Listening to Carole King today… another old Rocker that’s made beautiful music for a number of years.

Carole King is an American singer, songwriter, and musician who has been active since 1958. King has made 25 solo albums, the most successful being Tapestry, which held the record for most weeks at No. 1 by a female artist for more than 20 years.

Her record sales were estimated at more than 75 million copies worldwide. She has won four Grammy Awards and was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame. She has been inducted twice into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, as a performer and songwriter.

The Hooded Merganser:

Spotted this Female Hooded Merganser Strutting Her Stuff after finishing a breakfast of Frog Legs alfresco. The legs were still attached to the frog, so it took her awhile to dine, but she seems to have had a Happy Ending : )

Hooded Mergansers are fairly common on small ponds and rivers, where they dive for fish, crayfish, and other food, seizing it in their thin, serrated bills. They find their prey underwater by sight. They can actually change the refractive properties of their eyes to improve their underwater vision. In addition, they have an extra eyelid, called a “nictitating membrane,” which is transparent and helps protect the eye during swimming, like a pair of goggles.

Hooded Merganser ducklings leave their nest cavity within 24 hours of hatching. First, their mother checks the area around the nest and calls to the nestlings from ground level. From inside the nest, the little fluffballs scramble up to the entrance hole and then flutter to the ground, which may be 50 feet or more below them. In some cases, they have to walk half a mile or more with their mother to the nearest body of water.

The oldest recorded Hooded Merganser was a male and at least 14 years, 6 months old when he was shot in Mississippi in 2009. He had been banded in Minnesota in 1995.

Red Squirrel - Sciurus Vulgaris

Highlands, Scotland.

The red squirrel is found in both coniferous forest and temperate broadleaf woodlands. The squirrel makes a drey (nest) out of twigs in a branch-fork, forming a domed structure about 25 to 30 cm in diameter. This is lined with moss, leaves, grass and bark. Tree hollows and woodpecker holes are also used. The red squirrel is a solitary animal and is shy and reluctant to share food with others. However, outside the breeding season and particularly in winter, several red squirrels may share a drey to keep warm. Social organization is based on dominance hierarchies within and between sexes; although males are not necessarily dominant to females, the dominant animals tend to be larger and older than subordinate animals, and dominant males tend to have larger home ranges than subordinate males or females.

Red squirrels that survive their first winter have a life expectancy of 3 years. Individuals may reach 7 years of age, and 10 in captivity. Survival is positively related to availability of autumn–winter tree seeds; on average, 75–85% of juveniles die during their first winter, and mortality is approximately 50% for winters following the first.

Although not thought to be under any threat worldwide, the red squirrel has nevertheless drastically reduced in number in the United Kingdom; especially after the grey squirrels were introduced from North America in the 1870s. Fewer than 140,000 individuals are thought to be left in 2013; approximately 85% of which are in Scotland, with the Isle of Wight being the largest haven in England. A local charity, the Wight Squirrel Project,[26] supports red squirrel conservation on the island, and islanders are actively recommended to report any invasive greys. The population decrease in Britain is often ascribed to the introduction of the eastern grey squirrel from North America, but the loss and fragmentation of its native woodland habitat has also played a role.

In January 1998, eradication of the non-native North American grey squirrel began on the North Wales island of Anglesey. This facilitated the natural recovery of the small remnant red squirrel population. It was followed by the successful reintroduction of the red squirrel into the pine stands of Newborough Forest. Subsequent reintroductions into broadleaved woodland followed and today the island has the single largest red squirrel population in Wales. Brownsea Island in Poole Harbour is also populated exclusively by red rather than grey squirrels (approximately 200 individuals).

An adult Mountain Lion (Puma concolor) rests in the woods on the edge of a rocky ledge at the entrance of Glendale Cove off Knight Inlet on the west coast of Canada.

We were on a wildlife tour, primarily for Grizzly Bear, with Tide Rip Grizzly Tours out of Telegraph Cove on the northeast tip of Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Canada.

It is a boat tour which holds about 10 people and you are out for most of the day. If I remember, it is about 90 minutes travel to Glendale Cove but you never know what you may encounter. In this case, it was their first Mountain Lion observation and we had about 5 minutes as it patiently observed us and the surrounding area before disappearing into the woods.

It is something I will never forget, thankfully with some photos to remind me of that once in a lifetime observation.

Like all crows worldwide the Pied Crow is very much an opportunist. This one and many others like it were more often than not seen around human habitation. In this case it was found around the back of a restaurant, no doubt looking for food left overs.

