Stew Albert is shown in the office of the Berkeley Tribe alternative newspaper April 12, 1970 with the paper’s headline quoting Gov. Ronald Reagan as threatening a “bloodbath” against anti-Vietnam War protesters on campuses in California.

Reagan’s full quote was “If it takes a bloodbath let’s get it over with. No more appeasement.”

Stewart Edward "Stew" Albert (December 4, 1939 – January 30, 2006) was an early member of the Yippies, an anti-Vietnam War political activist, and an important figure in the New Left movement of the 1960s.

Born in the Sheepshead Bay section of Brooklyn, New York, to a New York City employee, he had a relatively conventional political life in his youth, though he was among those who protested the execution of Caryl Chessman.

He graduated from Pace University, where he majored in politics and philosophy, and worked for a while for the City of New York welfare department.

In 1965, he left New York for San Francisco, where he met the poet Allen Ginsberg at the City Lights Bookstore.

Within a few days, he was volunteering at the Vietnam Day Committee in Berkeley, California. It was there he met Jerry Rubin and Abbie Hoffman, with whom he co-founded the Youth International Party or Yippies.

He also met Bobby Seale and other Black Panther Party members there and became a full-time political activist. Rubin once said that Albert was a better educator than most of the professors.

Among the many activities he participated in with the Yippies were throwing money off the balcony at the New York Stock Exchange, the 1967 Exorcism of the Pentagon, and the 1968 Presidential campaign of a pig named Pigasus. He was arrested at the disturbances outside the 1968 Democratic National Convention and was named as an unindicted co-conspirator in the Chicago Seven case.

His wife, Judy Gumbo Albert, claimed, according to his New York Times obituary, this was because he was working as a correspondent for the Berkeley Barb. Later, he would work closely with the Berkeley Tribe underground newspaper and lived at the Tribe's commune when he was not traveling for political engagements.

In 1970, he ran for sheriff of Alameda County, California, in revenge for "getting my balls sprayed with hot, painful chemicals as a welcome-to-prison health measure" after being arrested in 1969.

Although he lost to the incumbent, Frank Madigan, Albert garnered 65,000 votes, in an ironic twist, in a race with the sheriff who had supervised his earlier incarceration during the Vietnam Day Committee anti-draft protests in downtown Oakland.

After the Weather Underground helped Timothy Leary escape from a California prison, where he had been imprisoned for possessing L.S.D., Albert helped arrange for Leary to stay with Eldridge Cleaver in Algeria.

In 1971, he was subpoenaed before several grand juries investigating the political bombing of the U. S. Capitol by the Weather Underground in March 1971, as well as a conspiracy by the Piggy Bank Six to bomb several branches of First National City Bank in Manhattan the previous year. He was not charged in either case.

In the early 1970s, he and his wife sued the FBI for planting an illegal wiretap in his house. They won a $20,000 settlement and, in 1978, two FBI supervisors were fired for this action.

In 1984, he and his wife moved to Portland, Oregon. They co-edited an anthology, The Sixties Papers: Documents of a Rebellious Decade, that collected material that originated in the Civil Rights Movement, Students for a Democratic Society, the anti-war movement, the counterculture, and the women's movement.

His memoir, Who the Hell is Stew Albert?, was published by Red Hen Press in 2005. He ran the Yippie Reading Room until he died of liver cancer brought on by hepatitis in 2006. Two days before his death, he posted on his blog, "My politics haven't changed."

Yesterday, Tuesday the fifth of February, was the Washington for Impeachment Lobby Day. Fifteen or twenty citizens gathered at the Capitol Campus and spent a good portion of the day lobbying and talking to legislators and legislative aids about the importance of impeachment.

It started raining as soon as I left my house. It was windy. It was cold. I almost turned around and returned home. By the time I got to the Capitol Campus, I was considerably wet (though definitely not soaking, which was good.) I went into the cafeteria where I found my fellow impeachment advocates.

We split up into different groups and proceeded to the offices of the various legislators who have the power to make or break this effort in the Washington State legislature to call for impeachment investigations in the US Congress. There are two bills, sister bills, one each in the State Senate and House. In the House, HJM 4027 was co-sponsored by Representatives Chase, Hasegawa, Moeller and Dickerson. It is currently in the House State Government and Tribal Affairs Committee. Representative Sam Hunt chairs that committee. He is not interested in bringing the memorial to a vote. Word has it that Senator Patty Murray's office has been in contact with Representative Hunt and has lobbied to stifle the state level impeachment initiative. Apparently, Senator Murray has also sent word to the office of Representative Frank Chopp, who has also been influenced by the US Senator's position on impeachment.

In the Senate, SJM 8016 was passed out of its committee (Government Operations and Elections) of origin in the first week of the legislative session. It was co-sponsored by Senators Oemig, Regala, Kohl-Welles, Kline, Spanel, Fairley, Kauffman, Fraser, and Prentice. This bill is waiting to be "pulled" in the Senate Rules Committee. When a bill is "pulled," it means that it will be brought to the floor for reading before the full Senate.

Okay, so if none of this makes sense to you, and you don't know what is going on with impeachment as it relates to members of the Bush Administration, or the current environment in the US Congress, there is a very good summary article by former Representative (and House Judiciary Committee member during the Nixon impeachment proceedings) Elizabeth Holtzman. Here's an excerpt:

Judiciary Committee should move to impeach Bush and Cheney.

There is more than ample justification for impeachment. The Constitution specifies the grounds as treason, bribery or "high crimes and misdemeanors," a term that means "great and dangerous offenses that subvert the Constitution." As the House Judiciary Committee determined during Watergate, impeachment is warranted when a president puts himself above the law and gravely abuses power.

Have Bush and Cheney done that?

Yes. With the vice president's participation, President Bush repeatedly violated the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act, which requires court approval for presidential wiretaps. Former President Richard Nixon's illegal wiretapping was one of the offenses that led to his impeachment. FISA was enacted precisely to avoid such abuses by future presidents.

...

Whether or not they bring electoral rewards in 2008, impeachment proceedings are the right thing to do. They will help curb the serious abuses of this administration, and send a strong message to future administrations that no president or vice president is above the law.

Reactions from legislators, and their aids, were mixed. Some legislators were very supportive; they encouraged me and were agreeable. Most legislators (or their assistants) were polite and listened carefully (or seemed to) to my messages. Some of the legislators (or their assistants) however, were discourteous - even to the point of rudeness. For example, Representative Mark Miloscia, who sits on the House State Government and Tribal Affairs committee, was gracious enough to talk with me and my lobbying partner, Gail Johnson. However, once we entered his office, it was apparent that he was in a rush and seemed to be agitated as he organized papers on his desks. He apologized for not giving us his undivided attention. And it wouldn't have bothered me, except that he repeatedly cut us off and interrupted us in our conversation. He explained why he was personally opposed to impeachment. But he wouldn't listen to our rebuttals, or to the basic reasoning about why it is important that he lend his support and solidarity to a bi-partisan push for impeachment (in part simply because it is the right thing, and the necessary thing, to do). Representative Miloscia doesn't support HJM 4027 for two main reasons (as I understood them): 1) the memorial doesn't have the necessary support to pass (hm...maybe partly because of people like him?), and 2) he is concerned about the political viability and that it might bring harm to his re-electability, or to the electability of Democrats in general. Rep. Miloscia was worried that impeachment proceedings would have a cooling effect on the Democratic party.

