National Child Labour Project (NCLP, Govt. of India), in its 25 years of existence since 1988, only 8, 52,179 child labourers were withdrawn from work and sent to mainstream schools. Currently there are 7311 Special Schools in 266 districts.
Under the Scheme, child labour as defined under the schedule of the Child Labour (Prohibition and Regulation) Act, 1986, are identified through a survey, withdrawn from work and put into the special schools, so as to provide them with enabling environment to join mainstream education system. In these Special Schools, besides formal education, they are provided stipend @ Rs.100/- per month, nutrition, vocational training and regular health check-ups. The Scheme also envisages awareness generation campaigns against the evils of child labour and enforcement of child labour laws.
A revamped NCLP programme with a proposed budget of INR Rs. 891 million (£11 million approx) bringing it in harmony with the right to education, it is envisaged would result in total abolition of child labour by the end of 12th Plan period.

I was part of a team of volunteers when I visited this school. My friends from Himalayan Medical Camp are working with them for years. On that day, all the children of the school received woollen sweaters just before the cold winter. We had lunch with the students and learned their experience.
Himalayan Medical Camp, a voluntary organisation of nature lovers and doctors, formed in 1992 by one of my friends, Milan Nag. This low-profile group of climber-activists has trekked in the clouds of the Himalayas on several occasions, treating some 3,000 villagers and carrying out over a hundred eye operations - all free of cost! An estimated 15.5 million children (Age 5-17 years) worldwide – most of them under age – are working as domestic workers in people’s homes, in hazardous and sometimes slavery-like conditions, says the ILO.
Seven and a half million of these child labourers are aged between five and 14 years-old. More than 71 per cent are girls.
Vulnerable to physical, psychological and sexual violence and abusive working conditions, they are often isolated from their families, hidden from the public eye and become highly dependent on their employers. Many might end up being commercially sexually exploited.

The 2001 Census found an increase in the number of child labourers in India from 11.28 million in 1991 to 12.66 million in 2001.
As per census 2001, Uttar Pradesh (15.22%) recorded the highest share of child labour in the country, followed by Andra Pradesh (10.76%), Rajasthan (9.97%), Bihar (8.82%), Madhya Pradesh (8.41%), and West Bengal (6.77%).
The major occupations engaging child labour in India are Pan, Bidi & Cigarettes (21%), Construction (17%), Domestic workers (15%) and Spinning & weaving (11%).

ILO’s most recent (2008) global estimate is that 305 million children (aged 5-17 years) worldwide are involved in child labour, with more than half this number involved in its worst forms. The children concerned should be at school being educated, and acquiring skills that prepare them for decent work as adults. By entering the labour market prematurely, they are deprived of this critical education and training that can help to lift them, their families and communities out of a cycle of poverty.

Today, June 12th, the World Day against Child Labour focuses on the elimination of child labour in agriculture and related activities. According to ILO (International Labour Organization), 70% of the World’s working children are found in the agricultural sector, more than 132 million children between the ages og 5 and 14 years are involved in some of the most hazardous forms of child labour.
In Brazil, after 14 consecutive years of sinking statistics, once again the numbers are on the rise. According to the latest research, figures soared from 2.77 million in 1994 to 2.93 million in 2005, 1.2 million of these children are involved in agriculture.

Human Rights and Social Justice... Let's End Child Labour!
This year the World Day Against Child Labour will provide a spotlight on the right of all children to be protected from child labour and from other violations of fundamental human rights. In 2010 the international community adopted a Roadmap for achieving the elimination of the worst forms of child labour by 2016, which stressed that child labour is an impediment to children’s rights and a barrier to development. World Day 2012 will highlight the work that needs to be done to make the roadmap a reality.

World Photo Day 2014 (August 19th) marks a special anniversary for photographers across the globe. It marks the 175th anniversary of the first permanent photographic process patented and freely released to the world on August 19th, 1839.
Mid-Day meals programme in India is a massive social welfare programme aiming at attracting children in to the educational main stream and also providing them with all the much needed supplementary nutrition to make them healthy and worthy citizens of the country. Under this programme, freashly cooked mid-day meals are provided in all government and government aided primary schools with a view to protect children from hunger, increase school enrollment and attendance and simultaneously improving nutritional levels among children. This is the world’s largest school feeding programme, reaching out to almost 150 million children in over 1.2 million schools daily across the country with a public expenditure of Rs. 132,150 million (GBP £1320 million) in 2013–14. Mid-Day meals programme in India is a massive social welfare programme aiming at attracting children in to the educational main stream and also providing them with all the much needed supplementary nutrition to make them healthy and worthy citizens of the country.
In mid 1995, the government of India introduced a centrally sponsored scheme, the national programme of nutritional support to primary education. Under this programme, cooked mid-day meals were to be introduced in all government and government aided primary schools with a view to protect children from hunger, increase school enrollment and attendance and simultaneously improving nutritional levels among children.
Enrolment in primary schools (classes I – V) has steadily increased from 107.1 million in 1995-96, the year in which Mid Day Meal Scheme was introduced, to 130.8 million in 2004-05. Similarly, drop out rate (Primary) is also decreased from 42.07% in 1995-96 to 29.00% in 2004-05.
The government of India has set aside Rs 11,937 crore (USD$ 2400 million approx) for the Mid Day Meal Scheme during 2012-13 financial year. This is the world’s largest school feeding programme, reaching out to almost 150 million children in over 1.2 million schools across the country.

