These animals can live up to 150 years...so cool. I think they are Galapogas island tortoises. They basically move really really slowly and don't do much but you can get up close to them at the western plains zoo in Dubbo, NSW, Australia. More animal photos to come over the next week or so.

This is part of a 3 part mural found at 30 Rockefeller Plaza in New York City. The mural is called Wisdom, Light and Sound by Lew Lawrie and this is the 'Wisdom' portion. Next time I'm in New York I'll try to get all three. I really love the Art Deco features of Rockefeller Plaza. I was in New York on business and I didn't have a lot of spare time to just capture it all. Maybe next time.

Virginia’s Past Today
My two books, Virginia’s Past Today and Barboursville’s Vineyards: Crafting Great Wines Inspired by Spirits of the Past, are somewhat connected. In the summer of 1959, the National Geographic’s illustrations editor informed me of a story they were doing on Hampton Roads. Although the photography was staffed, he nevertheless sent a dozen rolls of Kodachrome, saying that since I knew the area, the magazine would pay me if they used any of my images. Among the shots I made were of the harbor pilots, a profession where son often follows father. Later that summer, I visited historic Shirley plantation. I thought that as a working farm for over nine generations in the same family, it might develop into a little picture story. Before leaving, I met the late Hill Carter and his parents and took a family picture on the steps of their venerable old home. They represented the ninth and tenth generations of the same family to live and work at Shirley plantation! The word continuance was unfolding into a theme and I began thinking there must be many other subjects throughout Virginia that would fit this thesis. In the early 1950s, I returned to Shirley, then made pictures of fox hunting, and a wonderful Mennonite family from the Shenandoah Valley. These three subjects, plus the pictures of the Virginia pilots, formed the central core for the book. Yet time would become a factor as other responsibilities prevented active pursuit of additional essays until the mid-1990s. Fortunately, the passing years have provided a useful perspective to compare the earlier images of these four subjects with the later additions.
BABOURSVILLE’S VINEYARDS
Crafting Great Wines Inspired by Spirits of the Past
In early September 2005, while visiting Barboursville Vineyards with my wife Bernice, I learned of the success the vineyard was experiencing. Believing there might be a good magazine feature story here, I contacted Luca Paschina, the general manager and winemaker. The following week I met Luca, who had a copy of Virginia’s Past Today. After a brief conversation he surprised me by asking if I would be interested in doing a book on Barboursville. Although flattered, I expressed some reservations on how well a book on this subject might sell. When I learned more about the historic accomplishments of James Barbour, together with his connection with Thomas Jefferson and of the contributions of the multitalented Philip Mazzei, I began to see the possibilities. Learning more of how the Zonin family from Italy became involved with the estate some three decades earlier added to my interest. The clincher was when Luca told me that well over 80,000 visitors tour the winery each year and that many were interested in having a book relating to these extraordinary individuals and their contributions to what is happening at Barboursville today.