Maybe he is right. In an article by Robert Parry, I noticed this passage:

On Dec. 20, 2007, Rep. John Conyers, chairman of the House Judiciary Committee, told Amy Goodman on “Democracy Now” that impeachment hearings could end up like Watergate in reverse, with today’s careerist press corps treating the notion of accountability for Bush and Vice President Dick Cheney like some kind of nutty idea.

“There is a very stark reality that with the corporatization of the media, we could end up with turning people, who should be documented in history as making many profound errors and violating the Constitution, from villains into victims,” the Michigan Democrat said.

If that's true, then our nation has been hi-jacked by a "hostile Washington News Media."Scary!

If that is true then it gives reason for clarity, consistency, unity and solidarity on impeachment.

Rep. Miloscia compared a Bush/Cheney impeachment to the Clinton episodes. It is faulty to compare the impeachment of Clinton, which had a negative impact on the Republican Party, with a would-be impeachment of Bush/Cheney. First off, the Clinton impeachment was based on perjury over an extramarital affair. The Bush/Cheney impeachment, in stark contrast, would be about "high crimes and misdemeanors" (going to war based on false pretenses, etc.). As we were leaving Rep. Miloscia's office, he refused to accept literature in support of the Washington State Impeachment Investigation Memorials, shoving papers back into my hands. He said something to the effect of, I'll throw these in the trash so you might as well take them back with you. At which point we were brusquely swept from his office. I appreciated the Representative taking the time to meet with us. This is an ultimately grave issue. It certainly deserves more than a casual display of attentiveness. After all, the President and Vice President, et al. drove this nation to war based on false pretenses! Thousands of American Service Personnel have suffered casualties. Millions of Iraqi people are suffering. The invasion was an act of aggression.

The Clinton impeachment was partisan politics. It was purely political. Holding investigations into impeachable offenses by members of the Bush Administration is not a partisan issue. It is not "political" in the partisan sense. Investigating members of the Bush Administration for criminal activity is a matter of holding our officials accountable to the rule of law. It is not okay for a President, his staff, or associated interests to break the law.

At one point, the legislative aid for Senate Rules Committee Member Senator Tracy Eide refused to receive literature and notes relating to support for impeachment investigations. I witnessed the legislative assistant treating a group of supporters in a hostile manner.

I also heard a story from some of the other lobbyists, who said that they met Senator Lisa Brown in a hallway. She said she wouldn't support SJM 8016 because there weren't enough votes. I assume she meant both in the State and in D.C. - but I'm not sure. Word of mouth has it that she also said she would not support SJM 8016 even if there were enough votes for it to pass. go figure (the Murray effect again?) I tried to meet with Senator Brown or her legislative aid, but I was not allowed to get near her office. Instead, three staffers kept me an my fellow lobbyists outside in the main hallway, where we were given notepads to write messages.

One response to my efforts was: This isn't the first time a President has broken the rules like this and gotten away with it. Why do you want do something about it now? To which I respond: I want something done about this so that a President won't break the rules like this again.

At one point a group of about a dozen of us were huddled up and re-grouping in the hallway in a legislative building. Senator Eric Oemig happened to walk by, so we stopped him for a few minutes to thank him for his courageous leadership on this issue. He had some good advice and information. He said that the best things we can do to support impeachment are to: 1) keep applying positive pressure and offering gratitude to those legislators who are already in support of the memorials, and 2) to regularly attend the Senate Rules Committee meetings in order to encourage "pulling" the bill to the Senate floor for a vote. He said that if we can pack the Rules Committee Meetings, and communicate our cause (by wearing all black clothing, or orange t-shirts, for example), that that would be powerful.

You can also call or email legislators on the Rules Committee to formally request "pulling." Positive encouragement seems like the right thing to do. If we offer support to our state legislators, perhaps they will take action to support this memorial for impeachment investigations, and in turn offer their support to our national officials.

It is up to us to hold our elected officials accountable to the rule of law. In the face of overwhelming, substantial, specific and credible evidence of wrongdoing, there is good reason to immediately commence upon impartial and unbiased investigations.

We need the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth!

I also want to add that holding elected officials accountable to the rule of law is a public interest issue. It is common sense and in the common interest to make sure that members of the Bush Administration receive appropriate consequences for any violations of the public trust.

Washington Harbour, a mixed-use development on the Georgetown waterfront running along the Potomac River, was designed in the 1980s by Arthur Cotton Moore. It features a public boardwalk promenade, lined with Postmodern-style condominiums and office space.

The Watergate complex sits on a superblock to the southeast, bound by Virginia Avenue, New Hampshire Avenue, F Street, and Rock Creek and the Potomac Parkway. The office-apartment-hotel complex is best known for being the site of burglaries that led to the Watergate scandal and the resignation of President Nixon.

The complex was built in 1967 and developed by the Italian firm Società Generale Immobiliare, which purchased the 10 acres on the defunct Chesapeake and Ohio Canal in the early 1960s for $10 million. Italian architect Luigi Moretti designed the six buildings on the site: a hotel, two office buildings, three apartment buildings and a retail center. The name of the complex was derived from the terraced step area to the north of the Lincoln Memorial that leads down to the Potomac and used to face a floating ampitheater.

The Watergate Hotel, at 2650 Virginia Avenue NW, offered 250 guest rooms and 146 suites prior to a luxury co-op renovation. The two office buildings stand at 600 New Hampshire Avenue NW and 2600 Virginia Avenue NW. In 1972, the Democratic National Committee had its headquarters on the sixth floor of the 11-story Virginia Avenue building. On May 28, 1972, a team of burglars working for Nixon's re-election campaign put wiretaps, which were monitored from across the street at the Howard Johnson's Motor Lodge hotel, and took photos in and near the DNC chairman's office. During a second burglary on June 17, 1972, to replace a malfunctioning "bug" and collect more information, five burglars were arrested and the Watergate scandal began to unfold.

The Georgetown Historic District, roughly bounded by Reservoir Rd., NW, and Dumbarton Oaks Park on the north; Rock Creek Park on the east; the Potomac River on the south; and Glover-Archbold Parkway on the west, encompasses the area laid out as a prosperous port town in 1751 prior to the establishment of the Distrcict of Columbia, and later assimilated into the city of Washington in 1871. Today, the primary commercial corridors of Georgetown are M Street and Wisconsin Avenue, which contain high-end shops, bars, and restaurants. Georgetown is home to the main campus of Georgetown University, the Old Stone House, the oldest standing building in Washington, and the embassies of France, Mongolia, Sweden, Thailand, and Ukraine.

