Young man is coming out of the chilly Pacific Ocean after an invigorating swim for the annual Polar Bear Swim!
Last year, the Polar Bear Plunge was canceled due to the COVID-19. This year, the Coney Island Polar Bear Club did not cancel the plunge but would have swimmers practice safe social distancing. No gathering together ran to the water. Each individual or family group ran to the water freely. Many life guards were on duty to make sure everyone was safe. Polar Bear Plunge is a tradition to celebrate New Year. The weather in 2022 New Year was cloudy and had light rain that didn’t stop people from coming to swim and watch.
The Coney Island Polar Bear Club is the oldest winter bathing club in the United States and was founded in 1903. Their members swim every Sunday November-April at 1pm. Membership is currently closed. There is no fee to participate in the frozen swimming at Coney Island, but it encourages donations & fundraising for your Plunge. All funds raised help support the local non-profits and community, including free public programming, environmental and educational programming, the arts, and more.
