The Mandarin Duck (Aix galericulata) is a medium-sized perching duck famous for being widely regarded as the world's most beautiful duck.
Vibrant Appearance
Mandarin ducks display striking sexual dimorphism, meaning the males and females look completely different:
The Male (Drake):
Highly elaborate and colourful. It features distinctive orange feathers that stick up like "sails" on its back, a purple chest with white bars, orange cheek plumes, and a bright red-pink beak. After the spring breeding season, the male sheds these feathers (moults) into a dull "eclipse" plumage that looks like the female, though he keeps his bright beak.
The Female (Hen):
Intentionally dull and grey-brown to blend into surroundings. She has a grey head, a prominent white ring around her eye with a stripe trailing behind it, and a mottled underside.
Habitat and Global Distribution
Native Range:
Densely wooded wetlands, shallow lakes, and marshes across East Asia, including China, Japan, Korea, and parts of Russia.
Introduced Populations:
They were brought to the UK as decorative birds for private collections in the 18th century. Escaped birds formed a thriving, naturalised wild population across Great Britain.
Behavior:
Despite their loud colours, mandarins are shy, timid birds that prefer hiding under overhanging willows and tree cover. They have long claws that allow them to perch on tree branches and fly through dense forests with incredible agility.
Diet
Mandarins are omnivorous foragers. They eat a varied diet consisting of:
Aquatic plants and seeds
Acorns and grains
Insects, land snails, and small fish
Tree Nesting and "Leaping" Chicks
Mandarin ducks have a unique and dramatic nesting ritual:
High Nesting:
Females lay a clutch of 9–12 eggs during the spring in natural tree cavities or holes, sometimes up to 9 metres off the ground.
The Leap of Faith:
Shortly after hatching, the mother flies down to the ground and calls to her ducklings.
Safe Landing:
The tiny, uninjured ducklings leap from the high tree cavity. Their light weight and fluffy down feathers cushion the impact, allowing them to bounce unharmed and follow their mother straight to the nearest water.
Cultural Symbolism
In traditional East Asian cultures—particularly in China and Japan—mandarin ducks are revered as a symbol of lifelong fidelity, love, and wedded bliss. Pairs are frequently depicted in oriental art and given as wedding gifts, even though wild ducks generally only pair up for a single breeding season.

Bent, but never broken.
This reed survived a Lithuanian winter that outweighs it a million to one. Proof that the heaviest weights we carry are usually the ones we create for ourselves and exist only in our heads.
Winter is leaving Lithuania. I suggest we leave the heavy thoughts behind with it.
We all encounter moments of self-doubt
We will hold loneliness by its hand and dance on its toes.
We will stare at the ceiling unnecessarily for hours
before finally falling asleep.
If sleeping at all...
We will clothe ourselves in sadness, and we will feel its weight bearing down upon our shoulders.
We may spend days, weeks, years even, yearning for a breakthrough...
But one day, we will release the loneliness from between our fingertips, and we will slip off the heaviness as gracefully as the trees shed their foliage on a colorful autumn day.
And instead of mourning what we've lost, we will rejoice for all of the space we've created to allow something more beautiful to take its place.
And that isn't to say we won't still feel the harshness of a brisk winter. We were never promised a life without suffering.
But one day, a bud will spring forth to remind us what it feels like to flourish and even the sun herself will envy our light.

Sea lions are pinnipeds characterized by external ear flaps, long foreflippers, the ability to walk on all fours, short and thick hair, and a big chest and belly. Together with the fur seals, they make up the family Otariidae, eared seals. The sea lions have six extant and one extinct species (the Japanese sea lion) in five genera. Their range extends from the subarctic to tropical waters of the global ocean in both the Northern and Southern Hemispheres, with the notable exception of the northern Atlantic Ocean.
Sea lions have an average lifespan of 20–30 years. A male California sea lion weighs on average about 300 kg (660 lb) and is about 2.4 m (8 ft) long, while the female sea lion weighs 100 kg (220 lb) and is 1.8 m (6 ft) long. The largest sea lions are Steller's sea lions, which can weigh 1,000 kg (2,200 lb) and grow to a length of 3.0 m (10 ft). Sea lions consume large quantities of food at a time and are known to eat about 5–8% of their body weight (about 6.8–15.9 kg (15–35 lb)) at a single feeding. Sea lions can move around 16 knots (30 km/h; 18 mph) in water and at their fastest they can reach a speed of about 30 knots (56 km/h; 35 mph). Back in the fifties it seemed that everyone who used a pickup for agriculture or commercial purposes listed their name, town, and the weight of the vehicle minus all fluids and passengers on the door or side panel of the truck. Sign painters must have enjoyed a heyday. Perhaps this was a state department of motor vehicles requirement but in some cases I think it was merely a personal vanity. My dad did it on trucks he owned that were only used for personal transportation. Who could possibly care what the truck weighed with absolutely nothing in it including gas and oil?