Rusty object in the ashy remains of the fire.

Professor Cline's Haunted Monster Museum was a great, kid friendly attraction. It had a giant snake on the roof, and was full of old-school scares, like air blowing on your legs, a rotating tunnel to run through, and a levitating table during a seance. Earlier this year, arsonists burned it down. This is the second attraction to be burned down of his in the area, the locals seem to hate good, creative, fun. I went here several times when it was open, including on Halloween. In the woods there were life size fiberglass dinosaurs. Today, all that remains is the shell of the house, ashes, melted glass, burnt trees, and rusted, twisted metal. Very sad.

The Cincinnati Bell Telephone Company building on West Seventh Street in Cincinnati, Ohio was completed in 1931. The Art Deco-style building was designed by Harry Hake, a Cincinnati architect.

The 12-story builidng was designed with floor heights of at least 12 feet to house the new telephone equipment.

A decorative border above the second story is lined with niches in which cut-stone French telephones alternate with headphones. Communication is further symbolized by several reliefs showing the ancient runner, Alexander Bells's first telephone effort, flag signaling from a ship, and conventional representations of a woman with a hare, swan, and hawk. In the ornate marble lobby are gold-and-silver metal reliefs of figures symbolizing man's art, industry, and conquest of space.

The Cincinnati Bell Telephone Building was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1995.

www.cincinnatibell.com/aboutus/history/

The City and Suburban Telegraph Company, later Cincinnati Bell Telephone, was officially incorporated on July 5, 1873, becoming the first company in the city to provide direct communication between the city`s homes and businesses. Manufacturer and philanthropist Andrew Erkenbrecher became the company`s first president in 1874. Rates were fixed at $300 a year for one line.

By mid-1877, when the telephone was first demonstrated in Cincinnati, the Association was maintaining about 50 private telegraph lines between offices and plants or residences. Customers were equipped with a simple telegraph instrument and a code book, and young men who pedaled foot treadles served as operators and powered the call bells.

In September 1878, the City and Suburban Association signed a contract with the Bell Telephone Company of Boston (the nation`s first telephone service and manufacturing company) for a license to furnish Bell telephone service in the Queen City area. The Association then became the exclusive agent for Bell telephones within a 25-mile radius of Cincinnati.

Located at the corner of Fourth and Walnut streets downtown, Bell Telephonic Exchange was the first telephonic exchange in Ohio and the 10th in the nation. In 1879, the first telephone directory was published and the first line extended across the Suspension Bridge to Covington, Ky. Women, or "hello girls" who had to memorize all callers` names, took the place of men as operators, and 25 employees served more than 1,000 customers. A total of 145,392 calls had been recorded for the year.

Cincinnati Bell is one of only two American companies that continue to actively promote itself under the "Bell" name. As of August 2006, Cincinnati Bell has ceased all public usage of the last Bell logo, designed in 1969 by Saul Bass, simply opting to use a stylized, shadowed version of its corporate name on its website. The company had already removed the Bell logo from its telephone directories' covers for some time.

The newsmagazine 60 Minutes reported in 1989 that Cincinnati Bell cooperated with local police to wiretap local residents in search of alleged communist or criminal activity from 1972 to 1984.

-------- On Jan 1, 2006, Massachusetts became the first state to set CO2 emissions limits on power plants under Governor Mitt Romney.

-------- "Under my plan of a cap and trade system, electricity rates would necessarily skyrocket. Even regardless of what I say about whether coal is good or bad. Because I’m capping greenhouse gases, coal power plants, you know, natural gas, you name it — whatever the plants were, whatever the industry was, uh, they would have to retrofit their operations. Striking a New Balance

Renewing and Reviewing the PATRIOT Act

Full Event Video:

www.americanprogressaction.org/events/2009/10/PatriotAct....

“The expiration this year of several provisions of the 2001 USA PATRIOT Act…has prompted fresh debate in Congress over the appropriate balance of counterterrorism authorities for U.S. law enforcement agencies and the need to preserve American civil liberties and privacy,” said Rudy deLeon, Senior Vice President for National Security and International Policy at a Center for American Progress Action Fund event last Tuesday.

In light of the PATRIOT Act debate the Action Fund hosted a discussion with Representative Jane Harman (D-CA) and Ken Gude, Associate Director of CAP Action’s International Rights and Responsibility program, about how the government could ensure national security without compromising civil liberties.

Controversial items in the PATRIOT Act up for debate this year include the ease of access to business records, roving wire tapping provisions applicable to today’s digital technology, and surveillance of individual or “lone wolf” suspects who are unconnected to any terrorist organization. The panelists discussed the effectiveness of these provisions and whether they violated an individual’s right to privacy.

Rep. Harman has served as a member of the House Intelligence Committee for eight years and is currently chair of the Homeland Security Subcommittee on Intelligence and Terrorism Risk Assessment. She explained that a strong national security system could not come at the expense of civil liberties. “Security and liberty are reinforcing values…it’s not more of one and less at the other—it’s more of both or less of both.”

Rep. Harman lauded the Obama administration for its national security policies, but she said further steps are necessary. She praised President Barack Obama’s commitment to closing Guantanamo Bay detention camp, too, and his limiting the overclassification of material by the Homeland Security department. But she called for more debates over State Secrets Privilege—a legal precedent under which a court is asked to omit evidence based on government affidavit stating that court proceedings might release information that could jeopardize national security.

Harman commended the current House version of PATRIOT Act revisions because it would prohibit a person’s reading habits from being used as evidence of terrorist activity or intent. The bill would also change the target of a roving wiretap to a single individual rather than a single phone. Rep. Harman pointed out that the current rules are incongruent with new technology that allows a person to use disposable cell phones. New technology has made the need for a court order on every tapped phone inefficient.

Gude supported the expiration of the Lone Wolf Provision, which allows Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act investigations of lone terrorists that are not connected to a specific organization. He explained that FISA was created to monitor people connected to foreign powers or terrorist groups and therefore the threshold for obtaining a surveillance warrant was lower. He and Rep. Harman agreed that the Lone Wolf Provision leaves individuals vulnerable to a violation of privacy by the government.

Gude explained that his objection to the Lone Wolf Provision isn’t that the government should be prohibited from conducting surveillance on individuals. However, he thought traditional criminal wiretaps were more appropriate when no evidence links the person to a foreign terrorist group.

Harman said that now “we have the opportunity to debate new rules in a new environment” since after 9/11, legislators did not take time to “get [counterterrorism] laws right.” She spoke about to the “authorization to use military force” on groups connected to 9/11 that “gave the president the right to act unilaterally.” She called for a new balance of power between branches of government regarding national security issues, and said that the laws after 9/11 gave the president too much power to make counterterrorism decisions without congressional or public debate.

In the spirit of checks and balances, Gude said there was hope for bipartisan consensus on counterterrorism reforms. “On an issue like this there is probably more room for bipartisan commitment than on almost any other issue on the Hill right now,” he said. Gude and Rep. Harman recognized a need for robust debate and strong cooperation on national security reform. Rep. Harman noted that “the terrorists are not going to check our party registration before they blow us up, so we really better be in this together.”

