I took this photo after taking the shots of Debbie Gibson and Wil Wheaton. I may not post them all, as I was trying to get enough coverage to see what photos worked best. Both people moved around a lot, especially Debbie. By that I mean she kept turning her head and changing her expression, so I wanted to ensure I got something that looked right.
Debbie Gibson was discussing with Wil Wheaton her new book, "Eternally Electric" at the L.A. Times Festival of Books, held annually on the USC campus.
I still haven't found this video on MS NOW (which is on YouTube), so I have no idea what Soboroff and the guy in the red shirt were talking about. By the time I was in a good position to attempt to eavesdrop the interview ended, Soboroff shook the man's hand, and then Soboroff turned to his camera crew to tell whoever was in the NYC offices what what happening here. After this I didn't see Soboroff or his crew anywhere. They didn't come over to City Hall (which wasn't that far) and get coverage of the crowds gathering. His standing at the foot of the City Hall steps with dozens of people behind him holding signs would have made a great backdrop, especially by 2:00 PM the sun made a great key light for everyone.
Since it was the guy in red being interviewed by Soboroff, the camera crew emphasized the two-shot where he was seen fully, with Soboroff seen only partly. But the back of him wasn't dominating the frame either. When a reporter has done this enough they know where to stand to get a two-shot interview, while the crew (or the cameraman) know where to stand to get the best vantage point. As I've pointed out before, this is live TV, so everything has to be right.
Although I still haven't seen the replay of this interview on YouTube yet, I'm assuming that once Soboroff was done with his interview with this guy, he turned to face the camera directly. While he is simply looking into the lens, the viewers at home see him looking at THEM, the viewer, which has been a time-honored tradition since the advent of TV news, giving a personal sense to the broadcast. And he all has to do it off-the-cuff, with no cue cards or teleprompters between him and the lens. It's easy to hold up your phone and rattle off a bunch of stuff, but a real professional like Jacob Soboroff makes it look easy.
This is a frame capture from HD video, using the Canon EOS Rebel T6 camera, with the Canon 18-55mm zoom lens.
Here we have a better view of the witch, where she isn't saturated with red light coming from the red LED light on the ceiling.
In the early part of the witch's act, she pulled out a rather convincing looking breast, which you can see in her left hand. There was some joking about this being a "witch's tit," but I'd have to go back over the video to find out what she said exactly. It certainly had nothing to do with any cold weather, as it was both hot and stuffy in the Old Towne Pub, so much so it was wreaking havoc on my batteries. They ran down faster and there were risks of the camera overheating. Hopefully, by the time of the Doo Dah Parade (November 19), it should be a bit cooler.
