The Winter Solstice is here, which is always welcome, as the days begin getting longer and Spring is getting closer. Nice!

Today the sun stops (solstitium) moving further away from the North Pole and begins arriving earlier and setting later each day.
I prefer more light then dark so appreciate the arrival of this signal day and event.
Here in Spokane the sun sets today at 3:59. :-(( Our sun rises at 7:34. We are on the eastern edge of the Pacific time zone so we lose the sun much sooner than those on the western side of the zone. While long nights are good for sleeping they are not good for getting outdoor chores done, or for photography.
Much prefer the longer days.

Today is the first day of winter and thousands of people will have their cameras pointing to the night sky, for the "Christmas Star"🌟. Jupiter and Saturn will appear so closely aligned in our sky that they will look like a double planet. These two planets are coming closer together than they have been since the Middle Ages, and it's happening just in time for Christmas. Interesting and historic night. Sadly we'll have rain tonight in our area, so I'll see your photos of this event tomorrow.

Let the longer days begin!
Earth’s axis has an around 23-degree tilt and without this, not only would our planet not have a Winter Solstice, it would not have seasons at all.
Without the axial tilt, the sun would remain directly above the Equator, and everywhere on the planet would receive the same amount of light the year through.
Scientists are not entirely sure how the tilt occurred, but they think that billions of years ago, as the solar system was taking shape, the Earth was subject to violent collisions that caused the axis to tilt.
And brings us that much closer to Spring!

We live here and I love this magic atmosphere on our snowy field. You can see our house at right.
Winter is one of my favourite season of the year but...with snow.

(In full disclosure, my husband lighted the match multiple times while I pressed the shutter release cable well in advance of one match lighting the subject. And I borrowed his gear. We had an enlightening, fun time this afternoon.)

I have long wanted to try to capture a flame without blowing the highlights. I followed instructions in the link below, but still had to modify shutter speed. I’m not satisfied, and will keep trying. Not only looks different on all monitors, I blew the inner highlights. Here’s the link

Winter Solstice day last year was a frosty winter delight and I've realised that I only shared one image from it so here's another.
It's been a great year out with my camera, although challenging in other ways!