I was already making more macros of printed circuit boards. This has in the past always worked quite well, but as close as here I am never approached due to the then low depth of field, it lacked the viewer just a lot of information about the board.

In these images, I've done two things differently:

Setup as shown us by Tilo Gockel (Thanks Tilo, cool idea!) Supplemented with slight brightening by a flash with blue gel. So I wanted to make the PCB a bit upbeat.

Demonstrators encircle the federal building in Harrisburg, Pa. with a chain March 29, 1972 protesting the trial of the Harrisburg 7--Catholic activists charged with conspiracy to blow up government building in Washington, D.C. and kidnap national security advisor Henry Kissinger.

It seemed surreal. A group of well-known Catholic activists committed to non-violence charged with conspiracy to raid federal offices, blow up government buildings and kidnap National Security Advisor Henry Kissinger using Washington D.C.’s heating tunnels to carry out the plot.

The seven charged were primarily composed of Catholic non-violent direct action activists: Phillip Berrigan, Sister Elizabeth MacAlister, Rev. Neil McLaughlin, Rev. Joseph Wenderoth, Anthony Scoblick, Mary Cain Scoblick along with Eqbal Ahmad—a Pakistani journalist and political scientist.

The trial sparked a nationwide defense effort that included a rally in Harrisburg that drew upwards of 20,000 people to support the seven.

Father Berrigan was serving time in the Lewisburg Federal Penitentiary, in central Pennsylvania at the time of the alleged conspiracy.

Boyd Douglas, who eventually would become an FBI informant and star prosecution witness - was a fellow inmate. Douglas was on a work-release at the library at nearby Bucknell University.

Douglas used his real connection with Berrigan to convince some students at Bucknell that he was an anti-war activist, telling some that he was serving time for anti-war activities. In fact, he was in prison for check forgery. In the course of the investigation the government resorted to unauthorized and illegal wiretapping.

Douglas set up a mail drop and persuaded students to transcribe letters intended for Berrigan into his school notebooks to smuggle into the prison. (They were later called, unwillingly, as government witnesses.)

Librarian Zoia Horn was jailed for nearly three weeks for refusing to testify for the prosecution on the grounds that her forced testimony would threaten intellectual and academic freedom. She was the first United States librarian to be jailed for refusing to share information as a matter of conscience.

U.S. attorneys obtained an indictment charging the Harrisburg Seven with conspiracy to kidnap Kissinger and to bomb steam tunnels. Former Attorney General Ramsey Clark led the defense team for their trial during the spring months of 1972. Clark used a then relatively untested theory of scientific jury selection—the use of demographic factors to identify unfavorable jurors.

Unconventionally, he didn't call any witnesses in his clients' defense, including the defendants themselves. He reasoned that the jury was sympathetic to his Catholic clients and that that sympathy would be ruined by their testimony that they'd burned their draft cards. After nearly 60 hours of deliberations, the jury remained hung and the defendants were freed.

Douglas testified that he transmitted transcribed letters between the defendants, which the prosecution used as evidence of a conspiracy among them. Several of Douglas' former girlfriends testified at the trial that he acted not just as an informer, but also as a catalyst and agent provocateur for the group's plans.

There were minor convictions for a few of the defendants, based on smuggling mail into the prison; most of those were overturned on appeal.

Pledging Allegiance to Peace

July-August 2011

www.utne.com/Politics/Pledging-Allegiance-To-Peace.aspx

by Tony White, from Friends Journal

Our country is the world, our countrymen are all mankind. We love the land of our nativity only as we love all other lands. The interests, rights, liberties of American citizens are no more dear to us than are those of the whole human race. Hence, we can allow no appeal to patriotism, to revenge any national insult or injury.

—William Lloyd Garrison, abolitionist, “Declaration of Sentiments Adopted by the Peace Convention” (1838)

Most Americans take for granted that patriotism is a virtue. We are taught at home, in school, and by the media that love for and pride in our country rank among our highest moral duties. We are exhorted to patriotism daily by flags, songs, holidays, monuments, marches, speeches, images, and literature that extol the glory of our country. So deeply ingrained is our belief in the value of patriotism that even to question it is taboo. When someone criticizes our personal sense of patriotism—always a ready-made tactic for trashing peace activists—it stings, and makes us very defensive. We think they just don’t understand what true patriotism is all about, and perhaps we are moved to buy a bumper sticker reading “Peace Is Patriotic.”

But is patriotism peaceful? Based on my life experience, studies, intellect, and conscience, I am led undeniably to the conviction that patriotism is immoral: It is selfish and irrational, hinders our judgment, divides the world, contributes to militarization, causes war, and contradicts the teachings of Jesus.

Patriotism is an attitude of favoritism toward “my country” and “my people.” If egotism or pridefulness toward oneself is a vice, then patriotism or pridefulness toward one’s particular country is likewise deplorable.

Patriotism clouds our judgment; it hinders objectivity and detracts from our ability to assess political situations rationally. Patriotism biases us toward our country’s perspective, encumbering our desire and ability to consider outside perspectives. Patriotism breeds conformity and closed-mindedness. Furthermore, it makes us overly trusting of those in power over us, and susceptible to abuses of that power.

This is evidenced by what happened after 9/11: Americans were swept up in a wave of feverish patriotism and fell in line with a corrupt agenda. As a prime example, take the USA Patriot Act—who would dare oppose such a noble-sounding ordinance? Never mind that it involves gratuitous violations of civil liberties; what freedom-loving U.S. citizen does not also love warrantless surveillance, wiretapping, search and seizure, as well as detention and no-fly lists? Clearly, the act was given that title because politicians know the efficacy of patriotism for manipulating public opinion.

That patriotic propaganda measures are increased during wartime should be reason enough to give us pause concerning patriotism. Notice also how many flags are displayed for U.S. holidays associated with war—Presidents Day (celebrating the birthdays of Washington and Lincoln, both notorious for leading war efforts), Memorial Day, Independence Day (celebrating the day war was declared by the colonists on Britain), and Veterans Day—and how few flags appear on other federal holidays: Martin Luther King Jr. Day (honoring a winner of the Nobel Peace Prize), Thanksgiving (purportedly celebrating gratitude and cooperation between European colonists and Native Americans), and Labor Day. The bond between patriotism and war is not even covert.

I personally experienced the intoxication of patriotism. Right after 9/11 (before I was a Quaker), I supported the Iraq war. I believed that the cause was just. Looking back, I realize that I was living in a fog, basing my opinions on fleeting, vague notions. Because I heard something about weapons of mass destruction (WMDs), I was able to watch “shock and awe” approvingly, naively envisioning the United States speedily wiping out terrorism by force across the world. I cringe when I recall arguing with someone publicly that the United States should ignore the United Nations’ caution about entering Iraq.