The meerkat (Suricata suricatta) or suricate is a small carnivoran in the mongoose family. It is the only member of the genus Suricata. Meerkats live in all parts of the Kalahari Desert in Botswana, in much of the Namib Desert in Namibia and southwestern Angola, and in South Africa. A group of meerkats is called a mob, gang or clan. A meerkat clan often contains about 20 meerkats, but some super-families have 50 or more members. In captivity, meerkats have an average life span of 12–14 years, and about 6–7 years in the wild. Meerkats are primarily insectivores, but also eat other animals (lizards, snakes, scorpions, spiders, eggs, small mammals, millipedes, centipedes and, more rarely, small birds), plants and fungi. Meerkats are immune to certain types of venom, including the very strong venom of the scorpions of the Kalahari Desert. A meerkat has the ability to dig through a quantity of sand equal to its own weight in just seconds. Jaguars are the third largest of the four big cats. It has a sturdy build and usually weights between 125 and 200 pounds. It can reach up to six feet long and stand at about 2 and half feet at the shoulder.
Jaguars will either crush and suffocate and victim or bite straight through his skull. It prefers to stalk and eventually ambush its prey rather than chase it. Then it pounces from a prey’s blind spot. After the kill, jaguars prefer to drag their meal to a secluded spot to eat. They are carnivores but will eat almost any kind of meat.
Jaguars live in South and Central America. Jaguars are larger and stockier than leopards.
Jaguars can kill their prey by cracking their skulls. while leopards kill with a suffocating bite.

A fairly small hummingbird with a slender, nearly straight bill, a tail that tapers to a point when folded, and fairly short wings that don’t reach the end of the tail when the bird is perched.
Rufous Hummingbirds breed in open areas, yards, parks, and forests up to treeline. On migration they pass through mountain meadows as high as 12,600 feet where nectar-rich, tubular flowers are blooming. Winter habitat in Mexico includes shrubby openings and oak-pine forests at middle to high elevation.

Rhinocéros veut dire « corne sur le nez ». Les rhinos sont devenus très rares (moins de 10 000), à cause du braconnage stupide qu’ils subissent à propos de leurs cornes, sensées avoir des effets thérapeutiques et aphrodisiaques.
Il existe deux genres de rhinocéros en Afrique : les blancs (rares) et les noirs (encore plus rares). En réalité les deux sont gris ! Le nom de « blanc » vient d’une erreur de traduction de l’afrikaans « wijde » (large, pour bouche large) vers l’anglais « white » (blanc).
Les rhinocéros blancs ont en théorie deux cornes mais on coupe les cornes des rhinos des réserves pour éviter le braconnage.
On a vu ce rhino de près ! Il s’est même arrêté quelques secondes en nous regardant, et on s’est dit que s’il lui prenait l’envie de charger on aurait bien du mal à s’en sortir !
Contrairement aux apparences, et malgré ses 4 m de long, 1,80 m de haut et son poids de 2,5 tonnes, le rhino est très agile et peut courir très vite (jusqu’à 50 km/h).
Les rhinocéros blancs vivent 45 ans en moyenne et n’ont pas de prédateur à part l’Homme.

Southern white rhinoceros (Ceratotherium simum).
Rhinoceros means "horn on the nose." Rhinos have become very rare (fewer than 10,000) due to the stupid poaching they suffer for their horns, which are supposed to have therapeutic and aphrodisiac effects.
There are two types of rhinoceroses in Africa: white (rare) and black (even rarer). In reality, both are gray! The name "white" comes from a translation error from the Afrikaans "wijde" (wide, for wide mouth) into the English "white."
White rhinos theoretically have two horns, but rhinos in reserves have their horns cut off to prevent poaching.
We saw this rhino up close! He even stopped for a few seconds to look at us, and we thought that if he got the urge to charge, we'd have a hard time getting away!
Contrary to appearances, and despite his 4 m length, 1.8 m height, and 2.5 ton weight, the rhino is very agile and can run very fast (up to 50 km/h).
White rhinos live 45 years on average and have no predators apart from humans.

Peale's dolphin is of typical size in its family — about 1 m (3 ft 3 in) in length at birth and 2.1 m (6 ft 11 in) when fully mature. Its adult weight is about 115 kg (254 lb).
It has a dark-grey face and chin. The back is largely black with a single off-white stripe running, curving, and thickened as it runs down the back on each side.
The belly is white. Conspicuously, also, a white patch occurs just behind each flipper. These are known as the "armpits".
The flanks also have a large white-grey patch above the flipper. The dorsal fin is large for this size cetacean and distinctively falcate.
The flippers themselves are small and pointed. The tail fin, too, has pointed tips, as well as a notch at its middle.
The species looks similar to the dusky dolphin when viewed at a distance, and may be confused with it.

A very personal image that I've debated actually posting but I think I need to. It's an addition to my series based around depression and those who struggle to get through it. There's a weight that depression has, it feels like you're carrying something much too heavy all the time.
November is usually when my depression settles into my mind, like a dimmer switch slowly turning the lights lower. I get anxious when the seasons change, hopeful that I'll be bright enough to push out any negative energy that tries to weigh me down.
