Enjoy!

On my last visit to De Hoge Veluwe I actually managed to find the mouflons living there, or perhaps I should rather say they managed to find (and then elude) me because every time they appeared I didn't have my camera ready. This was the one occasion when I was able to bag a few shots of a ram before he disappeared into the undergrowth again. Unfortunately, he was quite a distance away, but I'm still rather pleased with the result.

He is a gorgeous guy who stands so proud in front of me surrounded by autumn colors. What can be more beautiful than seeing an animal so sublime? The impressive ram crossed my path in a rocky terrain tending to his flock. I was simply fascinated by this wonderful creature and how light-footed it moved in the rocks of the Swiss Alps. Rams are related to ibax, you can see that in their eyes. He doesn't shed his horns, they just grow bigger from year to year. I like this guy who hardly took any notice of me and that impresses me immensely. Hope you like him too?

Stainless steel, polished and painted; 282 x 339 x 101 cm and 90 x 142 x 48 cm

Created by the four artists of the collective "inges idee," the absurd pair of passersby—"Ghost with Dog"—offers a tongue-in-cheek reference to the history of the Spree riverbank near Berlin’s Gotzkowsky Bridge. It was at this very site in the 19th century that the industrialist Friedrich Gebauer built an empire through the bleaching and calendering of textiles. The majestic, romantically evocative weeping willow forms the perfect backdrop for these two relaxed figures, which simultaneously allude to the city’s industrial past while giving humorous form to Berlin’s digital startup hub.

Perched atop the ashlar abutments of the Gotzkowsky Bridge—originally designed by Alfred Grenander—are animal sculptures crafted in the Art Nouveau style by Walther Schmarje. These sculptures rest upon three of the bridge's corner piers: on the Charlottenburg side, they depict two fish-tailed rams, while on the Moabit side, they portray a bull. Pictured here is one of the two rams; the fourth ashlar abutment was shaped to resemble a city gate (see the image of the Gotzkowsky Bridge in the first comment section).

Nigritella rubra ssp. widderi (Widders Kohlröserl) Edelweißboden, Steiermark, Austria. The white ball on the lip has a nice structure (though not perfectly focused). Probably an egg of an insect.

In den Gärten von Blarney Castle gab es viel zu entdecken. Dieser Widder hatte es Luis und Bärbel besonders angetan.

LUIS: “Du hast doch sicherlich Hunger. Schau, ich habe schöne grüne Blätter für dich gesammelt.”

SWEETY (im Hut): “Ach hier ist es aber schön weich gepolstert, da kann ich es mir gemütlich machen.”

BÄRBEL: “Gib nur acht Sweety, dass dich Luis nicht verfüttert !”

LUIS: “Nein, da passe ich schon auf Bärbel.”

BÄRBEL:”Ich habe hier einen Farnwedel, vielleicht schmeckt ihm der noch besser ?”

