In the media, the VC has been giving the impression that JNU students simply want to drink and dance all night, and the University cannot'be expected to bear the costs of such orgies. But Mr.VC, you claim you don't want to fund .
our all-night parties, what is your objection to funding our all-night study? We remind you that JNU stu-.

The truth is-the JNU Administration's move to deny funding for hostel nights is only part of a larger gameplan to withdrawfunding for several basic facilities including even electricity! The debate over the hostel nights, as posed bythe VC, is a false one. Let us consider some facts about the hostel nights: .
Students themselves bear the costs ofdinner, music and dance; the Administration only funds the cultural evening. JNU's cultural nights are known for their healthy and participative nature. Bywithdrawing funding, the JNU Admin-istration is trying to force JNU students to go for corporate sponsorship for the cultural activities, which will destroy the unique and democratic nature of these celebrations. .
The VC claims that students at dance parties get drunk and indulge in violence and sexual harassment. May we .
remind him that violence and sexual harassment in JNU have taken place, not in dance parties alone but even in classrooms and teachers' homes and hostels? Sexual harassment is not encouraged by students at dance parties but rather by the VC when he refuses to punish the guilty. .

The·struggle against the Model Act must target the policies of the HRD Ministry. Recall that Sanjay Paswan, HRD Ministerfor State, had appeared publicly on stage with ojhas, and had announced that 'ojhai' should be included in the curriculum.ltwas recently r~vealed that in Aurangabad, Paswan's own constituency, an ojha killed a small boy .
as a human sacrifice. This reminds us that the HRD's Model Act will not just be a model of commercialization-it will impose this barbarous model of saffron obscurantism on education. .
On the 24th of February,.trade unions all over the country are striking against liberalization. On the same day various left and democratic groups, including AISA, have called for a massive protest at the HRD, with .
the central demand : 'Scrap Model Act I'. We call upon JNU students to observe a JNU Bandh on 24th Feb. in .
solidaritywith the striking workers, and to mobilize massively to make the united protest at the HRD a success. .
The JNUSU, naturally, has the crucial task of spearheading the campaign for continued funding of hostel nights, for extended library facilities and other issues on the Charter of Demands, as well for the Protest on the 241h Feb. It is disturbing, therefore, that at last night Council Meeting the quorum could not be fulfilled. The minimum number of .
coundllors was absent, not just In the case of the ABVP and NSUI representatives but even SFI-AISF councillors in SLL&CS and SSS. Thi~ lack of seriousness towards the role of JNUSU on such crucial issues and protests isworrying. · .