This year's World Day against Child Labour puts the spotlight on the plight of 115 million children involved in hazardous work – more than half of the estimated 215 million child labourers in the world. ...
He is engaged in tiger prawn (Penaeus monodon) seedlings (locally named ‘meen’) collection in Dayapur, West Bengal, India, very near to the tiger population (other side of the river bank) of Sundarbans Reserve Forest.
Tiger Prawn Seed Collection : The Hazards
Children engaged in tiger prawn seedlings collection leave the education system early in favour of lucrative on the spot earning of about Rs.10–15 (U.S. $25–30 cents) per day. They are prone to tiger attack and as they are always working in the waist-deep river water, so shark (locally named ‘Cammot’) and crocodyle (Crcodylus porosus) attack is also common. In addition, due to direct and prolonged contact with the seawater, they also develop waterborne diseases, skin infections, reproductive tract disease (in girl children) and some contiguous diseases.
Children are also subjected to varieties of economic exploitation by the traders and brokers of the prwan seed trade network who collect the seedlings from the river bank and transport them to the main market.
Tiger Prawn Seed Collection : The Ecological Impact
Shrimp exports constitute 75% of total marine products exported to US and European markets from West Bengal. There is also a large demand for tiger prawn seedlings from Bangladesh, resulting in substantial illegal crossborder trade.
Tiger prawn seedlings collection is one of the greatest threats to the Sundarbans’ mangrove ecology. Thousands of people have turned to collecting tiger prawn seedlings for ready cash. They use nylon nets, which are dragged along the riverbanks. In the process of harvesting of prawn seedlings, around 50 species of finfish juvenile and 28 species of shellfish juveniles are wasted per net per day, making the activity highly unsustainable. The destruction of seed of finfish and shellfish has been estimated at a total of 454.6 million during the collection seasons in a year. Collectors also destroy juveniles of other prawn species, crabs, mollusks and a huge bulk of holoplankters and meroplankters. Constant dragging of nets along the coast and tidal creeks leads to soil erosion, uprooting the mangrove seedlings and saltmarsh vegetation (like Ipomea pescarpae, Sueda maritima sp.).
Many environmental activists think that tiger prawn seedlings collection is one of the causes of recent ecological disaster in Sundarbans Biosphere Reserve.

The Census found an increase in the number of child labourers from 11.28 million in 1991 to 12.66 million in 2001.
The major occupations engaging child labour are Pan, Bidi & Cigarettes (21%), Construction (17%), Domestic workers (15%) and Spinning & weaving (11%).
As per census 2001, Uttar Pradesh (15.22%) recorded the highest share of child labour in the country, followed by Andra Pradesh (10.76%), Rajasthan (9.97%), Bihar (8.82%), Madhya Pradesh (8.41%), and West Bengal (6.77%).

Human Rights and Social Justice... Let's End Child Labour!
This year the World Day Against Child Labour will provide a spotlight on the right of all children to be protected from child labour and from other violations of fundamental human rights. In 2010 the international community adopted a Roadmap for achieving the elimination of the worst forms of child labour by 2016, which stressed that child labour is an impediment to children’s rights and a barrier to development. World Day 2012 will highlight the work that needs to be done to make the roadmap a reality.
However the ILO’s most recent (2008) global estimate is that 305 million children (aged 5-17 years) worldwide are involved in child labour, with more than half this number involved in its worst forms. The children concerned should be at school being educated, and acquiring skills that prepare them for decent work as adults. By entering the labour market prematurely, they are deprived of this critical education and training that can help to lift them, their families and communities out of a cycle of poverty.

Children at their teens are engaged in hazardous painting and metal working job in a manufacturing unit of infamous Vano (a low cost motorized van operating in Bengal and adjoining states illegally) - less than 40 km from the state capital, Kolkata, West Bengal, India. There are around 0.55 million children involved in child labour in the state of West Bengal alone.
World Day Against Child Labour 12 June
Each year on 12 June, the World Day brings together governments, employers and workers organizations, civil society, as well as millions of people from around the world to highlight the plight of child labourers and what can be done to help them.