When it became clear that Iraq had no WMDs or links to 9/11, and that the war was based on lies, I felt betrayed. I also felt guilty for my own poor judgment—how could I have been so gullible? Grappling with this, I eventually saw that I had fallen prey to the stupefying effects of patriotism.

In kindergarten, I learned a mysterious morning chanting ritual in which one robotically pledges one’s life to a flag and to one nation under God, “invisible” (as my child’s mind heard it) with liberty and justice for all. Now I understand what I was saying. And I understand that people, and certainly Christians, should not pledge at all, certainly not to a material object (an idol), certainly not to one particular nation among many, and certainly not to something under God. I also know now that no kingdom save an invisible one could truly have liberty and justice for all.

I remember getting emotional about the war song known as “The Star-Spangled Banner.” In seventh grade, I even won third place in an essay contest on the topic “What does patriotism mean to me?” I virtually equated America with freedom—faulty reasoning on which the essay was based and for which I was rewarded.

Many of us are taught in school that “America is the greatest country in the world,” while the darker aspects of our history are largely ignored or glossed over. So how could I not view the United States as innocent, and anyone who opposes it as unreasonable and even evil? How could I not assume that whatever the United States does is destined to work and that the president always speaks the truth?

Patriotism divides the world. Anarchist Emma Goldman, in a 1908 speech on patriotism and militarization, said: “Patriotism assumes that our globe is divided into little spots, each one surrounded by an iron gate.” Patriotism separates us from other little spots and builds pride in our us-ness, setting societies against each other under the pretext that to protect us we must be prepared to kill any of them. If all countries are encouraged to be prideful toward themselves, how can we be surprised when war occurs? Further, patriotism has a tendency to result in nativism, for example, in Nazi Germany and in discrimination against immigrants in the United States.

For patriotism to be a universal virtue would be illogical. If it were virtuous for every human being to be patriotic toward the same country, then this—while crude—would be self-consistent. But if it is right for the English to be patriotic toward England and the French toward France, then when England and France have a conflict of interest, morality will conflict with itself. Two leaders will disagree and both will be right, and two armies will clash and both will be doing the right thing.

Patriotism is a major factor contributing to militarism and war. It is the primary force that glorifies combat, and nothing contributes to the propagation of war more than military hero worship. As long as the view prevails that there is no more glorious, honorable, and heroic service than to train to become a killing machine, there will be war, as any leaders who fancy an attack will have legions of glory-seeking yes-men at their mercy. Military hero worship is what makes it possible for a decent person to murder on command in good conscience. Albert Einstein wrote in The World as I See It in 1931, “The greatest obstacle to international order is that monstrously exaggerated spirit of nationalism which also goes by the fair-sounding but misused name of patriotism.”

Patriotism is contrary to the teachings of Christ. In the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus declared, “You have heard that it was said ‘Love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’ But I say to you, love your enemies.”

In the context of Hebrew law, here referenced by Jesus, neighbor meant “fellow Israelite,” that is, compatriot. Thus, enemy, used in contrast to this, would likely be understood to refer to a national enemy. Jesus was demanding that no distinction be made between countryman and foreigner.

In fact, allegiance to any current government is consent to violence. Governmental power is rooted in violence—in the military, as well as the armed police. No one sincerely committed to the principle of nonviolence can in good conscience give consent to an institution based on military force. We can contrive many rationalizations for the supposed necessity of government, but this contradiction cannot be denied. The United States Constitution, purporting to be the “supreme law of the land,” grants the government the power to declare war.

We Christians are called to recognize a different law as supreme—since we cannot serve two masters, let us not be servants of men, but let our sole allegiance be to the Kingdom of God, a kingdom not of the worldly kind and so one that does not require its subjects to fight for it, for we have only one Master and are all brothers and sisters.

Leo Tolstoy, in his 1896 essay “Patriotism or Peace” (how’s that for a bumper sticker slogan!), writes, “If Christianity really gives peace, and we really want peace, patriotism is a survival from barbarous times, which must not only not be evoked and educated, as we now do, but which must be eradicated by all means, by preaching, persuasion, contempt, and ridicule.”

In “Patriotism and Government,” published in 1900, Tolstoy writes: “It is immoral because, instead of recognizing himself as the son of God, as Christianity teaches us, or at least as a free man, who is guided by his reason, every man, under the influence of patriotism, recognizes himself as the son of his country and the slave of his government, and commits acts which are contrary to his reason and to his conscience.”

The usual rebuttal to condemnation of patriotism is that some patriotism is bad, but not all; only excessive, imperialistic, blind, narrow-minded, exclusivist patriotism, go the many variations—but not our “healthy” patriotism.

Patriotism in its purest form—from which all others derive—is the desire for one’s country to claim glory and power over all others due to its people’s superiority. To say that excessive patriotism is bad, but that there is a “golden mean” of patriotism, is to say that excessively promoting violence is bad, but moderately promoting it is good. Non-imperialistic patriotism still implies acceptance of past imperialism. What country was not founded on or upheld by unjust conquest?

And yet we have no reservations in our allegiance. Patriotism itself blinds and narrows our minds; it is essentially a bias. This supposed “clear-sighted” patriotism doesn’t exist, unless perhaps for self-interested manipulation of others, because to see patriotism clearly is to see its pernicious implications. If we remove all that is exclusivist about patriotism, nothing remains.

Most people will grant that my argument holds in the context of despotism. Some, however, may object that since our government is a democracy, the right to dissent is its distinctive mark and, in fact, what makes it worthy of patriotism in the first place. It follows that it is our patriotic duty to question authority, and that, as the late social historian Howard Zinn said, “Dissent is the highest form of patriotism.”

Given the First Amendment, I can understand why someone might believe that dissent is patriotic, and I used to. But consider this statement by linguist and political activist Noam Chomsky: “The smart way to keep people passive and obedient is to strictly limit the spectrum of acceptable opinion, but allow very lively debate within that spectrum—even encourage the more critical and dissident views. That gives people the sense that there’s free thinking going on, while all the time the presuppositions of the system are being reinforced by the limits put on the range of the debate.”

In public discourse, there is a sense that we can disagree as we may, if only in the spirit of patriotism. Thus, it seems as though dissent needs patriotism to legitimize it. So while we may dissent on particular issues, a prerequisite is assent to the system as a whole—a system rooted in violence. Each time we patriotically dissent, we buy into this violent system all over again. Perhaps nothing reinforces the violent status quo more than patriotic dissent: It implies that whatever our disagreements, the one premise that even the most radical dissident dare not question is rule by violence.

To break from patriotism may seem shocking and painful. But I daresay that many people in the United States reading this do not really love the United States, though we think we do. What we really love is an idealized version of the United States. We love the values of equality and liberty in the Declaration of Independence. But these values did not originate in 1776; they existed long before, and will continue long after the United States is gone. And the actual United States has never really lived up to these ideals.

