Today the sun stops (solstitium) moving further away from the North Pole and begins arriving earlier and setting later each day.
I prefer more light then dark so appreciate the arrival of this signal day and event.
Here in Spokane the sun sets today at 3:59. :-(( Our sun rises at 7:34. We are on the eastern edge of the Pacific time zone so we lose the sun much sooner than those on the western side of the zone. While long nights are good for sleeping they are not good for getting outdoor chores done, or for photography.
Much prefer the longer days.

And remember, after today the periods of daylight will become longer and longer. This tree is where I saw and photographed a Snowy Owl several times last winter. Hoping to see one here again, soon! This image was actually made last winter while I was out hunting for Snowy Owls.
Today is the first day of winter and thousands of people will have their cameras pointing to the night sky, for the "Christmas Star"🌟. Jupiter and Saturn will appear so closely aligned in our sky that they will look like a double planet. These two planets are coming closer together than they have been since the Middle Ages, and it's happening just in time for Christmas. Interesting and historic night. Sadly we'll have rain tonight in our area, so I'll see your photos of this event tomorrow.

Autumn is truly here, it's one of my favourite seasons watching nature's colour palette changing.

Earth’s axis has an around 23-degree tilt and without this, not only would our planet not have a Winter Solstice, it would not have seasons at all.
Without the axial tilt, the sun would remain directly above the Equator, and everywhere on the planet would receive the same amount of light the year through.
Scientists are not entirely sure how the tilt occurred, but they think that billions of years ago, as the solar system was taking shape, the Earth was subject to violent collisions that caused the axis to tilt.
And brings us that much closer to Spring!

Today is Winter solstice, the shortest day of the year in the Northern hemisphere. Finally, days will get longer again, something I've been looking forward to all the more this autumn/winter because it's the darkest, dullest season we've had for many years. Since there are also only three days left until Christmas, I was searching my photo archive for something festive and sci-fi-looking. I stumbled upon a series of images that I'd taken back in December 2018 at the Christmas market nearby Berlin's TV tower (one of my city's most iconic and well-known landmarks) where you can see the TV tower's spire and its famous "ball" (which houses a rotating – slowly rotating, I should add – restaurant) behind the Christmas market's rotating Ferris wheel.
I've already uploaded one photo from this series – four years ago, so I was also hoping that most of you have forgotten about that first upload by now and this image passes as "new" ;) Well, it kind of is new, because it's not the same shot as the first image. The first image (which you can find in the first comment) has a tighter crop and the colours are different because the Ferris wheel had been illuminated in changing colours. This time, I also thought I'd leave the Ferris wheel's metal brace in the image because I thought the brace adds a "space station" look. The Ferris wheel's colour "rings" also reminded me of Saturn's rings (or of a wormhole), hence the title.
