New York (from Weehawken, NJ)

I had the opportunity to take my west coast damsel and several of her co-workers to the Hudson riverfront. The Hudson Riverfront 9/11 Memorial in Weehawken NJ, near the site where about 60,000 people were evacuated by ferry from Manhattan to New Jersey and received medical attention, water, and food on Sept. 11, 2001, after the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center. The two trident-shaped beams served as supports for the towers and were salvaged from the World Trade Center site. For those who visited the former World Trade Center there is an image below of the familiar facade of which such support beams were integrated.

The names of the five Weehawken residents who died in the attacks are listed on the commemorative plaque below in front of the infinity pool and fountain.

Bienvenidos al muelle de Weehawken

Our first attempt to get to Weehawken failed miserably, as we picked the wrong ticket counter and the friendly officer did not accept a German Amateur Fotografers excuses...on the next attempt, we did take our lesson and made it ! Weehawken viewpoint towards Manhatten are quite gorgeous and well worthy the boat trip, even on a cloudy evening. Good remaining week. Thanks, Udo.

Taken earlier tonight from Weehawken.

Conrail ALSE makes its way north on the River Line South toward CP 02 in Weehawken. Little did we know in 1992 that the twin towers of the World Trade Center would not be standing less than 10 years later, forever changing the iconic appearance of lower Manhattan. The view from the Pershing Road overpass is quite different today for other reasons as well. The Hudson-Bergen Light Rail Line now occupies the former River Line right-of-way, with frequent Light Rail Vehicles replacing the occasional Conrail freights that once passed here. The valuable land in the near distance is now occupied by waterfront housing, and lots of it. The quiet two lane road next to the tracks is now the bustling four lane Port Imperial Boulevard. The new One World Trade Center skyscraper towers over all of this from a distance, but it's really not the same. 20 years after 9/11 it's important to remember...never forget!

Yesterday was a great day for taking pics. Here's one I took from the Weehawken waterfront.

Conrail 6613 leads 105-car loaded coal train UCR-80 into the tunnel at Weehawken, NJ. The head end has just passed the signal at CP 02 on trackage that was an extension of the River Line also known as "River Line South". The surrounding area here once contained New York Central's sprawling yard and passenger terminal complex. This trackage is now used by Hudson Bergen Light Rail trains, and of course the surrounding area is now prime real estate.

NYC shines bright on a clear chilly night.

I was on my way home from NYC when I saw how clear the night sky was from the car and decided to make a pit stop in Weehawken to capture this view. Always great to have the gear with you.