Inequality and lack of freedom were written into the U.S. Constitution with the institution of slavery, and have since continued through various forms of oppression. To this, we might retort that what we love is the tremendous courage and perseverance of the people of the United States in overcoming these injustices. But why give credit to the United States for what resides in the human heart? Have not people from all corners of the earth exhibited this same spirit? Most great reforms are initially opposed by governments, and thus much of the people’s perseverance has actually been subject to persecution.

Some assert that patriotism keeps countries together. But why presuppose that this is good, that the status quo ought to be maintained? That this is even offered as a response reveals the depth of our indoctrination and directly reflects the view that the powerful have always endeavored to inculcate in the masses through patriotism—that whatever upholds the current establishment is good and necessary. If patriotism alone were keeping a country together, it would be an artificial basis propping up an outlived tradition. Political establishments should be maintained only as long as they are just and beneficial. A sound social organization should be able to self-persist organically, rendering patriotism superfluous at best.

If we want to achieve world peace and a form of society not based on violence, the time for change is now. But if we eradicate patriotism, what unifying principle can replace it? One answer is humanism. It unites not a particular group, but all people.

If humanism proves too weak a sentiment, let us embrace universal love. This can happen when we realize our connection to others and the underlying unity of all things; when we experience the Divine inherent in ourselves and recognize this same divine essence in others; when, as Quaker founder George Fox wrote, we “walk cheerfully over the world, answering that of God in every one.”

Rusty cart in the ashy remains of the fire.

Very sad.

Two recent US Presidents, who both have the dubious distinction of having been impeached by the House of Representatives.

Bill Clinton, who served two well-regarded terms in the 1990s, was impeached by the House for lying about an extramarital affair. However, with the impeachment being politically motivated, the Senate trial failed to convict Clinton, and he remained in office to fulfill two terms. Clinton was the very first President I ever voted for.

Richard Nixon, who was elected in 1968 and re-elected by a landslide in 1972, was involved in the Watergate scandal, where he had wiretapped the campaigns of his political opponents without just cause. The charges snowballed, and rather than facing an impeachment process that was certain to remove him from office anyway, Nixon resigned in August 1974.

Only one other President in US history was ever impeached - 17th President, Andrew Johnson, who had succeeded Abraham Lincoln after his assassination. Johnson survived the impeachment, as his Senate trial ended in one vote short of the two-thirds required for conviction and removal.

A total of 145,392 calls had been recorded for the year.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cincinnati_Bell

The Watergate complex is an office-apartment-hotel complex built in 1967 in northwest Washington, D.C., best known for being the site of burglaries that led to the Watergate scandal and the resignation of President Richard Nixon

Location

The Watergate complex is a superblock bounded on the north by Virginia Avenue, on the east by New Hampshire Avenue, on the south by F Street, and on the west by the Rock Creek and Potomac Parkway. It is in the Foggy Bottom neighborhood overlooking the Potomac River, adjacent to the Kennedy Center and the embassy of Saudi Arabia. The nearest Metro station is Foggy Bottom-GWU.

History

The Watergate complex was developed by the Italian firm Società Generale Immobiliare, which purchased the 10 acres which constitute the plot of land on the defunct Chesapeake and Ohio Canal in the early 1960s for 10 million US Dollars. Italian architect Luigi Moretti designed the six buildings on the site: a hotel, two office buildings, three apartment buildings and a retail center.

Individual buildings at the Watergate

The Watergate Hotel is located at 2650 Virginia Avenue NW. It has 250 guest rooms and 146 suites. In 2004, the hotel was purchased by a company planning to turn it into luxury co-ops.

The two Watergate Office Buildings are at 600 New Hampshire Avenue NW and 2600 Virginia Avenue NW.

In 1972, the Democratic National Committee had its headquarters on the sixth floor of the 11-story 2600 Virginia Avenue building. On May 28, 1972, a team of burglars working for Nixon's re-election campaign put wiretaps and took photos in and near the DNC chairman's office. The wiretaps were monitored from Room 723 of the Howard Johnson's Motor Lodge hotel across the street at 2601 Virginia Avenue NW. (The hotel is now owned by the George Washington University, although no longer used as a undergraduate dormitory.) During a second burglary on June 17, 1972, to replace a malfunctioning "bug" and collect more information, five burglars were arrested and the Watergate scandal began to unfold.

The Watergate Office Building was sold in 2005 by Trizec Properties to Bentley Forbes, a Los Angeles-based real estate investment firm run by Fred Wehba, for $86.5 million. The complex, consisting of the buildings at 2500, 2600, and 2650 Virginia Ave. NW and 600 and 700 New Hampshire Ave. NW, was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on October 21, 2005.

The three Watergate Apartment buildings total some 600 residential units. Past occupants have included Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Bob and Elizabeth Dole, Monica Lewinsky, Betty Currie, and Paul O'Neill. Current Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice now lives in the Watergate.

There is a small (63,000 sq. ft. / 5900 m²) retail center which offers a Safeway supermarket in the basement level and several upscale shops and restaurants at street level.

Monica Lewinsky moves out of Watergate

WASHINGTON (AllPolitics, October 14, 1998)

Monica Lewinsky is moving out of her Watergate residence and apologizing to neighbors for any trouble her newfound media attention may have caused them.

Lewinsky placed a printed note under the doors of fellow residents of the Watergate South this week informing them of her departure.

The location of her new residence, which has not been confirmed, is believed to be away from the Washington area.

The posh downtown condominium complex has several other well-known tenants, including former Republican presidential nominee Bob Dole and his wife.

"As I depart 700 New Hampshire, I wanted to apologize for the inconveniences of the past nine months. To those of you who have passed along your kind words, I greatly appreciated your support during this difficult time; and I thank you. I hope you all know how very sorry I am that so much attention was brought to the building," she wrote.

Lewinsky signed the notes "Monica" by hand, her spokeswoman Judy Smith said.

Watergate: The name that branded more than a building

Washington Business Journal -

June 14, 2002

by Mike Livingston Contributing Writer

Some buildings in Washington earn a place in history by housing future presidents, some by reflecting influential architects and the growth of a world capital, and some just by standing there as governments, industries, even centuries come and go.

The mixed-use complex next to the old canal "water gate" at the mouth of Rock Creek owes its place in history to a little piece of masking tape that sealed, 30 years ago this month, the lock on a door and the fate of a president.

It was Suite 600 of the Watergate Hotel that burglars on the White House payroll entered around 2 a.m. June 17, 1972, to gather information about President Nixon's opponents. The Democratic National Committee (DNC) had leased the suite.

The ensuing scandal led to the imprisonment of top West Wingers and the only presidential resignation -- and it made the name "Watergate" synonymous with political scandal and investigative journalism.

Despite what "Watergate" has come to mean in the popular mind, it remains for many others what its developers intended it to be: a prestigious address for offices, shops, restaurants, residents and hotel guests.

Watergate Towne

The five curving towers of "Watergate Towne" were the city's first major international real estate development -- the vision of Hungarian-born developer Nicholas Salgo and his Italian firm, Societa Generale Immobiliare (SGI), based in Rome and owned in part by the Vatican.

