
The only other sound’s the sweep
Of easy wind and downy flake.
The woods are lovely, dark and deep,
But I have promises to keep,
And miles to go before I sleep,

Koizumu Yagumo (小泉八雲) is a pseudonym of Patric Lafcadio Hearn (1850-1904) who was born in Lafcada island, Greece to an Irish father and a greek mother. He emigrated to the USA and worked as journalist. He came to Japan as correspondent, visited Matsue, had a Japanese wife from a Samurai family in Matsue, and lived in this Samurai house. Koizumi is the family name of his wife. Yagumo means Izumo province.
He cancelled the correspondent contract, worked as writer and English lecturer, naturalised to Japan and died in Tokyo.
He was a pioneer Japanologist who developed a deep understanding of Japanese cultures. His best known work is "Kwaidan (怪談 spooky stories)" which is a collection of Japanese folk tales on ghosts and spectres.
His former residence is now converted to a museum for his achievements.
An updated version of a shot taken last year. I've been experimenting lately with taming the contrast levels of Fuji's RAF files to see what a "softer" touch might produce.
The faroese writer Jørgen Frantz Jacobsen was inspired to write the novel "Barbara" here. The vicar's wife was a model for Barbara, one of the most beautiful portraits of a woman in a novel in Danish language. The novel was made to a film in 1997, and the novel is translated in English twice.
I love how dorky Jehu is! She keeps a journal and has been writing songs, lately. My brother wrote music to one of them, and I guess they're going to record it soon. Sometimes we wake up on weekends to find her writing poetry.♥
The Spomenik Database was set up in 2016 by writer, history hobbyist and travel enthusiast Donald Niebyl to act as a comprehensive online resource for the most significant and notable of the abstract & modernist World War II monuments built in the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia from roughly 1960 to 1990 (structures commonly referred to as 'Spomeniks'), which are now, after the breakup of that country in the 1990s, scattered across the present-day regions of Croatia, Slovenia, N. Macedonia, Serbia, Kosovo, Bosnia i Herzegovina and Montenegro.
The spomenik complex at Podgora, Croatia, built in 1962, was intended to commemorate the creation of an anti-fascist naval force on the Dalmatian coast.
The monument, which sits on a hillside above Podgora overlooking the town, consists of two large concrete stylized 'gull wings' set on a polished-marble paneled square platform. One of the 'wings' extends straight up into the sky, towering 32m above the monument's base, while the second 'wing' is bent horizontal halfway up the sculpture. This monument is among the tallest in all Croatia and is more than likely the tallest abstract sculpture in the whole country. Up-slope from the monument, a large amphitheatre is built into the hillside, where presentations and historical lectures were once given to visitors and 'young pioneer' student groups. From the top of the amphitheatre, amazing views can be seen below of the Adriatic and coastal town of Podgora.

The Goethe House is a writer's house museum in the Innenstadt district of Frankfurt am Main, Germany. It is a birthplace of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe. Decorated with period furniture and paintings, it provides an authentic environment in which Goethe spent his youth. It is also a place where Goethe wrote his famous works Götz von Berlichingen, Faust and The Sorrows of Young Werther.
The original building was the family residence of the Goethe family, most notably Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, until 1795. Johann Wolfgang was himself born here in 1749 to his parents, Johann Caspar Goethe, a lawyer, and Katherine Elisabeth Textor, daughter of the mayor (Bürgermeister) of Frankfurt. Johann Wolfgang lived here along with his sister Cornelia until 1765, aged sixteen, when he moved to Leipzig to study law, returning sporadically thereafter. Goethe subsequently wrote about his childhood spent here in his autobiography Aus Meinem Leben: Dichtung und Wahrheit, (Out of my Life: Poetry and Truth), (1811–1833.
The house was bought in 1733 by Goethe's grandmother, Cornelia Goethe, a guest house hostess. It was in fact originally two houses, dating from around 1600 in typical medieval wooden-fronted style, until 1755, when Goethe's father extensively remodeled and modernized them into the single structure we see today. Goethe writes in his autobiography that his father was careful to preserve the double overhang of the facade, which was not permitted in new buildings under the codes of 1719 and 1749, emphasizing that it was a remodeling of the existing structures and not a new construction.
After leaving the Goethe family in 1795, the house went through a series of owners, until its purchase in 1863 by geologist Otto Volger (1822–1897), who restored it to the condition the Goethe family had left it in, as a monument to its famous inhabitant. The house was destroyed during the Allied bombing of Frankfurt on May 22, 1944, but was restored after the war between 1947 and 1951, as closely as possible to its original condition and furnishing, giving an insight into what life was like for a reasonably wealthy resident of Frankfurt in the 18th century. It is next door to the Goethe Museum, which opened to the public along with the restored Goethe House in 1954, and nearby are the excavated foundations of the Jewish ghetto, which, along with the Jewish cemetery, gives a further glimpse of the older Frankfurt as Goethe himself would have experienced it.

This was shot with the help of a big tripod, a manfrotto Magic-Arm and a really shacky ladder. Lit by a Profoto D1 in a beautydish, I used f1.4 and 1/250, ISO 64 to keep a little bit of the ambient light. Otherwise the spotlight-effect would be too strong...

I love poetry, and nothing delights me more than to find a poet who is new to me. To settle down on a winter's night and open a new book of poetry!
I have always loved poetry, and have carried a poetry book with me, when possible (sometimes copying poems into small notebooks to fit in my pocket.) I'm old enough to remember the revolution that Penguin books brought - small affordable paperbacks! Bliss!
I'm quite eclectic in my definition of poetry, and include both Haiku and the Tao Te Ching. Anything where words resonate - and "less is more" to the reader.
Here I've taken a very small selection from my large poetry book-shelf, and book-ended them with two American poets who are Nobel laureates. Many writers include poetry in their output - but few make it their central focus.
If the phrase "can't hold a candle to" is unclear I looked it up - it means I'm not in the same league as any of them 😊