Fortsetzung folgt …

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
There was much to discover in the gardens of Blarney Castle. Luis and Bärbel were particularly taken with this ram.
LUIS: ‘You must be hungry. Look, I've collected some lovely green leaves for you.’
SWEETY (in the hat): ‘Oh, it's so soft and cosy here, I can make myself comfortable.’
BÄRBEL: ‘Just make sure Luis doesn't feed you, Sweety !’
LUIS: ‘No, I'll take care of that, Bärbel.’
BÄRBEL: ‘I have a fern frond here, maybe he'll like that even better?’
To be continued ...
..die männlichen Mufflons nennt man "Widder" und den Kopfschmuck "Schnecken" (Weidmannssprache ! )
Nigritella rubra ssp. widderi (Widders- Köhlröschen) Edelweißboden, Trofaiach, Steiermark, Austria. It was an extremely hot and dry June, and the Nigritellas on the famous Edelweissboden were really struggling. This was one of the last specimens to be found, and it had already withered.
It was cold, a little foggy and the sun was about to say goodbye for the rest of the day. Then I discovered a small group of mouflons on a mountain slope, in the centre of which were 3 particularly beautiful rams with magnificent horns.
Es war kalt, etwas neblig und die Sonne stand kurz davor, sich für den Rest des Tages wieder zu verabschieden. Da entdeckte ich auf einem Berghang eine kleine Gruppe von Mufflons, in deren Mitte sich 3 besonders schöne Widder mit prächtigen Gehörn zeigten.
Gutes und süßes neues Jahr!
Mit Rosch ha-Schanah hat eben das neue jüdische Jahr (das einzige, das ich anerkenne und in Erwägung ziehe) 5783 angefangen, und da ich leider wieder keinen Schofar zur Verfügung habe, leihe ich mir die Hörner von diesem Burschen hier aus ;)
Buon dolce anno nuovo!
Con Rosh haShanà è iniziato il nuovo anno ebraico (l'unico capodanno che riconosco) 5783, non avendo di nuovo purtroppo nessuno shofar a disposizione ho pensato di farmi prestare le corna da questo tipo qua ;)
Penguin? Aka "How I learned about the star signs": Obviously my zodiac sign is not "Penguin", but when I was in class one of primary / elementary school, at one point star signs were the next big thing. It was spring, and one classmate, whose sign was Aries, and whose birthday was close, brought up the subject, and all of a sudden everyone wanted to know each others "star sign" - and I did not even know what a "star sign" was. Now you should know that in German we do not use the Latin terms, but have all of the terms translated (Aries is "Widder", which, literally, is "ram"), and many of my classmates had "animal" star signs, so, on that day, I was wondering, whether a "star sign" was a favourite animal I could choose for myself. Next thing I was wondering about was why most of my classmates had chosen such weird animals as their personal signs. Yes, OK, one girl was a Leo, and "Löwe" (lion) was a great animal to choose. But ram, bull, ibex / goat??? Why not cat, dog, budgie or penguin? That summer, when I turned 7, my parents gave me the silver pendant that you can see in my capture, with my birthday and -year engraved on the flipside. They also gave me a bracelet with my first name on it, in case I should forget it one day ;-).
Size: 7x5 cm (2,7x1,9 inches). The lobster I found in the spare "1 Euro each" parts box at the toy store, I used bird sand for the "beach", and as background I used a postcard with my real star sign on it - which is... crab ;-) .
And if you are interested, here's a list of the German names of the star signs: Aries = Widder (ram), Taurus = Stier (bull), Gemini = Zwillinge (twins), Cancer = Krebs (crab), Leo = Löwe (lion), Virgo = Jungfrau (literally "young woman"), Libra = Waage (scales), Scorpio = Skorpion, Sagittarius = Schütze (shooter), Capricorn = Steinbock (ibex / goat), Aquarius = Wassermann (merman, literally "water man"), Pisces = Fische (fish).
A Happy Macro Monday, Everyone!
Thank you for your comments and faves, they are always highly appreciated!
A quick visit to the mouflons today. A pleasant surprise as the small herd allows to get very close today. And once again it's the rams that are photogenic.
One particularly handsome one was a real poser.
Schnell ein Besuch bei den Mufflons heute. Freudige Überraschung, denn die kleine Herde lässt heute viel Nähe zu. Und wieder sind es die Widder, die sich fotogen präsentieren.
Ein besonders Hübscher war ein echter poser.
Lop rabbit or lop-eared rabbit refers to any rabbit with ears that droop, as opposed to being carried erect. A number of rabbit breeds are characterized by such lop ears. Abnormalities in the skull of a half-lop rabbit were studied by Charles Darwin in 1868.
The defining feature of the lop rabbit is its ear carriage. Unlike the erect ear of the majority of domestic rabbit breeds, lop breeds have ears loosely drooping, with the opening of the ear facing the skull. Due to the slightly-raised cartilaginous ear base, the head of many lop rabbits (with the exception of English Lops) has a small bulge, referred to as the crown. The head of a typical lop rabbit is said to resemble that of a male sheep in profile, thus the German term for a lop rabbit (Widder, meaning Aries [the ram]), the French term (bélier, meaning ram) and the Italian term (ariete, from Latin aries).
A rabbit's ear, with its blood vessels close to the surface, is an essential thermoregulator, since rabbits cannot sweat. Longer ears are associated with warmer climates, and possibly even with a late-spring birth in cooler climates (when such rabbits are thought to develop summer ears). The additional weight of a longer or thicker ear is not always fully supported by the rest of the ear structure, resulting in ears that droop. The ears of some young lop rabbits may not achieve their full adult droop until the ear growth is finished. The ears of a lop rabbit prevent them hearing predators and maintaining a healthy body temperature. Both of these disadvantages keep them from surviving outdoor conditions.