The Italian Count di Carpegna was a project architect on SGI's staff, and the Countess de Rochefort was a sales representative for the Watergate East apartment cooperative. (The countess once commissioned Avignon Frères, the now-defunct French bakery in Adams Morgan, to make a 50-pound cake with 13 layers in the likeness of the 13-story building.)

SGI bought the 10-acre site from Washington Gas for $7 million, thinking it would soon be served by a freeway. The Washington Star, whose archives provided much of the information for this article, noted in 1962 the plans called for "curvilinear buildings designed to conform with the curving Inner Loop Expressway at this point."

When models of the futuristic high-rises were unveiled by 1961, critics and zoning commissioners said the complex would ruin the waterfront and overshadow the performing arts center nearby, which was then on the drawing boards and would later be named after President Kennedy. The National Capital Planning Commission, according to a 1961 report in the Star, questioned "whether the site should be developed at all."

The Star thought so. A May 1962 editorial stated: "It is true that the so-called `curvilinear' design is at variance with most commercial architecture in Washington. But in our opinion the result, which places a premium on public open space and garden-like surroundings, and which proposes a quality of housing that would rank with the finest in the city, would be a distinct asset."

Later that month, the White House urged the developer to accept a 90-foot height limit instead of the planned 130 feet.

Salgo and SGI's chief architect, Gabor Acs, flew to New York City with professor Luigi Moretti of the University of Rome to defend their designs in a special meeting with the federal Commission of Fine Arts, whose approval is required for any construction in the "Monumental Core." In the end, SGI was allowed to build 25 percent of the complex to 13 stories.

Moretti, who had designed the Montreal Stock Exchange and Rome's Olympic Village for the 1960 Games, served as a consulting architect. The Washington architecture firm of Corning, Moore, Elmore & Fisher also worked with the SGI staff architects. The builder was Magazine Bros. Construction.

'White House West'

Work began in August 1963 with the groundbreaking for the headquarters of Riverview Realty, the leasing agent for the 200,000 square feet of office space planned in the complex.

The first tower, Watergate East, was believed to be the first major construction job to make significant use of computers. A forerunner of modern computer-aided drafting (CAD) technology was employed in plans for 8,000 square feet of irregular windows and 2,200 irregular wall panels.

In 1964, Jim Roberts of Magazine Bros. told the Star: "We had to face the fact that there are no continuous straight lines anywhere -- horizontally on the floors or vertically on the facade. Not only were there many different curves on every floor, but no two floors had a facade exactly alike."

Watergate East was dedicated in October 1965.

Earlier that year, the Star told future owners of tower's 238 co-ops that the complex "will feature an elaborate electronic security system" including closed-circuit televisions, two-way radios and a 24-hour security staff. "What all of this means," the paper noted, "is that intruders will have difficulty getting onto the grounds undetected."

Peoples Drug (now CVS) and Safeway opened stores in the courtyard in 1965 that are still there today, along with a bakery, liquor store and other courtyard shops.

Watergate West, the second residential building, was started in June 1967 and completed within two years.

Landscape architect Boris Timchenko planted flowering trees and filled 150 planters. Tiers of fountains in the courtyard provide the sound of waterfalls. Townhouse-style units line the first two floors; top-floor units feature private rooftop terraces and fireplaces.

In June 1969, the Star reported the co-ops were especially popular with high-ranking members of the new administration: "Watergate's two completed apartment buildings have become widely known as a magnet that pulls many Nixon aides home."

With a quarter of the Cabinet -- Attorney General John Mitchell, Commerce Secretary Maurice Stans and Transportation Secretary John Volpe -- living at Watergate, along with dozens of White House staffers including presidential secretary Rose Mary Woods, the complex was nicknamed "Administration Arms" and "White House West."

Showcase for a Scandal

The hotel opened in 1967 and featured an upscale restaurant, the Roman Terrace. The DNC and other office tenants leased space in the hotel as early as April 1967.

The Watergate 600 office tower, specially zoned for nonprofit and professional occupancy, signed its first tenant, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, in February 1971, and its first "major" tenant soon afterward: the Manpower Evaluation & Development Institute, which leased the whole eighth floor.

In October 1972, a strip of fashion boutiques and jewelers opened under the name Les Champs. The 13,000 square feet of retail drew tenants such as Gucci, Yves St. Laurent and, according to the Star, "the only boutique in this country which exclusively features Soviet-made goods."

Manager Henry Winston warned Les Champs retailers not to exploit the scandal that had erupted from the DNC break-in; however, by the fall of 1973, the shops drew heavy traffic from curious tourists and scandal buffs. Winston asked five shops to leave within their first year, he told the paper, because "the appearance and type of their merchandise was not up to standards or their volume was too low, and none of them seemed improvable."

Other break-ins, other scandals

The first Watergate break-in was a residential burglary, in 1969, in which jewelry and a papal medal were stolen from an apartment. Ironically, the victim was Woods, the Nixon secretary who would later be accused of erasing 18 and a half minutes of incriminating evidence from one of the president's secret tapes.

In 1973, burglars stole $950 from an office suite leased by the Italian Embassy.

And in 1975, perhaps the nation's most influential jurist below the Supreme Court -- Chief Judge David L. Bazelon of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit -- and his wife returned from Christmas vacation to find $16,000 worth of jewelry missing from their apartment.

For many residents, the real Watergate scandal was the allegedly shoddy construction of the 143-unit Watergate West apartment building. In 1972, residents sued SGI for $1.5 million, citing water damage in 40 percent of the units, plumbing problems in 22 percent, malfunctioning kitchen appliances in 45 percent, and inadequate air conditioning.

SGI filed a counterclaim of $4 million for "malicious embarrassment" and, after five years of litigation, paid $600,000 in a settlement.

Toward the end of the century, Watergate showed up again in stories about a scandal-ridden presidency: It was the home of Clinton White House intern Monica Lewinsky.

'A delicious irony'

The Watergate's original developer, Salgo, partnered with Chicago-based Continental Illinois Properties to buy SGI's stake for $49 million in 1977. Two years later, the company sold its interest to subsidiaries of the British Coal Board Pension Fund; Salgo kept his own shares until 1986 and then sold to the coal board.

In what The Washington Post called "a delicious irony for the father of the Watergate," in 1989 the Bush administration tapped Salgo, a former diplomat, for a task force to dispose of the U.S. embassy in Moscow because it was infested with electronic bugs.

Several real estate transfers in recent years have resulted in new, multiple owners of the buildings in the Watergate complex. The hotel now bears a Swissotel flag.

The apartments still attract VIP residents, notably Bob and Elizabeth Dole and Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsberg.

The Watergate's most historically significant office tenant, however, moved out long ago. The DNC, within weeks after the break-in, transferred the bulk of its staff and files to George McGovern's presidential campaign headquarters at 19th and K streets NW. The committee kept a minimal presence in the infamous suite -- which was allegedly bugged again four months later -- until its lease expired in January 1973. The 16,000 square feet of history were leased to the National Academy of Sciences in August 1974.