We only came across one other species of crow on this trip and that was the House Crow. A bird that had been introduced by there British to Zanzibar in 1897. The idea was that the house crows would clean up the waste left by humans. Alas they spread really easily throughout East Africa and are now regarded as an invasive species. In fact I believe that a they have also reached Holland as recently as 1998.

This work is done for continuing with my Positive Flags of the Nations with especially celebrating and sharing love.

We met with other local photographers for Worldwide Instameet. Getting to wander the banks of mighty Yuba with like-minded photography friends was a treat! Rain fell off and on all day, then treated us to a couple rainbows (photo of one soon). This canyon gave quite a challenge with multiple exposures. Luckily I had listened to Trey on Twip Family so I was ready for HDR exposures :)

United Kingdom, London, Oxford Circus Tube Station, Winter 2024

The London Underground (also known simply as the Underground or as the Tube) is a rapid transit system serving Greater London and some parts of the adjacent home counties of Buckinghamshire, Essex and Hertfordshire in England. It opened on 10 January 1863 as the world's first underground passenger railway. The network has expanded to 11 lines with 400 km of track with 272 stations and it collectively accommodates up to 5 million passenger journeys a day. The tube is an international icon for London, with the tube map, considered a design classic, having influenced many other transport maps worldwide.

@UN Climate Conference (COP23):

We have to stop worldwide deforestation !

The No. 1 problem caused by deforestation is the impact on the global carbon cycle. 300 billion tons of carbon, 40 times the annual greenhouse gas emissions from fossil fuels, is stored in trees.

Some 129 million hectares of forest - an area almost equivalent in size to South Africa - have been lost between 1990 and 2015,

This has great impact on biodiversity, water cycle, soil erosion and life quality for us all !

In September 2015, I was scouting out and photographing numerous sites around Lake Tahoe, California and many sites in the Eastern Sierras for a short 5 days.

One the night of September 17, I took the Bonsai Rock Milky Way shot with the moon just above the distant mountain peaks.

The next day we moved down into the Eastern Sierras where I had been planning to photograph the iconic bristlecone pine tree with the Milky Way. Little did I know on the way down how well the moon would come into play with my night sky photography work there.

I used a long established technique to get the moon rays in this shoot while I light painted the bristlecone pine tree with my special light.

In 2017, I will have two 5 day Milky Way photography workshop in Arches National Park in Moab, Utah, one over the 3rd week in March and one over the 3rd week in April.

During each of the two workshops, I will conduct 3 4+ hour Milky Way Photoshop post processing session where I teach all the techniques I used to create this final photo but this time it will be more of what is called a "Deep Dive" PS post processing session and workshop participants will need a laptop with Photoshop CS 2017. Lightroom will work but lacks some functionality used in what I will teach.

My Milky Way night sky photography workshops

In 2017, I will be leading two 4 day photography workshops in Jackson Hole. During both workshops, I will take my group out for 3 nights of my Milky Way night sky workshop.

My 2017 4-5 day photography workshop schedule:

ANP, Canyonlands & Monument Valley - March 24-29

Icons of the Southwest w/Ryan Smith - April 23-28

Jackson Hole, Wyoming spring - June 21-25

Jackson Hole, Wyoming fall - September 19-23

The great part is that in 2017 I will return to Jackson Hole for the incredible wildflowers throughout the valley and the surrounding mountains.

Do you shoot the Milky Way but need a little help in getting the Milky Way to jump out of your photos ? If so, take a look at my ebook A Photographer's Milky Way Processing Guide - A Photoshop HowTo

Time to chill out to Adele's song ... Hello.

Thanks for stopping by.

Leaving Helsinki train station in May 2015, botanist Teemu Teeri noticed bright orange petunias in a planter. He was surprised, because petunias are not naturally orange in color, and he took a few stems to test in his laboratory. This chance encounter was the starting point of an affair that was later called the “petunia crisis” and which ultimately led to the destruction of all varieties of orange petunias worldwide.

The book "The Petunia Carnage" is based on the true story of orange petunias and follows the aftermath of Teemu Teeri's discovery, when DNA testing revealed that orange petunias were transgenic. The book looks back at the origins of orange petunias during a controversial experiment carried out in the 1990s at the Max Planck Institute in Cologne, then at their mysterious “escape from the laboratory”. Finally, he explains why orange petunias were deemed "illegal" after being bred and sold without permits for over 25 years, leading to their mass destruction worldwide in 2017.

The story of orange petunias is more than a scientific anecdote – it's a parable of what can happen when scientific interest, commercial marketing logic, sociopolitical values, public discourse and unexpected coincidences collide .
