Timber wolves are social animals and the ancestor of all domestic dogs. In the wild they can live in packs of 5 – 10 individuals and have a highly organised social structure.
The leaders of the pack are the alpha male and female, the other members are offspring from previous years who have a strong hierarchical system. The hierarchy is maintained through body postures and other behavioural patterns. Each pack fiercely defends a territory of several hundred square kilometres by scent marking the boundary and howling to members of the same pack and other packs. The alpha male and female are the only animals who breed, so are constantly tested by the subordinate animals who want to become dominant.
The timber wolf is listed as least concern on the IUCN Red List, and does still maintain a relatively stable population across a reasonably widespread range in the wild. However, wolves are still under strong threat from deliberate persecution due to depredation on livestock, with many the victims of deliberate poisoning.
These images were taken on a Members Wolf Walk held by the UK Wolf Conservation Trust www.ukwolf.org. The trust has 7 wolves living in 3 packs. The trust aims to raise awareness of the plight of wolves around the world. Even though these wolves have been desensitised to humans they are still wild wolves. The wolves set the pace on the walks and decide how long the 'meet & greets' go on for.