The BLF strikes again at 14th & Valencia in San Francisco

I thought that I'd bring the saga that is my towbar to a final close by wiring up the electrics today.

Depending on the car, this can be complex or easy, and my car is blessed with conventional wiring rather than multiplexed bus systems.

The thing is, I've connected with Scotchloks (well, actually they're a cheap cloned version that Maplin call 'snap lock connectors' for copyright reasons I've no doubt). These clever little things are IDC connectors (that's insulation displacement connector I think) which like a computer ribbon cable or ethernet plug 'bites' into the cable to access conductivity. This means that you can tap into an existing wire without cutting it.

The drawback is that they're not great at high currents, and they're sometimes unreliable. Enthusiastic hobbyists swear by them - automotive electricians swear at them.

My old man blames all the world's ills on these things, from poverty, through terrorism to famine.

If he caught me using them on my own car I'd get a well earned tongue lashing, so shhhhhh. If you don't tell him, and he doesn't check my flickr page, then if I destroy these two we should be home and dry. ;)

Note: Things are changing fast even as you're browsing from page to page, so the numbers below are likely never 100% accurate.

As of a few minutes ago, the top 30 questions accounted for 10.5% of all 119,230 votes (somehow the table below is missing one line).

Still early, but might look like we're observing the same pattern we saw earlier where a voting system preferred those entries that had been submitted early and attracted an early lead in votes.

Also, at a guestimated 15 words per question (and a reading speed of 250 words per minute), it would take about 100 minutes to consume all 1,606 questions. Not as bad as what we saw here, but still quite a challenge once we hit several thousand questions.

The November election of 1984 appeared to be critical for the Rajneeshees cult under "sex guru" Bhagwan Rajneesh (through his spokeswoman Ma Anand Sheela) located in Big Muddy Ranch (renamed Rajneeshpuram) in the middle of Eastern Oregon. Hostility between locals and the cult had reached the point that lawsuits had been filed and armed confrontations were frequently occurring. The Rajneeshees had previously used their numbers to their advantage in the low-population expanses; when Antelope, Oregon denied one of their business permits, the Rajneeshees took political control of the town-and for good measure they renamed it "Rajneesh". Now they hoped to apply that same tactic to the county both Rajneeshpuram and Antelope were located in, Wasco County. However Wasco County was large enough that hostile locals still outnumbered the cultists. After a failed attempt to boost their numbers by busing in homeless to vote (who were then abandoned into rural Oregon) the leadership (more on this later) decided on voter suppression instead-by mass food poisoning. There was only one city in predominantly rural Wasco County, and that was the City of The Dalles on the Columbia River.

Around September 1984 either Ma Anand Sheela or her lieutenant Diane Yvonne Onang entered this Taco Time restaurant, carrying a concealed pouch. This contained Salmonella enterica, purchased from a medical supply company and cultured in the commune. When two Wasco County commissioners had visited Rajneeshpuram, they had been given water laced with the bacteria, causing them both to be hospitalized with life-threatening illness. Now Sheela and Onang took the bacteria to the rest of Wasco County. They secretly punctured the pouch, and spread the "salsa" over the salad bar. The effort was then repeated in the salad bars of 9 other restaurants in The Dalles over the next few weeks. People soon began falling ill from gastroenteritis, diarrhea, fever, chills, nausea, vomiting, headaches, abdominal pain, and bloody stool. Eventually 751 people became badly ill and 45 people were hospitalized after eating from the salad bars-including a 2 year old and and 87 year old. Thankfully everyone survived this, the first, and to date, largest biological attack in United States history.

Culturing quickly found that all of the illnesses were linked to S. enterica, and all of the restaurants were closed. While the outbreak was originally blamed on pool worker hygiene, the locals were suspicious enough and angry enough to mobilize en mass for the November elections, and the Rajnesshee candidates lost in a landslide.

While Oregon Congressman James Weaver blamed the outbreak at the Rajnesshees a few months later, it would not be until almost a year after the attack when Rajneesh himself broke his 3.5 year vow of silence to blame a plethora of crimes against Sheela and her supporters, who had just fled to Europe, were further investigations preformed. Oregon Attorney General Dave Frohnmayer obtained search warrants, and found horrific evidence of the validity of many of those claims; Dr. Skeels found glass vials containing Salmonella "bactrol disks" which were matched to the stricken from the Dalles. There was evidence of the cult researching using Salmonella typhi, which is a far more fatal species compared to Salmonella enterica. There was additional evidence of development of chemical weapons, explosives and other biological weapons, a mass wiretapping operation running throughout Rajneeshpuram, including Rajneesh's trailer, and an aborted plot to murder the United States Attorney for the District of Oregon, Charles Turner. There was also discussed (but never enacted) plots to bomb the Wasco County courthouse or launch a biological attack on Portland's water supply.

Things finally reached their climax. David Knapp, the Mayor of Rajneeshpuram, turned state evidence, claiming that Sheela had left a recorded message from the guru: saying that "if it was necessary to do things to preserve [his] vision, then do it," and that if murder was necessary, "not to worry". Amidst a leak of a police/National Guard raid to arrest Rajneesh, the guru fled his namesake city via his Learjet 35 on October 27, 1985, on the way to Bermuda. He was quietly arrested the next day while refueling in Charlotte, North Carolina on 35 counts of deliberate violations of immigration laws.

As part of a plea bargain, Rajneesh plead guilty to two counts of making false statements to immigration officials, receiving a ten-year suspended sentence and a fine of US$400,000 before being deported to India and banned from re-entering the United States for five years. Sheela and Puja were arrested in West Germany the next day and extradited back to the United States charged with attempted murder of Rajneesh's personal physician, first-degree assault for poisoning Judge William Hulse, second-degree assault for poisoning The Dalles Commissioner Raymond Matthews, and product tampering for the poisonings in The Dalles, as well as wiretapping and immigration offenses. They were found guilty of all charges, Sheela being sentenced to 20 years for all the charges served concurrently, Puja 15 years.

With its leadership in prison, the Rajneeshee Movement collapsed. In 1985 the non-cultists regained control of "Rajneesh" and changed its name back to Antelope. Rajneeshpuram was all but abandoned by 1987. The dramatic saga of Oregon and the Rajneeshees finally was over.

As of 2018, this Taco Time, believed to be the first of the 10 biological attacks done on restaurants in The Dalles, is the only one that remains open from that time.

The Dalles, Oregon

...and takes a big old step to the center, Clinton-style. Yuck. As a big fan of the separation of church and state, his proposal to expand Bush's government funding for faith-based programs has me particularly pissed off.

Obama does say he won't allow govt-funded religious groups to discriminate based on religion in hiring, but he said nothing about sexual orientation--so does that mean he's ok with funding organizations like the Salvation Army that outright refuse to hire gay folks?

Dialogue: Government funding for faith-based programs is awesome! Wiretapping is awesome! I'm a patriot! John McCain's a patriot! Have I mentioned that I support the death penalty? I like guns!
